Newspaper Story Implies Students<lb />
Caused Disturbance At Domino<lb />
Dance; Termed False, Exaggerated<lb />
By JIMMY FERRELL<lb />
A news story implying that East I said Monday that he had no reports<lb />
Carolina students played an import-1 from WiUiamston concerning mis-<lb />
anl role in causing a disturbance behavior on the part of East Carolina<lb />
during the Fats Domino dance in students.<lb />
The Uinstead residents above are shown after they gathered in a neighbor's room Tuesday night to watch<lb />
the election returns being tabulated. They didn't have to sit up too late before it was evident that Ike would<lb />
stay in the White House. Kast Carolina students favored Stevenson over Eisenhower by a two to one majority<lb />
in the recent mock election here. (Ferrell photo)<lb />
Instructors Discuss Experimentation<lb />
Extension Of Honor System Planned<lb />
Bv JAN RABY<lb />
Possibilities that the honor system<lb />
will be expanded on the campus and<lb />
extended to the junior class is the<lb />
report received from Dean Leo W.<lb />
Jenkins. However, the Advisory-<lb />
Council will not report on the pro-<lb />
gress being made by the system<lb />
until the end of the quarter when<lb />
the senior class now experimenting<lb />
with it will be surveyed.<lb />
Ten departments now have classes<lb />
experimenting with the honor system.<lb />
Six of the teachers who are parti-<lb />
es ating were interviewed by an<lb />
Bast Carolinian staff member this<lb />
week and asked for an opinion as to<lb />
the das reaction, how the testing<lb />
without supervision was working<lb />
out, and similar questions.<lb />
Dr. Bessie McNiel of the Home<lb />
Economics department said, "I se-<lb />
lected a class in which I was sure<lb />
it would work. I think it is progress-<lb />
ing satisfactorily, but I don't think<lb />
it would work in all senior classes.<lb />
I am convinced that it will never<lb />
work until all the students are will-<lb />
ing to take the responsibility for<lb />
punishing the offenders. Since 1 live<lb />
in the Home Management House I<lb />
was able to talk to the girls who are<lb />
in my class beforehand about using<lb />
the Honor System. The President<lb />
tern.<lb />
Dr. C. G. Risher of the Industrial<lb />
Arts department had no comment to<lb />
make at this time.<lb />
Mr. W. W. Howell, Business depart-<lb />
ment, has given one unmonitored<lb />
test in his senior class. He had no<lb />
ersonal opinion to offer, but said<lb />
that he had heard student comment<lb />
pro and con.<lb />
Basically Honest<lb />
In the Psychology department Dr.<lb />
Stritch stated that he had had exper-<lb />
ience with an honor system before<lb />
and that it did work. He does not Snitch. Students should be asked<lb />
believe that this is the way to go whether or not they want the honor<lb />
about it, but when asked if ECC was (system because it won't work if<lb />
ready for an honor system, he said, j they don't want it, was his opinion.<lb />
"Yes, people ar basically honest.<lb />
The stu lent8 at ECC are no different<lb />
than students any where else He<lb />
thought t at the critics were selling<lb />
the students short when they say<lb />
that it will not work here.<lb />
Stritch believes that an honor sys-<lb />
tem ia possible by starting with the<lb />
fit shman by letting the upperclass-<lb />
men indoctrinate them to the fact<lb />
I.at heat v wrong and dis-<lb />
honor .hie.<lb />

