Actor Jeffrey Lynn Arrives<lb />
For Playhouse Production<lb />
By BRYAN HARRISON<lb />
Jeffrey Lynn, prominent actor of hesitate to accept the offer to come<lb />

last Monday. He is here to appear<lb />
in the East Carolina Playhouse pro-<lb />

Mr. Lynn ws invited to partici-<lb />

more interest and to aid the stu-<lb />

ability, according to Dr. J. A. Withey,<lb />
who is directing the play.<lb />
He has had an interesting and<lb />
varied career working in Hollywood,<lb />
the Broadway stage, television,<lb />
and other acting media. This is only<lb />
the second time he has worked with<lb />
a non-professional group since his<lb />
own college days. On his arrival to<lb />
the East Carolina campus, Mr. Lynn<lb />
said that this trip represents an<lb />
entirely new experience for him and<lb />
he was looking forward to working<lb />
with college students.<lb />
Enjoys Young People<lb />
Mr. Lynn further stated that he<lb />
enjoyed working with young people<lb />
rnd was willing to aid the acting<lb />
aspirants in any wav he could. He<lb />
explained that there is a 'lot of po-<lb />
tential acting material in colleges<lb />
that only needed to be developed.<lb />

Besides being a new experience<lb />
for Mr. Lynn, this represents the<lb />
first time that East Carolina has<lb />
had a professional actor to parti-<lb />

Although Lynn has acted in many<lb />
productions, he has never played<lb />
"State of the Union a Pulitzer<lb />

Jeffrey Lynn arrived at the New<lb />

play.<lb />
Jeffrey Lynn is married and has<lb />
two children. Although Mr. Lynn<lb />

On Social Fraternities<lb />
(The following is an article written by Her-<lb />
bert L. Brown, past chairman of the National<lb />
Interfratemity Conference. Mr. Brown has<lb />
been closely associated with fraternities all<lb />
over America, and his remarks in defense of<lb />
fraternities are an answer to those written by<lb />
Sloan Wilson which were published last week.)<lb />
To prove how vicious college fraternities<lb />
are, Mr. Sloan Wilson last week used as his<lb />
prime example a fraternity initiation at Mass-<lb />
achusetts Institute of Technology in which a<lb />
pledge fell through the ice and was drowned<lb />
in a pond.<lb />
I am sure that on sober second thought Mr.<lb />
Wilson will agree that he has not proved fra-<lb />
ternities "stupid "witless "juvenile and<lb />
"purposeless" (or any of the other angry ad-<lb />
jectives he hurled at them), by his single<lb />
example of tragedy. He should be well aware<lb />
that several hundred thousand college students<lb />
are prevented from falling into other holes<lb />
by fraternitiesfrom falling into social awk-<lb />
wardness, failing grades, athletic inertia, and<lb />
ignorance of group living.<lb />
I refuse to reply to Mr. Wilson in the style<lb />
of his attack; rather I will answer his "argu-<lb />
ments" with a defense of fraternities, which I<lb />
will attempt to make more well-proportioned<lb />
and level-headed than his broadside.<lb />
What would Mr. Wilson find if he would<lb />
look for the truth about college fraternities?<lb />
He would find, first of all. that there are 12,<lb />
000 chapters of Greek-letter societies in the<lb />
United States with a total membership of four<lb />
million. If fraternities are "purposeless" why<lb />
have 225.000 new members joined them in the<lb />
past three years? If fraternities are "un-<lb />
necessary why have 381 new chapters been<lb />
established in the same period? Would so many<lb />
Americans in so many places go into organi-<lb />
zations that are "stupid' witless and juvenile"?<lb />
If Mr. Wilson believes so, then his faith in<lb />
the wisdom of the American people is pretty<lb />
weak. Fraternity life is continuing to flourish<lb />
because fraternities exist to answer genuine<lb />
student and college needs, because fraternities<lb />
help in the attainment of worthy educational,<lb />
social and personal goals.<lb />
"On our campus says Chancellor Ethan A.<lb />
H. Shepley of Washington University (St.<lb />
Louis), "fraternities are a very real asset.<lb />
1 frankly don't know what we would do with-<lb />
out their influence and support. We are proud<lb />
of them and the record they have made The<lb />
testimony of dozens of other college presidents<lb />
men like George Bowman of Kent State<lb />
(Ohio). Harlan Hatcher of Michigan and<lb />
Milton Eisenhower of John Hopkins Universi-<lb />
tytells the same story: fraternities are<lb />
needed.<lb />
The reason that the great good in fraterni-<lb />
ties is so clouded is that, unfortunately, only<lb />
the freak prank makes the headlines; only the<lb />
tragic slip arouses righteous indignation. The<lb />
many valuable things that American frater-<lb />
nities do for their members, their colleges and<lb />
their communitiestheir many fine purpose!<lb />
and achievementsgo unheraided because ac-<lb />
tivities like working in a community chest<lb />
drive, or teaching a student how to conduct<lb />
himself socially, are hardly the stuff of news.<lb />
When a student is accidentally hurt in what<lb />
is usually harmless fun, people are quick to<lb />
crv out that fraternities should be driven from<lb />
the land like the plague. But when a student's<lb />
marks are raised by the help he receives from<lb />
his fraternity brothers, when a community<lb />
Red Cross receives blood from a chapter, when<lb />
a college is saved from a housing problem by<lb />
a group with Greek letters, too few people<lb />
know about it.<lb />
Exactly what are the values of American<lb />
fraternities to the student, to the school, to<lb />
the college communityvalues that are so of-<lb />
ten lost behind scare headlines and distorted<lb />
by attacks like Mr. Wilson's?<lb />
Fraternities make important contributions<lb />
to the minds, characters, and personalities of<lb />
their members.<lb />
First, each fraternity has a tutoring sys-<lb />
tem in which members proficient in certain<lb />
studies help members who are less proficient.<lb />
It is often the coaching of a brother that pre-<lb />
vents a fraternity man from failing a course.<lb />
Mr. Wilson mocks a fraternity's "boy scout<lb />
code of honor which makes their members<lb />
fairly burst with pride" but one great source<lb />
of fraternity pride is the achievement of high<lb />
scholastic marks by its members. Fraternity<lb />
brothers do not tutor one another simply to<lb />
prevent failure in subjects. They exchange<lb />

