The newspaper business can be<lb />

Some o! the world's greatest minds<lb />

Newspaper men are sometimes<lb />

The list of top-flight figures in the<lb />
newspaper profession is both long<lb />

known the world over for their fight<lb />
for justice and a free democracy.<lb />
There are such notable newsmen as<lb />
Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter<lb />
for the Daily Planet, who in reality<lb />
is Superman; there is crusading<lb />
editor Britt Reid who assumes the<lb />
role of the Green Hornet when crime<lb />

editor of Big Town's top newspaper,<lb />
Wally Cox and Brian Keith, all<lb />
fighting the newspaper cause jon<lb />

Bone-chilling danger threatens<lb />
these men at almost every turn as<lb />
they carry out their calling in the<lb />
field oi journalism. Actually, the life<lb />
oi every newspaperman is filled with<lb />
such adventure. Even reporters from<lb />
the E st Carolinian frequently find<lb />
their lives in danger on thrilling as-<lb />

To cite one inc dent, several weeks<lb />

Fink, garbed in the usual report-<lb />

Thwarted Again<lb />
After several hours o: circling the<lb />
campus, Fink finally found a parking<lb />
place, dumped the car and hurried<lb />
to the building. "Sorry he was told<lb />
by the night watchman, "It's after<lb />

Desperate but determined to ful-<lb />

to the car, stomped it to life and<lb />
wheeled out into the street! Pulling<lb />
into the main drive of the campus, he<lb />
was stalled by a tremendous traffic<lb />
jam. He knew it was either angry<lb />
day students trying to find parking<lb />

the East Carolinian from getting the<lb />

Finally, sever 1 hours later, Fink<lb />
burst into the newspaper office, ex-<lb />

told Ferrell.<lb />
"Didn't you get the story?" Fer-<lb />

It's time for a change in secondary<lb />
education in North Carolina. I don't<lb />
suppose anyone would disagree with<lb />
the above statement in light of i.ie<lb />
faot that North Carolina ranks 47th<lb />
in the United States in education<lb />
that's third from the bottom. And<lb />
out of every 10 students graduated<lb />
from high schools in our state in<lb />
1955, only three went to college.<lb />
This gives rise to the question,<lb />
"What responsibilities have been in-<lb />
vested in the high school?" It simply<lb />
broadens the interests of the indi-<lb />
vidual and thereby enriches the cul-<lb />
tural life of the graduate's communi-<lb />
ty and nation. This, naturally, calls<lb />
for a broad general education.<lb />
'n order for this "general educa-<lb />
tion" to be realized, the high school<lb />
should be geared for the college-<lb />
bound student. This would necessi-<lb />
tate a more rigorous curriculum in<lb />
science, mathematics, and foreign<lb />
language. Such a program of studies<lb />
would partially limit the vocation<lb />
curriculums in many of our schools.<lb />
Vocational studies are by no means<lb />
undesirable. But in some incidents,<lb />
through careless administration, a<lb />
high school student may be graduated<lb />
and be seriously lacking for an aca-<lb />
demic background.<lb />
As well as proficiency in strictly<lb />
academic subjects, characteristics of<lb />
aesthetic value should also be en-<lb />
couraged. Our secondary schools<lb />
should strive to instill in their stu-<lb />
dents an appreciation for our cultural<lb />
and social heritage, oar democratic<lb />
form of government, snd free enter-<lb />
prise. An understanding of vther sys-<lb />
tems of government and other na-<lb />
tional cultures would be of tremen-<lb />
dous benefit in appraising the world<lb />
situation as high school graduated<lb />
men and women.<lb />
These are our needs. They may<lb />
be largely realized by emjploying<lb />
three basic steps:<lb />
First, and without a doubt most<lb />
necessary, would be the acquiring of<lb />
; ble and informed teachers. Therein<lb />
lie the foundation stones. And the<lb />
best teachers may be employed by<lb />
simply offering them more money.<lb />
Dedication is fine and noble, but<lb />
whether we like it or not monentary<lb />
security is to our definite advantage.<lb />
Second, to consolidate the small 50-<lb />
student high schools scattered<lb />
throughout rural North Carolina.<lb />
With a minimum of 300 students, a<lb />
school could have a study program<lb />
worthy of the students' time. This<lb />
would tend to make the plane of<lb />
instruction in both the city schools<lb />
and the rural schools relatively the<lb />
same.<lb />
Thiro the process of "grade giv-<lb />
ing" practiced to a large extent in<lb />
the smaller schools should be stopped.<lb />
For instance, the teacher may be<lb />
subjected to such community pressure<lb />
that if he should give certain stu-<lb />
dents their just grade, he would not<lb />
be asked to return the next year.<lb />
This is a wide-spread activity! And<lb />
to me, it betrays the very integrity<lb />
of the teaching profession. But, in<lb />
order to teach you must have a job,<lb />
and in order to keep a job the teach-<lb />
er has to conform to the community<lb />
criteria. Why must North Carolina's<lb />
teachers be so shackled?<lb />
My point is this: To make the<lb />
high school diploma mean something<lb />
to its holder. As a notification of<lb />
real accomplishments, he may dis-<lb />
play it with pride and perhaps with<lb />
a little boasting.<lb />

wife especially enjoyed the past is-<lb />
sue. After my wife and I read the<lb />
"East Carolinian" we turned it over<lb />
to our seven month old daughter,<lb />
Linda. To prove it contained an enor-<lb />
mous amount of digestible material,<lb />
she began to chew on it.<lb />
Keep up the good work!<lb />
Sincerely,<lb />