Any student who has applied<lb />
for vtudent teaching winter quar-<lb />
ter or spring quarter who now<lb />
i college post office number<lb />
other than the one listed on his<lb />
application blank should advise<lb />
the Placement Office about their<lb />
new number. Because some stu-<lb />
dents have not given us their<lb />
new numbers, they have failed<lb />
to get important communications.<lb />
have talked with me and were very<lb />
interested in having an Honor System<lb />
and they have discussed it with the<lb />
other girls. I do not believe that a<lb />
campus-wide honor system could be<lb />
set up next quarter or any time<lb />
soon<lb />
Progressing<lb />
In the Health and Physical educa-<lb />
tion department Dr. C. G. DeSaw<lb />
said, "I believe that the honor sys-<lb />
tem is progressing very well in my<lb />
class. I haven't heard any adverse<lb />
comment among the students<lb />
Miss Mary Greene, English depart-<lb />
ment, said that the students in her<lb />
class had voted in favor of the sys-<lb />
This semeed to be the attitude of<lb />
those who had any part in "State of<lb />
the Union presented October 30, 31,<lb />
November 1, and 2. Lloyd Bray, Jr<lb />
technical director, explained thajt<lb />
the scenery for the play presented<lb />
various problems. It was necessary<lb />
to have three complete sets which<lb />
were taken from entirely different<lb />
periods; a total of twenty-one sections<lb />
of scenery (flats), and thirty articles<lb />
of furniture. All the scenery had to<lb />
be re-constructed and re-canvassed,<lb />
and it was necessary to construct<lb />
much new scenery. This required<lb />
five hundred feet of lumber, seventy<lb />
Lynn Entertained After Final Performance<lb />
and twenty gallons of paint either<lb />
brushed or s; rayed on the flats. The<lb />
flats had to be constructed so they<lb />
might easily i e disassembled in eight<lb />
minutes. No mishap occured until the<lb />
la.t performance; a set was com-<lb />
pletely assembled . n( the cast ready<lb />
to perform when someone noticed a<lb />
12' by H' flat missing. After much<lb />
searching it was unearthed beneath<lb />
scenery from other sets.<lb />
The.se are only a few representative<lb />
problems of reducing a play, and<lb />
vou re lly need to help with one to<lb />
appreciate the time and effort it<lb />
requires.<lb />
WiUiamston Friday night has been<lb />
ermed exaggerated and false by<lb />
vVilliamston's Police Chief John Roe-<lb />
buck and Student Government Asso-<lb />
ciation President Dock G. Smith.<lb />
The News and Observer of Raleigh<lb />
carried a story in last Sunday's edi-<lb />
tion, pointing out that a disturbance<lb />
in WiUiamston "waa aggravated when<lb />
an estimated 200 college students<lb />
yelling Ea.st Carolina College cheers<lb />
crashed t" e door, and police were<lb />
called when the students all but took<lb />
over a cafe a short distance from the<lb />
warehouse<lb />
Police Chief Roebuck told the East<lb />
Carolinian by phone earlier this week<lb />
he hadn't heard of any such inci-<lb />
dent until he read The News and<lb />
Observer story, didn't know how the<lb />
information reached the paper or<lb />
where it came from.<lb />
He said two members of his force,<lb />
who were stationed at the big ware-<lb />
house where the rock n' roll band<lb />
was playing, reported only a fight<lb />
between two colored men.<lb />
Roebuck continued that no member<lb />
of his force made any mention of<lb />
East Carolina students crashing a<lb />
door and explained, "No more than<lb />
I've heard about it, I'd say it was<lb />
exaggerated<lb />
Absolutely FalseSmith<lb />
Student Government President<lb />
Dock G. Smith gave this account:<lb />
"I was present nd I do know that<lb />
there was no crashing of the door<lb />
by any mass group of students from<lb />
East Carolina.<lb />
"There were not even near 200<lb />
students from East Carolina at the<lb />
daiice, jinich less yAling college<lb />
cheers. There were about six or seven<lb />
students yelling cheers, but the com-<lb />
. letely exaggerated story of an es-<lb />
timated 200 college students doing<lb />
so and crashing the door is abso-<lb />
lutely false.<lb />
"As for the cafe incident, the<lb />
crowd in the cafe was made up of<lb />
many people that attended the dance.<lb />
There was a great deal of noise made,<lb />
'ut nothing that would merit such a<lb />
statement as 'all but took over the<lb />
cafe "<lb />
Others Contacted<lb />
Other students, who attended the<lb />
dance, contacted by the East Caro-<lb />
linian gawe practically the same<lb />
tory. Several said there were no<lb />
more than 50 students attending the<lb />
big dance and one said there were<lb />
"only 25 at the most<lb />
Just as President Smith said,<lb />
others estimated that there were five<lb />
or six boys leading in EOC cheers<lb />
during the dance, but one student<lb />
said he "heard it only once<lb />
Commenting on the cafe incident,<lb />
another stated that he went to the<lb />
cafe and saw "some students acting<lb />

A near-riot was reported in Fay-<lb />

Domino blamed it on "the mix of<lb />

TetMching With Television<lb />
The acquisition of new-type iden-<lb />
tification cards for students and ex-<lb />
perimentation with closed circuit<lb />
television classes here were the main<lb />
topics of discussion at last week's<lb />
meeting of the Dean's Advisory Coun-<lb />
cil.<lb />
The group decided, too, that there<lb />
was no apparent need for a dating<lb />
bureau, made plans for dorm lectures<lb />
on marriage and the family, and<lb />
went on record as disapproving the<lb />
establishment of national social fra-<lb />
ternities here.<lb />
Men's Judiciary Chairman Eddie<lb />
Dennis proposed the adoption of an<lb />
identification card which would in-<lb />
clude a picture of the student, pro-<lb />
hibiting its being transferable among<lb />
others.<lb />
Dennis pointed out that the change<lb />
would bring about an increase in cost,<lb />
but said that in the long run money<lb />
would be saved by admission prices.<lb />
Dr. Jenkins explained to the group<lb />
that100,000 has been allocated in<lb />
order that East Carolina could ex-<lb />
periment with closed circuit tele-<lb />
vision in classrooms next year.<lb />
"There is a great future in it and<lb />
we are going to be the guinea pigs<lb />

ther that one teacher will conduct<lb />
a class on a specific phase of the<lb />
course while still others will teach<lb />
in other areas.<lb />
The lecture will be televised from<lb />