Time For Modern<lb />
Ghost Stories <lb />
Cusper Agrees, Too<lb />
CUSPER ADViLSED me not to<lb />
mention the incident. 'No one will<lb />
believe you he said. And Cusper<lb />
was right.<lb />
It all came about recently when<lb />
a friend of mine and I were faced<lb />
with the problem of composing a<lb />
story dealing with ghosts. That's<lb />
the assignment for the Halloween<lb />
meeting of the campus Creative<lb />
Writers' Club.<lb />
We got together and started dis-<lb />
cussing a plot and setting. I in-<lb />
sisted that we steer clear of mono-<lb />
tonous themes which usually find<lb />
ghost meeting girl, ghost chasing<lb />
girl, and ghost scaring the heck out<lb />
o girl. "Even let the ghost rape her<lb />
but let's put in a new twist I plead.<lb />
"IT HAS to be something modern<lb />
I continued, "ghostly but unusual<lb />
In an attempt to omit the ghost<lb />
angle entirely I proposed: "A car<lb />
carrying two young kovers over-<lb />
turns on a lonely road just as a<lb />
storm begins raging the girl<lb />
landing on one side of the highway<lb />
and her injured lover on the other.<lb />
He struggles in the fierce wind and<lb />
beating rain, attempting to reach her<lb />
side. But just as he completes one<lb />
half of his trip, a huge tanker whiz-<lb />
zes by, grinding him into the pave-<lb />
ment<lb />
My friend screwed his face into a<lb />
horrible frown, shuddered, and grunt-<lb />
ed "ugh<lb />
"It might not deal with ghosts<lb />
but it's ghostly I reminded him.<lb />
"Just think of the mood and emotion<lb />
you could create with something like<lb />
that<lb />
My colleague took the floor. He<lb />
couldn't seem to get his mind off<lb />
lonely beach scenes with jack-o-<lb />
lanterns burning in windows and an<lb />
Austin Building setting where the<lb />
main character was to hear foot-<lb />
steps following him down the long<lb />
halls.<lb />
I spoke against the ideas, he got<lb />
peeved, saw that it was past twelve<lb />
o'clock, sad said it was time he<lb />
started studying.<lb />
SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, Cus-<lb />
per entered. He reminded me of one of<lb />
these plastic raincoats you've seen<lb />
around campus. Some sort of light,<lb />
a flashlight maybe, seemed to be<lb />
gowing from his interior.<lb />
I took him to be a neighbor all<lb />
"lit up' before realizing this cha-<lb />
racter walked "through" the door<lb />
without opening it. "Even the boys<lb />
in Slay never get that high I<lb />
told myself.<lb />
"Somebody was trying to con-<lb />
tact me the raincoat said in a<lb />
()Lieaking voice.<lb />
I didn't comment. I couldn't open<lb />
my mouth. I told my friends I'd been<lb />
working too hard and they always<lb />
1 ughed it off. Now they'd be sorry.<lb />
"We got a signal <lb />
"Somebody got their signals<lb />
crossed I interrupted.<lb />
"We never get our signals crossed<lb />
the character retorted. "Somebody<lb />
wanted a modern ghost story and I<lb />
came to help out<lb />
CUSPER INSISTED that I calm<lb />
down and show him everything new<lb />
on campus. Later he explained that<lb />
he had once lived in Austin's attic,<lb />
was the cousin of some movie star<lb />
named Casper, and wrs glad to learn<lb />
that somebody was finally interested<lb />
in writing a modern ghost story. "I'm<lb />
scared sick of haunted houses the<lb />
little fellow commented.<lb />
THERE WERE still a few lights<lb />
in Cotten and Cusper yelped with<lb />
glee. He slipped "through" the weat<lb />
wall and was dancing on top of the<lb />
dorm approximately five minutes<lb />
later.<lb />
I couldn't help smiling, but shud-<lb />
dered at the thought of Chief Har-<lb />
rell's coming by. Cusper sensed my<lb />
right. "Don't worry nobody can see<lb />
you<lb />
Then I realized that I had fol-<lb />
lowed Cusper through Slay's walls<lb />
not to mention an interesting bull<lb />
session and a tense card game. I<lb />
realized, too, that I had pulled a<lb />
boner by not following him into<lb />
Cotten.<lb />
WE FINALLY settled down in<lb />
the College Union. He admitted it<lb />
wa nice but "too smail<lb />
"Why do I always hear so much<lb />
talk about the parking problem here<lb />
wh-n there are so many empty spaces<lb />
out there?" Cusper inquired.<lb />
"Those are staff parking spaces<lb />
I reminded him, but changed the<lb />
subject when he brought up the idea<lb />
of their riding bikes to class.<lb />
Tn.sper said he was tired of pre-<lb />
judiced segregationists, too. "They're<lb />
all white where I come from he<lb />
laughed.<lb />
And we discussed the presidential<lb />
election. "Sure I'm going to vote<lb />