Hidden talents . . .<lb />
With the beginning of a new quarter<lb />
it's always a good idea to sit down and take<lb />
stock of the situation, to see how much we've<lb />
done and just where we're going. Maybe<lb />
many people are not aware that ECC is<lb />
equipped to offer radio and television train-<lb />
ing in all ite aspects however, Miss Rauls-<lb />
ton. programming director, is very willing<lb />
to talk to any interested beginners. Now is<lb />
a good time to begin if a student is in-<lb />
terested in a future career in these fields.<lb />
Responsibility <lb />
Some people should not only learn how<lb />
to spell this word, but also the meaning <lb />
it. Each parent would appreciate it if his<lb />
son or daughter would realize the value '<lb />
the money received for a college education<lb />
and attempt to get their money's worth<lb />
while here. You are not only responsible<lb />
to yourself for acquiring an education, but<lb />
to your parents, and in a broader sense, to<lb />
your state and the nation.<lb />
A Riuy For . . .<lb />
'1 he Entertainment Series is paid for<lb />
by each person's student activity fee paid<lb />
each quarter. Some very entertaining pro-<lb />
grams have been presented in the past and<lb />
there have even been some "standing room<lb />
only" performances as in the case of the<lb />
Marine Band and the Navy Band. This un-<lb />
itunately, is not the rule. While we salute<lb />
the valiant effort of the music appreciation<lb />
t. achers who require the attendance of these<lb />
events, we regret that this does not reach<lb />
the majority of the campus. Tonight East<lb />
Carolina is privileged to have a famous<lb />
pianist to play here. It's well worth your<lb />
timeso why not come out for it?<lb />
Nothing is so intriguing as the future<lb />
possibilities involved in closed-circut tele<lb />
vision which will soon be experimented <lb />
this college. One of the nicer points which<lb />
certain students will be quick to note is 1<lb />
fact that the television sets in the dorms<lb />
will be able to monitor these TV classes<lb />
Consequently, can't you just see the gir'J<lb />
in Garrett going to school in their pajamas<lb />
ttheir TV is located in the basement.)<lb />
With apologies to the dining hall's Mr<lb />
Julian, the soot source has been located<lb />
as rather coming from the laundry. Irr-<lb />
gardless, soot is still soot and the genii<lb />
wind is still wafting its black particles across<lb />
the campus. <lb />
Speaking of Mr. Julian, someone a<lb />
sav a nice word for him, so it shall be here-<lb />
with ouoted for posterity"I-believe OJ<lb />
Mr. Julian is doing a very admirable J;<lb />

A Bumper Crop Of Queens<lb />
Another One Added To Long List During<lb />
Holiday Festivities In Greensboro<lb />
By KATHRYN JOHNSON<lb />
East Carolina lias added another<lb />
firl to its Dumper crap of beauty<lb />
queens.<lb />
At the second annual C ristmas<lb />
Holiday Jubilee November 23, Diana<lb />
Johnson reigned as queen. This 5'<lb />
4" burnette from Asheboro was<lb />
chosen from forty girls representing<lb />
towns in the Piedmont sections of<lb />
North Carolina and Virginia.<lb />
"I just couldn't believe I had won<lb />
because I had no idea I would be<lb />
picked declared Diana. "I was so<lb />
excited that iat year's queen had a<lb />
hard time making the crown stay on<lb />
my head T. e judges, who graded on<lb />
personality, poise, and looks, awarded<lb />
ti.e pretty lass with the laughing<lb />
eyes a $400 scholarship to this col-<lb />
lege.<lb />
Being a beauty queen is nothing<lb />
new to Diana. As Miss Randolph<lb />
County she artkipated in the Miss<lb />
North Carolina beauty pageant this<lb />
summer and was one of the ten fi-<lb />
nalists. Recently she was chosen group<lb />
sponsor for the AFROTC and will be<lb />
Queen of the Military Ball.<lb />
Diana, who is an English major,<lb />
is not only beautiful but s"he is also<lb />
smart. Her sophomore class elected<lb />
her ciass secretary this year. She<lb />
also finds time to work on the year-<lb />
book staff and in the Future Teach-<lb />
ers of America club.<lb />
Another campus beauty is a blonde<lb />
with long tresses, Linda "V hie hard.<lb />
Linda was Miss Greenville. She not<lb />
only won fourth place in the Miss<lb />
North Carolina contest, but also a<lb />
third place in the Miss Photo Flash<lb />
contest at Myrtle Beach. S. C. Linda<lb />
has represented Greenville at various<lb />
social functions including the annual<lb />
Christmas parade.<lb />
Sue Heath, -another blonde beauty<lb />
on campus, wsus Miss Kinston. In<lb />
the Miss North Carolina contest Sue<lb />
diiplayed a great deal of dramatic<lb />
talent when she portrayed Saint Joan<lb />
in a portion of George Bernard Shaw's<lb />
play. On campus Sue is active in<lb />
the Wesley Players of the Methodist<lb />
Student Center. She "had a part ir<lb />