Another Flowerpot<lb />
Walter Winchell defines the newspaper-<lb />
man as "the fellow who sits at a window and<lb />
watches millions of people walk by in the<lb />
street below In the moving mass "he sees<lb />
friends, enemies, good men and bad. It is his<lb />
privilege, as a journalist, to drop a flower or<lb />
a flowerpot on each<lb />
The News and Observer dropped another<lb />
flowerpot en East Carolina College last Sun-<lb />
day. It isn't the first time the huge Daniels<lb />
machine from Raleigh ha hit East Carolina<lb />
e blow on the head. This is only the latest of<lb />
many flowerpots "The Old Reliable" has re-<lb />
leased on this thriving institution during the<lb />
past few years.<lb />
The ludicrous piece which appeared in<lb />
the Sunday News and Observer falsely implies<lb />
that ECC students composed "an estimated<lb />
200 collect- students" who created a disturb-<lb />
ance at the Fats Domino dance in Williamston<lb />
Friday night, crashed a warehouse door, and<lb />
"all but took over a cafe a short distance from<lb />
the warehouse<lb />
Mr. Wincheil, who is one of the most<lb />
widely read journalists in the world today,<lb />
considers news to be "something you haven't<lb />
heard before<lb />
Undoubtedly that is why the respected<lb />
Raleigh paper carried the story in Sunday's<lb />
edition. WilHamston's Police Chief John Roe-<lb />
buck told the East Carolinian he hadn't heard<lb />
of anv such incident until he read it in "The<lb />
Old Reliable Officers, who were stationed<lb />
at the big rock and roll affair, didn't report<lb />
any such incident. If 200 students crash the<lb />
door of any budding ad practically take over<lb />
a cafe, you can bet your bottom dollar the<lb />
police force in that immediate locale is going<lb />
to hear about it and do something about it.<lb />
SGA President Dock Smith and several<lb />
other prominent students, who were present<lb />
at the dance, assured us that East Carolina<lb />
students were not involved in such an incident<lb />
and called the News and Observer story a<lb />
complete exaggeration.<lb />
The press is free, but only to the extent<lb />
that reporters can prove everything they write<lb />
with true facts. From where we sit, it looks<lb />
as if some News and Observer correspondent<lb />
had himself quite a ball playing reporter, and<lb />
"The Old Reliable" must have been more than<lb />
happy to print it on page four without in-<lb />
vestigating the true facts.<lb />
East Carolina's head is growing sore, but<lb />
it continues to thrive in spite of the Daniels<lb />
machine and its flowerpots. It's time for "The<lb />
Ofd Reliable" to restrict all of its flowerpot<lb />
throwing to Thomas Pearsall and Percy<lb />
Flowers. <lb />
Suez Crisis<lb />
What is wrong in the Middle East? At the<lb />

Israel and the Anglo-French forces have<lb />
been labeled as the aggressors by the United<lb />
Nation- Many believe, however, that both df<lb />
these forces are justified in their actions.<lb />
Since their establishment as a free state<lb />
in 1947. the people of Israel have been contin-<lb />
ually bombarded by stronger Middle Eastern<lb />
powers. Since 1954, Israel has been faced with<lb />
the threat and actual confiscation of her ships<lb />
in the Suez Canala problem that has faced<lb />
the free world for only a fewr months.<lb />
The threat of continued confiscation, the<lb />
fear that America's refusal to grant defensive<lb />
arms would be extended by the re-election of<lb />
Eisenhower, and the reinstallment of Dulles<lb />
as American Secretary of State, and the help<lb />
of Anglo-French forces, who were also being<lb />
discriminated in the Canal, led these people<lb />
to war against Egypt.<lb />
The Anglo-French forces have also been<lb />
labeled as an aggressor, but they have justi-<lb />
fied their actions on the discrimination in the<lb />
Suez and by the seizure of the canal by Nasser.<lb />
In short, these countries, who have invested<lb />
money and equipment in the Suez area and<lb />
depend upon Middle Eastern oil, became tired<lb />
of Nasser's love affairs with the Soviets.<lb />
Whether we will complete the work that<lb />
we began in 1947 of establishing a free Is-<lb />
raeli state and back up our long-time allies<lb />
remains to be seen.<lb />
As a newspaper published by young stu-<lb />
dents, the East Carolinian thinks that at<lb />
least our mutual interest with the Anglo-<lb />
French forces should be considered, and make<lb />
sure that our bonds under the NATO alliance<lb />
are not flushed away in the United Nations<lb />
by Russia's veto power. <lb />