Speaking Of<lb />
Segregation In The Southern Schools<lb />
By PURVIS BOYETTE<lb />
A friend was talking the other<lb />
day about whether he should go into<lb />
teaching or not. He maintained the<lb />
usual points held against teaching<lb />
for the young man, mostly the poor<lb />
salaries. Then someone suggested<lb />
what I think is the best reason I<lb />
have ever heard for teaching . . . one<lb />
teaches because he has a genuine<lb />
love of knowledge for its own sake.<lb />
that if you are in other fields such<lb />
as science, mathematics, etc you<lb />
snould not neglect the development<lb />
of your English which is nothing<lb />
iess than indispensrble.<lb />
if the white standards are lowered<lb />
any more, heaven help the Southern<lb />
education ai system.<lb />
We are told today that our so-<lb />
ciety, although it is improving, is<lb />
largely anti-intellectual. To the few<lb />
who are able to don the label of<lb />
"intellectual" they may be proud of<lb />
the one fact, perhaps above all<lb />
others, that they are the only legit-<lb />
imate aristocracy in our democracy.<lb />
The wealthy are a group all their<lb />
own but have no legitimate claim<lb />
to their position. The intellectual<lb />
holds highest honors a college<lb />
man's consolation while maybe just<lb />
becoming momentarily secure.<lb />
Profound statements are always<lb />
the simplest. I was delighted with<lb />
this oneone's thinking is only as<lb />
good as his English. Does this mean<lb />
that the English major will be the<lb />
best thinker in the business world?<lb />
Not necessarily so but it does mean<lb />
Segregation. Integration. NAiACP.<lb />
Supreme Court ruling. All these words<lb />
have been intimately connected with<lb />
the possibilities of combining the<lb />
white and Negro schools thereby<lb />
establishing, as some would have us<lb />
believe, an immediate equality of<lb />
rights for all men. But the writer<lb />
is not one to discuss whether in-<lb />
tegration is morally good or bad<lb />
ibut from an unadulterated practical<lb />
standpoint it is definitely bad for<lb />
our locality. Proof: according to one<lb />
of East Carolina's faculty members,<lb />
by the time the Negro student reaches<lb />
the fifth grade he is academically<lb />
one and a half years behind the<lb />
white student. At the first grade<lb />
level they are only slightly behind.<lb />
Now, do the supporters of integration<lb />
honestly think that education is<lb />
going to be improved when the two<lb />
r ces are mixed? It may well be<lb />
for the Negro but what about the<lb />
white children? When the two are<lb />
combined the white standards will<lb />
necessarily have to be lowered. And<lb />