Trying To Demolish<lb />
Russian Monuments<lb />
YOUNG HUNGARIANS were try-<lb />

th monuments erected by Russian<lb />
leaders when they took over Hun-<lb />
gary during World War II.<lb />
There was one symbolizing victory.<lb />
A statue of Joe Stalin was standing<lb />
proudly a little further down the<lb />
street. A giant replica of a new-<lb />
type Russian plane rested atop<lb />
another.<lb />
T ey tied ropes around Stalin and<lb />
finally dislodged him from his perch.<lb />
The plane was brought down, too,<lb />
and one young revolter gave it a<lb />
good working over with an axe. He<lb />
seemed to be getting the satisfaction<lb />
of destroying the whole Red Air<lb />
Force. Those that couldn't be brought<lb />
down were left to the mercy of<lb />
machine gun fire.<lb />
THE TV NEWSREEL pictured<lb />

Shaggy Holdouts Face Quick Expulsion<lb />
Last week, a brief news .story was<lb />
released by the Associated Press,<lb />
which told of a high school principal<lb />
in iRomeo, Michigan, who threat-<lb />
ened 52 male students with expulsion<lb />
because of their Elvk Presley hair-<lb />
cuts, levis and genera! unkempt ap-<lb />
ptarances.<lb />
Little or nothing has been heard<lb />
in a way of criticism from the news-<lb />
papers (or any other medium) about<lb />
the principal's action. This, to me,<lb />
is a bad indication in a land that<lb />
k .supposed to be bubbling over with<lb />
freedom and democracy. It is a sign<lb />
that either the American people are<lb />
becoming too 1 zy and self-satisfied<lb />
or else that they are simply afraid<lb />
to pak out against injustice. Or<lb />
perhaps they juist don't care.<lb />
Let's analyze the facts in that<lb />
brief little story and see just what<lb />
it implies. The AP story went in<lb />
part. as follows: "Fifty-two male<lb />
Students who lately sported the long<lb />
sideburns and ducktail haircut af-<lb />
fected by the rock 'n' roll singer<lb />
agreed to a pear in class today with<lb />
trimmed hair and clean shaven faces.<lb />
, "They hai no choice. Any shaggy<lb />
holdouts face quick expulsion<lb />
The Romeo school was no private<lb />
institution. It was pointed out in<lb />
the story that it was a public com-<lb />
munity high school. Then, are we<lb />
to assume that public citizens are<lb />
no longer allowed to use their own<lb />
descretion in choosing clothes, styles<lb />
of dress and appearance? Is this to<lb />
say that, in Modern America, peo-<lb />
le are subject to be ordered how to<lb />
cut their hair, how high to wear<lb />
t' eir pants, how o'ter, they shoukl<lb />
shave, how they should brush their<lb />
teeth, walk, talk and breathe? It<lb />
would seem .so.<lb />
Yet, no one has spoken out against<lb />
the methods of the dictator-like school<lb />
superintendent J. c. Filppuia. who<lb />
even had the gal! to say that the<lb />
students should be ashamtfd of them-<lb />
selves as males, for wearing what he<lb />
ttrmed "long hair No on has made<lb />
a move to correct this man who<lb />
threatened students wit expulsion<lb />
because several teachers felt that<lb />
the haircuts fostered a "defiant at-<lb />
titude<lb />
If the American people .sanction<lb />
the selfish, narrow-minded actions of<lb />
such men as Pi pula, allow uncon-<lb />
tional methods to be used on<lb />
high school tevels, how long will it<lb />
be before the infection spreads to<lb />
higher places?<lb />
Speaking Of<lb />
American Heritage And The College Man<lb />
By PURVIS BOYETTE<lb />
Happy's is a small restaurant-pool<lb />
room located jut off Fifth Street.<lb />
It's a good restaurant . . . grade "A"<lb />
sanitary rating, shellacked pine tables,<lb />
and plenty of catsup. The pool tables<lb />
aren't as fine and up-to-date as you'd<lb />
like for them to be but of course,<lb />
you must remember that it's only<lb />
ten cents a game. And Happy's fried<lb />
chickenit just doesn't come any<lb />
better. There's beer too for those<lb />
who like their meals German style<lb />
although I'm dubious about who<lb />
started beer and meal together first,<lb />
the Germans or Americans. J've<lb />
heard about country style mashed<lb />
(not creamed) potatoes. Without a<lb />