Or in a crowd alone,<lb />
Sweet pain creeps in and folds<lb />

And last year lingers on.<lb />
I know that there were heartaches<lb />
And bad times with the good.<lb />
But they don't seem to haunt me<lb />
I almost wish they would.<lb />
But I remember mostly the<lb />
Way I felt inside.<lb />
The deep and knowing happiness<lb />
Of youth and being alive.<lb />
For I lived indeed so fully<lb />

Around The Campus<lb />
What Does Education Mean To You?<lb />
By JANET HILL<lb />
Education . . .<lb />
"What does an education mean<lb />
to you?"<lb />
This is a question that is often<lb />
put before freshmen who are en-<lb />
tering college for the first time.<lb />
However, this is a question which<lb />
these same freshmen are more qua-<lb />
lified to answer when they have<lb />
reached their ultimate goal their<lb />
senior year.<lb />
When a person enters college, he<lb />
accepts a challenge, a challenge to<lb />
improve his future through education?<lb />
In the course of his college life<lb />
the student should always maintain<lb />
sight of his intended goal. However,<lb />
this does not mean that he should<lb />
only "absorb" knowledge which can<lb />
be obtained from books.<lb />
The extra-curricular activities of<lb />
a college are for the benefit of the<lb />
student. Also, the social functions<lb />
are planned with an "eye" on variety<lb />
Cusper said, "Ike might start draft-<lb />
ing us and I like living lackadaisi-<lb />
cally<lb />
Cusper was interested in the new<lb />
SGA offices, but I admitted that I<lb />
couldn't explain how our politicians<lb />
could afford such a huge up-to-date<lb />
record collection. Cusper played all<lb />
of them and we talked about first<lb />
one campus politician and then<lb />
another. It was a long night.<lb />
and student enjoyment.<lb />
Therefore, the next time someone<lb />
asks the question, "What does an<lb />
education mean to you? don't an-<lb />
swer "books and a lot of studying<lb />
Sure, there is a lot of hard and<lb />
tedious work and study ahead of<lb />
every person beginning a college<lb />
career, but there is also a lot of<lb />
fun, laughter and good times, too!<lb />
Then, as the end of a person's<lb />
college days approaches he can look<lb />
back on the years spent in those<lb />
"ivy covered walls" and truthfully<lb />
say that his education has really<lb />
meant something to him and has<lb />
truly helped him become "the citi-<lb />