doubt, these must be the kind Happy<lb />
serves. Slaw? He really does dish<lb />
out real chicken slaw. Now there is<lb />
a difference (a big difference) be-<lb />
tween chicken slaw, fish slaw, oyster<lb />
slaw (especially oyster slaw) and<lb />
barbecue slaw. Happy knows that<lb />
difference.<lb />
Women don't usually go to Happy's<lb />
although some do. I'm not quite sure<lb />
why . . .<lb />
And Happy, the last remained tran-<lb />
sitory element between the bar room<lb />
tender of yesteryear and the con-<lb />
noisseur of today, is a little man,<lb />
slightly built and he is just six feet,<lb />
a manish voice, and he knows his<lb />
stuffpeople. Happy hag it fixed so<lb />
that when you open the door and<lb />
take one step in you're automatically<lb />
standing ki front of the serving bar<lb />
or counter if you prefer. Right off<lb />
the bat he'll say, "Whatll you have?"<lb />
Who started it first, the Pabst people<lb />
or Happy, no one will ever know but<lb />
everybody has just about the same<lb />
idea. But sometimes he'll fool you<lb />
and say, "Whatll it be for you?" He<lb />
doesn't feel well on these days. Ordi-<lb />
narily this is all Happy ever says<lb />
as he bounces from one pot to the<lb />
other. But upon iure occasion, when<lb />
he feels exceptionally well, because<lb />
of" his blue ribbons or what-have-<lb />
you, he'll say, after you've given him<lb />
your order, "You're a damn good<lb />
boy<lb />
A young man entered the foyer. He<lb />
stopped and began chatting with the<lb />
popcorn hostess. Their conversation<lb />
appeared nonsensical. Across the<lb />
foyer, leaning against one of the<lb />
supporting columns, stood another<lb />
young man, alone and very different.<lb />
The most obvious difference was<lb />
the way in which each was dressed.<lb />
The young man talking with the<lb />
girl was recieely attired according<lb />
to the latest fashions . . . Ivy League<lb />
from head to toe in his heavy tweed<lb />
coat, silk striped tie, and English<lb />
tb shirt. The other was dressed in<lb />
complete disregard for fashion. His<lb />
pants were rumpled and instead of<lb />
a coat and tie he wore only a short<lb />
sleaved shirt which looked unironed.<lb />
Hio general appearance was that of<lb />
unkemptness. The first man, by his<lb />
very carriage, indicated a full know-<lb />
ledge of the social graces. The second<lb />
man exhibited no such knowledge,<lb />
only an obtusenes which astounds<lb />
in this day of opportunity. Ending<lb />
his chit-chat, the well-dressed young<lb />
man walked over to another group<lb />
and together they went into the<lb />
movie. He was a college man.<lb />
From the first moment th young<lb />
man so lacking in savior flaire saw<lb />
the college student, he never took<lb />
his eyes from him. And those eyes<lb />
expressed such dejection, such com-<lb />
plete disrespect for his own abilities,<lb />
such utter hatred of the social world<lb />
to which he did not belong and such<lb />
exhausting admiration for those who<lb />
had the opportunities that he would<lb />
never have that one knew he would<lb />
sonn cry. A friend joined him shortly<lb />
and they left unsmilingly.<lb />
That scene reminded me in pro-<lb />
foundest term of how very much<lb />
evt ry in.ant born will become the<lb />
roduct of his environment and eco-<lb />
nomic r,?nk which will dictate to a<lb />
large extent the measure of opportu-<lb />
nities he will enjoy. Some overcome<lb />
their parentage; most do not. A<lb />
college students, we should be ever<lb />
grateful and loyal to our parents who<lb />
gave us such a wealth of opportuni-<lb />
ties and advantages. To those who<lb />
owe no such devotion, beN especially<lb />
proud of your self-accomplishments.<lb />
As a member of this select college<lb />
community, we are a group out-<lb />
standing. The American Heritage is<lb />
oursbe proud, sincere and ever<lb />
humble.<lb />

Controversial Currents<lb />

It seems to me that the jbo<lb />

tudents, but that 721 students ja<lb />

Yes, this is only about one :<lb />
the students, but look at it this n<lb />
hundred students are enough to fi<lb />