Ask any fraternity man and he will tell<lb />
you how often a "seminar" with his brothers<lb />
the night before an exam raised his marks<lb />
If this is a "boy scout" code, then to be out 0l<lb />
the "boy scouts" is to enjoy being a moron<lb />
It is an undisputed fact that the sociai<lb />
programs of fraternities give members poise<lb />
ml poiish which would develop more slov.<lb />
and perhaps not at allif the students<lb />
.ere to live alone. Fraternity parties out-<lb />
ings, dances, and sports enable a student to<lb />
shed his adolescent awkwardness and leara<lb />
to r.ove with confidence among members<lb />
of his own and the opposite sex. In additi<lb />
to helping a man's grades, fraternities help<lb />
him feel at ease in any facet.<lb />
Fraternities develop qualities of lead<lb />
in their members. They irculcate in then<lb />
standards of good conduct, good manners,<lb />
g od taste, and good sportsmanship<lb />
important, fraternities teach members to live<lb />
i -etht r in harmony and understanding.<lb />
Mr. Wilson rejoices over the advantage a<lb />
college student receives when he does not<lb />
j in a fraternity.<lb />
Shortly aft graduation, most<lb />
students will be askedwith no refusal<lb />
permittedto join a larger and less friend-<lb />
ly fraternity called the United States <lb />
Who does Mr. Wilson think will be<lb />
prepared to cope with the trials of group<lb />
living found in military servicethe<lb />
wolf" or the fraternity man? The essen<lb />
A merica. as President Eisenhower has so<lb />
often said, is the teamboth in peace and<lb />
war.<lb />
And does Mr. Wilson believe thai the<lb />
"lone wolf" can learn the principles of<lb />
vernment in his single room? lie can<lb />
about them in history textbooks; but the fra-<lb />
ternity man works with and studies th<lb />
principles as they are alive in the politi<lb />
organization of his chapter.<lb />
Critics like Mr. Wilson are silent at<lb />
the financial aid that Greek-letter societ<lb />
constantly provide for students. Thr .<lb />
the years, many fraternities have built<lb />
foundations to enable needier member- I j<lb />
continue higher education. Without grai<lb />
from these foundations, many boys w lid<lb />
never get a college education.<lb />
How do fraternities help the collegt<lb />
First, and most important, they do bo<lb />
housing many students. Fraternities furn<lb />
hi,rh-quality housing facilities wheh many<lb />
colleges could never offer. If Mr. Wila<lb />
considers this "juvenile" then we must <lb />
sume that he considers it "adult" for c<lb />
lege students to live in tents.<lb />
Lest Mr. Wilson think that the only acti -<lb />
ty of college fraternities is sending student-<lb />
out to fall through icy ponds, here are other-<lb />
that might interest him:<lb />
Fraternities throughout America donate<lb />
blood, work with community cheat driven,<lb />
yive children's Christmas parties, entertan<lb />
orphans and underprivileged children. Th<lb />
operate foreign student exchange program,<lb />
sell Easter and Christmas eds, coll.<lb />
( thing for refugees. They raise funds :<lb />
the fight against polio, cerebral palsy, he.<lb />
disease, and cancer, assist in the CARE<lb />
program; and in many other ways help loc<lb />
American, and world society.<lb />
Such activities are typical of fraternith<lb />
which Mr. Wilson considers "stupid an I<lb />
purposeless lie and other critics continue<lb />
to shout: "Yes, but what about 'hell week'<lb />
and discrimination?"<lb />
All right, what about them? The pe-<lb />
making the most noise about an occasion<lb />
"hell week" abuse do not seem to hearor<lb />
carethat fraternities themselves are eli-<lb />
minating archaic hazing practices. And i.<lb />
segment of American society has been mon<lb />
shocked or distressed over "hell week" trage-<lb />
dies than the college men and women of<lb />
Greek-letter societies.<lb />
Fraternity members are the first to admi<lb />
that outmoded hazing practices are a short-<lb />
coming in the fraternity system. In the p,<lb />
10 years, "hetl week" has become "h<lb />
week" on most campuses. Instead of getting<lb />
lost in the woods, students now spend his<lb />
initiation period working on chores which<lb />
improve their fraternity houses, their school<lb />
and their community.<lb />
Fraternities have been further condemned<lb />
for being selective in choosing their mem-<lb />
bers but can you, Mr. Wilson, name a single<lb />
social organization in this country that<lb />
does not practice some type of selectivity<lb />
in the choice of its members? But just to<lb />
set the record straight, a few decades ago<lb />
44 of the 58 social fraternities in the Na-<lb />
tional Interfratemity Conference at that<lb />
time had restrictive membership clan<lb />
based on race, color, or national origin in<lb />
their constitutions. Today, no more than a<lb />
dozen of the 61 groups in the Conference<lb />
have such clauses. .<lb />
People are innate joiners, Mr. Wilson. If<lb />
there were no fraternities at colleges, cliques<lb />
of people with similar interests would, na-<lb />
turally, get together anyway.<lb />
In fact, consider what colleges would be<lb />
without fraternities.<lb />
There would be fewer students (for there<lb />
would be fewer scholarships), lower marks,<lb />
overcrowded dormitories and less effective<lb />
social, athletic, and self-government pro-<lb />
grams for great numbers of students.<lb />
Fraternitiesor groups like them (whe-<lb />
ther they are called "eating clubs" or<lb />
"houses" or "societies")will always -xist<lb />
at colleges because they answer a definite<lb />
need. Dr. Milton Eisenhowerwho has been<lb />
president of three colleges and who was re-<lb />
cently vappointed by his brother Dwight to<lb />
help make North, Central and South Ameri-<lb />
ca one big'fraternitysummed it up this<lb />
way: "Fraternities and sororities are work-<lb />

If East Carolina doesn't quite make<lb />
it into the Southern Conference any<lb />
time soon, the students will have no<lb />
one but themselves to blame.<lb />
At first, it was the fault of the<lb />
Athletic Department, according to<lb />
,knts still won't cooperate.<lb />
The school's athletic department<lb />
has met every demand, has even gone<lb />
beyond, by applying to the Confer-<lb />
ence more lhan once a year. It has<lb />
ul filled its job in every possible<lb />
way. As ar as East Carolina's<lb />
the loud and angry shouts of ECC's) athletic condition is concerned, it is<lb />
-tudents. They felt cheated, because<lb />
inere were no big name teams on<lb />
the Pirate schedules. Now that the<lb />
Athletic Department has obliged by<lb />
adding V.PI (one of the nation's top<lb />
15 teams), Stetson, Morris Harvey<lb />
. rid even Richmond, the students<lb />
are not willing to back up the team.<lb />
Last week's turnout for the Morrii<lb />
Harvey contest here at College Sta-<lb />
dium was iti ul. Out of a student<lb />
body of over 3,000, only approximate-<lb />
ly 200 were present. And we notn't<lb />
forget th t the band accounted for<lb />
a large total of that number.<lb />
Whose Fault Now?<lb />
Another thing that was charged<lb />
to the Athletic department was the<lb />
lack of a substantial program. East<lb />
Carolina didn't have enough separate<lb />
sports to challenge Southern Con-<lb />
ference teams. 60 the students sur-<lb />
mised. It was true. Now, the de-<lb />
partment has a full system of golf,<lb />
tennis, basketball, football, baseball,<lb />
track and swimmingbut the stu-<lb />
physically capable of competing with<lb />
the larger SC members. It is ready,<lb />
qualified.<lb />
But for each step forward the<lb />
school t kes, the student body takes<lb />
a giant step backwardsimply by<lb />
not going to the games.<lb />
Mother Complex<lb />
One thing is certain: a "Big Time"<lb />
school is not merely determined by<lb />
he kind of :ootball team it displays.<lb />
There must be spirit and support<lb />
from the student body. No one knows<lb />
this better t an the Southern Con-<lb />
ference officials. They will never<lb />
grant entrance to a school that<lb />
simply won't support the team.<lb />
The gigantic "Mother Complex or<lb />
whatever it is that compels Eat<lb />
Carolina students to go scurrying<lb />
home each weekend, is fast tearing<lb />
down any chance of ECC's entering<lb />
the SC. Maybe, if Mother would<lb />
write more often their children could<lb />
learn to endure a football game here<lb />
oiwv in a while.<lb />
Morris Harvey Dumps Bucs<lb />
By Lopsided 28-0 Margin<lb />
The Golden Eagles of Morris<lb />
Harvey College proved a strong foe<lb />
last Saturday in College Stadium<lb />
as they defeated the .Pirates by a<lb />
margin of 28-0.<lb />
Through the entire evening, the<lb />
visitors from Charleston, West Vir-<lb />
ginia, bulled their way through the<lb />
ineffective Pirate defense. Morrii<lb />
Harvey displayed a devastating at-<lb />
ack which the Pirates tried desper-<lb />
itely to contain but to no avail.<lb />
Injury-riddled as a result of<lb />
earlier games, the Pirates seemed<lb />
to lack the fire which had led them<lb />
to two straight wins on previous<lb />
encounters against conference com-<lb />
petition.<lb />
Trying to aid the Pirates in the<lb />

win of the season.<lb />
The standings rank the Bears in<lb />
first place by a good margin. Ca-<lb />

last week in a 14-13 loss to Elon,<lb />
to help the Bear cause.<lb />
These two games were the only-<lb />
ones ii North State competition last<lb />

to defeat, at the hands of outsiders.<lb />
E st Carolina, of course, bowed<lb />