Surely, there is enough intern<lb />

less someone does something aboul<lb />
lack of interest (I suppose you could<lb />
it that) democracy is going to meet a<lb />
defeat on this campus!<lb />
Maybe it's not as serious as<lb />
us believe, but in the last three car:<lb />

thirty percentage points below the oat<lb />
average. Surely the Elections Com:<lb />

This columnist would like to a <lb />
that in future campus-wide elections <lb />
voting be conducted in both the cafel<lb />

Pot Pourri<lb />
To Go Or Not To Go<lb />
By JAS RABY<lb />
It's All in How you Look At It . . .<lb />
This columnist started to write an<lb />
editorial on the "suitcase college" probh<lb />
at ECC, but after having talked with several<lb />
ptople, who have -been to other colleges,<lb />
on the subject, we pause to reconsider. Most<lb />
of the critics on this issue do not stop tc<lb />
consider some of the unique factors involved.<lb />
A point to be reckoned with is that<lb />
majority of students live near the colleg-<lb />
It is easy, also, to find a ride to your he:<lb />
tovsn with the large number of cars on eai<lb />
pus. The lack of Saturday classes tak-<lb />
away a factor that might prohibit so many<lb />
people from going home. Several of I<lb />
students admit that going home every wt<lb />
end has become a habit and their parents<lb />
are accustomed to having them come<lb />
Mother can do the washing and Jr. can<lb />
some free meals.<lb />
Whether we admit it or not, we ca<lb />
to the "suitcase college" theme when every<lb />
activity is geared to the idea that nothing<lb />
muse be scheduled on the week-end (with<lb />
the exception of a few). One of the largi<lb />
student membership organizations is the<lb />
BSU, which meets on Monday nights; like-<lb />
wise the Methodist and the Presbyterian<lb />
groups. Also from the SGA on down to the<lb />
English club, every extracurricular activity<lb />
is slated for a school night, taking away time<lb />
that should be spent preparing for the n<lb />
day's classwork.<lb />
In view of the above, it is ad mi<lb />
that there are some bad points, but the<lb />
decision must be made as which outweighs<lb />
the other, and should there be something<lb />
done about it?<lb />
A few complaints <lb />
It seems that soot from the chimne:<lb />
the area of the cafeteria is drifting down<lb />
like snow and the cleaning bill of those stu-<lb />
dents who walk by that area has been going<lb />
up. The girls would much rather continue<lb />
wearing those pullover sweaters, but they<lb />
just can't see having that dirty soot fly on<lb />
them. Mr. Julian, or whoever is concerned,<lb />
how about checking your soot filter on the<lb />
chimney.<lb />
And a request 7<lb />
Speaking of Mr. Julian, many of the<lb />
students are asking if it wouldn't be possible<lb />
to continue having iced tea through the<lb />
rest of the winter. Seems they really like it<lb />
How about it?<lb />

In a matter of a few abort weeks,<lb />
East Carolina's aquatic swimmers<lb />
will begin their third season against<lb />
an outstanding caliber of opponents<lb />
under the leadership of Coach Ray<lb />
Martinez.<lb />
During their initial season three<lb />
years ago, the Pirate swimmers met<lb />
a rigid schedule which brought only<lb />
a lone victory for all their efforts.<lb />
The following season, last year, was<lb />
i different story, one of "Cinderella"<lb />
quality. Loaded with veterans and<lb />
outstanding newcomers, the mermen<lb />
turned in a "surprising record of nine<lb />
wins and four losses.<lb />
Many larger schools were startled<lb />
by this sharp turn of events for Mar-<lb />
tinez's teamno longer would East<lb />
Carolina be considered a soft touch.<lb />
This realization has already had its<lb />
fleet. Clemon and the Citadel, two<lb />
powers whom the Pirates handed<lb />
le eat, 1: t year, have decided a-<lb />
gainst meeting the .supposed soft<lb />
-ouch in 1956-57.<lb />
This season, the Pirate mermen<lb />
will meet such teams as the Uni-<lb />
versity of North Carolina, N. C. State,<lb />
V. M. I D-vidson, William & Mary,<lb />
Washington & Lee, Wake Forest, and<lb />
the Duke junior varsity. Many of<lb />
the.se meets will be held in Memorial<lb />
Pool, here at the college, for the<lb />
benefit of Pirate supporters. Coach<lb />
Martinez stated that V. P. I. and<lb />
Georgia Tech have also been contacted<lb />
for meets, but nothing definite has<lb />
been reached.<lb />
When the University of North Car-<lb />
olina journeys here on December 1.<lb />
n display will be the performers<lb />
who have made tfhe Tar Heels co-<lb />
champdons of the Atlantic Coast<lb />
Conference and the tentih ranked<lb />
college power in the nation. This<lb />
opening meet will serve notice to<lb />
other Pirate opponents of what lies<lb />
ahead of them.<lb />
Another old rival will be N. C.<lb />
State. The Raleigh mermen possess<lb />
the fifth ranked team in the nation<lb />
and, along with Carolina, share the<lb />
ACC championship. Leading the<lb />
Wolf pack, when they invade Eatft<lb />
Carolina, is All-Ameiican Dick Fad-<lb />
gen. This talented junior captured the<lb />
200-yd. Butterfly and the 200-yd.<lb />
Breaststroke events at the National<lb />
Collegiate Championships.<lb />
V. M. L's Keydets will play host<lb />
to a band of visiting Pirates on<lb />
January 11. For the past three years,<lb />
the Keydets have dominated the<lb />
Southern Conference with a firm<lb />
hand. The Pirates will he trying to<lb />
avenge last years defeat suffered<lb />
at home before a capacity throng.<lb />
The men of Coach Martinez have<lb />
a large undertaking ahead of them,<lb />
ont- which will require the same<lb />
winning determination they displayed<lb />
last year. That determination and<lb />
fine support accomplished wonders<lb />
as the record shows. Though lacking<lb />
last year'h depth, the Pir.tes will<lb />
undoubtedly bring forth a team to<lb />
be reckoned with. Under the Martinez<lb />
system, a team effort which work<lb />
well brings ultimate victory. The<lb />
veterans will have to hold their own<lb />
and gain sup;ort from a promising<lb />
rop of newcomers during the ap-<lb />
proaching schedule.<lb />

Seeing Double? Look Again,<lb />
ECC Boasts Six Sets Of Twins<lb />
Speaks At YDC Meeting<lb />
By Kathryn Johnson<lb />
"What's that? Am I seeing dou-<lb />
ble?" The student quickly looks a-<lb />
gam. No, hLs eyes are not playing<lb />
tricks on him. He has only passed<lb />
one of Est Carolina's six sets of<lb />
twins.<lb />
Jean and Jane Duke, idtenfcijeal<lb />
twins from Washington, reveal that<lb />
being a twin certainly has its good<lb />
points. They not only switch dates<lb />
often, but sometimes get crushes<lb />
on the same boy. Once, when Jean<lb />
was younger she waved at a mirror<lb />
thinking it was Jane. When the i-<lb />
mage waved back Jean ran toward it,<lb />
but received no greeting except a<lb />
knot on the head as she bumped<lb />
into the mirror.<lb />
The only obvious difference in the<lb />
girls is the streak of gray hair Jean<lb />
has. The girls share the same inter-<lb />
ests and their grades are generally<lb />
the same. They were presented to-<lb />
gether at this year's Debutante<lb />
Ball. In the future they hope o have<lb />
a double wedding. Since twins runs<lb />
in their family every generation, one<lb />
of them is likely to receive a double<lb />
bundle of joy one day.<lb />
Minshew Twins<lb />
Another set of identical twins are<lb />
Arimenta and Juanita Minshew from<lb />
Eureka. Although they are indenti-<lb />
cal their dates usually do not have<lb />
trouble telling thjcAn apart. Mst<lb />
people just get their names mixed-up.<lb />
They have always dressed alike and<lb />
their grades seem to be the same in<lb />
school. The girls have never been<lb />
separated and all of their classes are<lb />
together. They seldom get crushes<lb />
on the same boys although their<lb />
other interests are usually the same.<lb />
"We've always strived to be in-<lb />
dividuals instead of one of a pair<lb />
etteville. They even wear their hair<lb />
differently and dress differently so<lb />
that each can be herself. They are the<lb />
only set of twins on campus who<lb />
do not room together. Unlike most<lb />
identical twins the girls do not make<lb />
similiar grades. Jacqueline is in-<lb />
terested in dramatics and her looka-<lb />
like Geraldine is active in the Baptist<lb />
Student Union.<lb />
Cooke Twins<lb />
On the other hand Molly and Mar-<lb />
cella Cooke, identical twins from<lb />
Auiander, like being part of a pair.<lb />
They dress alike and can be told<lb />
a; art only by the mole on Marcella's<lb />
neck. Their interest are the same in<lb />
everyt ing, their grades are the same,<lb />
nd they usually double-date. Often<lb />
the boys wonder which girl they are<lb />
upposed to be dating.<lb />
Janice and Joyce Pierce are twins<lb />
rom Rocky Mount who are not<lb />
identical. They share very few simi-<lb />
larities or interests. Joyce declared,<lb />
"We're just like ordinary sisters<lb />
except we were born at the same<lb />
time Twins run in the Pierce fami-<lb />
ly. Although they are not identical<lb />
they find that teachers and friends<lb />
get them mixed-up.<lb />
McRay Twins<lb />
Mary and Sarah McRay from<lb />
Rowland are the first twins<lb />
to appear in their family. They<lb />
are maternal twins, but they<lb />
are much closer than mere<lb />
sisters. They have few differences<lb />
and their grades are usually the<lb />
same. For the last few summers they<lb />
have been separated, but both agree<lb />
they are lost without each other.<lb />
While Mary has an outstanding re-<lb />
cord on the basketball court, Sarah<lb />
excells in music. The poor referees<lb />