By MIKE KATSIAS<lb />
East Carolina's determined mer-<lb />
men have begun practice sessions in<lb />
the familiar realm of Memorial<lb />
Pool under the tutelage of Coach<lb />
Ray Martinez, for what promises<lb />
to be a very interesting season for<lb />
the Pirate swimmers.<lb />
Ajfter close observation in the<lb />
initial sessions, Coach Martinez<lb />
face two situations of alarm-<lb />
ing scope. No longer will the likes<lb />
of Frank Moore, Ronnie Rose, and<lb />
Bill West garner valuable, meet-<lb />
winning points for the Pirate cause.<lb />
Adding to the precarious state is<lb />
the fact that the Bu mermen are<lb />
also few in number. Without the aid<lb />
of scholarships, it is a difficult taslT"<lb />
for anyone to field a strong aggre-<lb />
gation to match the powerful teams<lb />
the Pirates will face. Yet, last year<lb />
the mermen enjoyed their most suc-<lb />
cessful season since their conception.<lb />
(Among the returning letternven<lb />
back to aid the Pirate body for sec-<lb />
tional recognition this year are: Jim<lb />
Meads, who excels in the dashes;<lb />
Jack Koeberling, one who can easily<lb />
develop into one of the area's finest<lb />
breast-stroke performers; Boh Saw-<lb />
yer, a backstroke par excellent;<lb />
Harold McKee, who will play an<lb />
important role in the individual 220<lb />
and 440; and Ken Midgette, a boy<lb />
who is rapidly becoming regarded as<lb />
one of Martinez's brightest lights.<lb />
Last year's meets reflected the<lb />
support the student body gave the<lb />
mermen, as they defeated such<lb />
powers as William & Mary of Nor-<lb />
folk, Clemson, Davidson, and Wash-<lb />
ington & Lee. Such teams as these<lb />
and a host of new opponents will<lb />
find their way to the confine of<lb />
Memorial Pool this season.<lb />
Even though he is short on ma-<lb />
terial, Coach Martinez is expected<lb />
to produce another winning combi-<lb />
nation with the assistance of his<lb />
veteran nucleus.<lb />
(Next Week's article will deal with<lb />
the newcomers who are present on<lb />
this year's team and comments from<lb />
the man who leads the mermen.)<lb />