Dr. Pitts' appearances at East<lb />

At their last supper meeting the<lb />
Delta Sigma Pi had as their guests<lb />
two men from the Redisco branch<lb />
here in Greenville. Mr. D. R. Callo-<lb />
way, branch manager of Redisco,<lb />
introduced Mr. Alton Johnson, who<lb />
was the main speaker of the evening.<lb />
Mr. Johnston is a graduate of East<lb />
Carolina College. At the present time<lb />
he is vice president of the South-<lb />
eastern Region of Redisco.<lb />
Mr. Johnston talked on many dif-<lb />
ferent subjects, one of interest to<lb />
the student body at the present time<lb />
being social fraternities. On this<lb />
subject he said, "If your fraternity<lb />
has .an object, creates fellowship,<lb />
and can get together and learn to ex-<lb />
press themselves ae a group, it can be<lb />
a very valuable organization. How-<lb />
ever, if they develop false values<lb />
and loss sight of objectives, they will<lb />
become worthless and detrimental to<lb />
the college<lb />
When asked if he thought college<lb />
training is necessary, Mr. Johnston<lb />
replied, "No, but it is a terrific<lb />
asset. If a person has a natural abili-<lb />
ty to use his common sense and is<lb />
able to express himself orally and<lb />
in writing, he can succeed. But col-<lb />
lege gives him a natural store of<lb />
knowledge to draw on<lb />
The closing event of the series<lb />
will be held Tuesday morning at 9:30<lb />
in the Austin auditorium. At this<lb />
time Dr. Pitte will talk on "Music<lb />

Teachers and others who are in-<lb />
terested, Dr. Cuthbert states, may<lb />
obtain tickets to all program meet-<lb />
ings for the sum of $1. Those at-<lb />
tending the dinner will pay for the<lb />
meal at the college dining hall.<lb />
Dr. Pitts recently retired as a<lb />
faculty member of Columbia Uni-<lb />
versity in New York City, where<lb />
she served for many years as pro-<lb />
fessor of music education. She is<lb />
past president of the Music Educa-<lb />
tors National Conference and is well<lb />
known as the author of texts and<lb />
articles on music education and as<lb />
co-editor of the RCA Record Library<lb />
for Children.<lb />
The wasps were making great sport<lb />
of it all. Around the classroom walls,<lb />
the ceilings, the window shades, the<lb />
lights they droningly swarmed. Oc-<lb />
casionally they dived by some pretty<lb />
girl's nose, evidently delighting in<lb />
seeing the weaker sex wiggle and<lb />
squirm in their seats.<lb />
They were causing such a dis-<lb />
traction that faculty members in<lb />
Austin, Wright, and Flanagan called<lb />
the Orkin Man at the college Main-<lb />
tenance building. He came over with<lb />
his little DDT gun and sprayed a-<lb />
round.<lb />
(Right now the DDT supply has<lb />
given out. They're awaiting the ar-<lb />
rival of their replenishment order.<lb />
Meanwfhile the wasps are continuing<lb />
to play havoc.<lb />
According to Dr. Knight of the<lb />
college Botany Department, here'<lb />
what is attracting them to our fair<lb />
lecture rooms. Contrary to the -popular<lb />
belief that they are exhibiting a<lb />
noble desire for intellectual edu-<lb />
cation, in essence they are only re-<lb />
sponding to Nature'e calling of<lb />
reproduction of one's kind.<lb />
This is the time of year in which<lb />
wasps begin preparation for the<lb />
coming winter by building nests in<lb />
which to lay their eggs and hatch<lb />
their young. Unlike bees which pro-<lb />
duce a wax from their own bodies<lb />
for nest building, wasps must use<lb />
wood for the making of their cone-<lb />
shaped homes.<lb />
Relatively high temiperaturea this<lb />
fall have kept the paper wasps alive<lb />
longer than usual. They have been<lb />
drawn to fc warmth of the buildings,<lb />
especially during nocturnal hours.<lb />
But we are fast wearying of their<lb />
ominous presence. The wasps must go!<lb />