Committee Appointed To Study<lb />
Graduation Exercises; Group<lb />
Discusses Fraternity Poll<lb />
By ELIZABETH HYLTON<lb />
Matters taken up at the weekly<lb />
meeting of the S. G. A. included an<lb />
opinion poll on fraternities to be held<lb />
October 29, constitution changes to<lb />
add to the handbook the salaries of<lb />
the editors, business managers, and<lb />
officers of S. G. A. to be voted on<lb />
by the student body, and a proposal<lb />
to change Article 17, Section 4 B,<lb />
Article 6, Section 7 B as to the<lb />
manner of selection of the newspaper<lb />
editor.<lb />
Wiley Teal, chairman of the E-<lb />
lections Committee, announced that<lb />
an opinion poll will be conducted<lb />
October 29 in the College Student<lb />
Union. This poll will be a survey<lb />
of how the student body feels about<lb />
social fraternities.<lb />
O'Brien Edwards brought to the<lb />
attention of the legislature certain<lb />
constitutional changes which had<lb />
been passed by S. G. A. March 28,<lb />
1956. He asked why action had not<lb />
been taken on these changes which<lb />
dealt with the members of the Ex-<lb />
ecutive Committee, and the salaries<lb />
of the editors, business managers,<lb />
and the officers of the S. G. A. A<lb />
discussion followed. A motion was<lb />
made that an election by the student<lb />
body on these and other constitutional<lb />
changes be set by the Elections Com-<lb />
mittee at some date during the fall<lb />
quarter of 1956.<lb />
Constitutional Changes Offered<lb />
Jimmy Phelps made an announce-<lb />
ment of certain constitutional changes<lb />
he wished to offer the S. G. A. These<lb />
changes will affect Article 17, Sec-<lb />
tion 4 B, and Article 6, Section 7 B<lb />
and will be presented to the legis-<lb />
lature at the next session.<lb />
Eddie Dennis offered a suggest-<lb />
ion for the election of the Home-<lb />
coming Queen. He suggested for dis-<lb />
cussion a plan which would eliminate<lb />
freshman girls in the election of<lb />
the Homecoming Queen. Eddie stated<lb />
that there was some feeling among<lb />
the students that the Queen be an<lb />
upperclassman who has earned this<lb />
honor through her merits for past<lb />
years. ,<lb />
Wiley Teal asked if any action<lb />
had been taken on a motion which<lb />
had been passed during the Summer<lb />
Session of S. G. A. concerning the<lb />
type of diploma given to ECC grad-<lb />
uates. President Dock Smith an-<lb />
swered Teal's question by saying that<lb />
the diplomas had been changed.<lb />
Ruffin Offers Plan<lb />
Thomas Ruffin was recognized by<lb />
the legislature and given the floor.<lb />
Mr. 'Ruffin asked the legislative<lb />
body to consider the type of grad-<lb />
uation exercises conducted here at<lb />
East Carolina. He stated that he<lb />
would like to see tie graduates re-<lb />
ceive more recognition. A plan that<lb />
he sffered or consideration pro-<lb />
vided for the departmentalizing and<lb />
division of the class according to<lb />
those receiving A.B. and B.S. de-<lb />
grees. Walter Hasty made a motion<lb />
that the president appoint a com-<lb />
mittee to study the graduation ex-<lb />
ercises. President Dock Smith ap-<lb />
pointed Thomas Ruffin to act as<lb />
chairman of tht committee and ap-<lb />
pointed Walter Hasty, Jimmy Phelps,<lb />
Mary Lou Wyrick, and Harry Girode<lb />
to serve on the committee.<lb />
Jimmy Phelps asked for infor-<lb />
mation concerning a committee work-<lb />
ing on the Honor System. The Presi-<lb />
dent said that he knew of no ex-<lb />
isting committee. A diseussion fol-<lb />
lowed about the trial of the Honor<lb />
System in certain classes. Ann Mayo<lb />
said that the new Advisory Council<lb />
was responsible for various classes<lb />
trying the Honor System to see how<lb />
it worked.<lb />

PLAYHOUSE<lb />
Continued from page 1<lb />
racter of Grant Matthews, who is a<lb />
successful business man aad not a<lb />
politician. He believes that politics<lb />
and the men and women engaged in<lb />
it should be more concerned about<lb />
character and morals and less in-<lb />
terested in votes and connections.<lb />
This attitude is viewed by the party<lb />
big wigs, who are trying to push<lb />
him for the nomination, as an un-<lb />
realistic and naive approach to big-<lb />
time politics. Complications soon set<lb />
in as a result of these two conflict-<lb />
ing ideas.<lb />
James Conover (Bob Tyndall) and<lb />
Spike McManus (Bill Dixon) are<lb />
the two politicians who are hoping<lb />
for a convention deadlock so that<lb />
they can put the potential dark horse<lb />
through. The only complication to<lb />
the plan seems to be the fact that<lb />
Matthews is separated from his wife<lb />
and has been carrying on an alleged<lb />
romance with another woman. Also<lb />
the candidate's incredible honesty!<lb />
provides him with an amazing af-<lb />
finity for .speaking his mindat the<lb />
wrong time.<lb />
Bandwagon Rolls<lb />
The bandwagon really begins to<lb />
roll when Grant accepts a speaking<lb />
engagement which tips the country<lb />
off to the fact that he is a serious<lb />
prospect for the nomination. Also,<lb />
speaking to a labor group, Grant<lb />
sticks his foot in his mouth much to<lb />
the chagrin of his campaign mana-<lb />
ger. More complications occur as<lb />
Grant is forced to live with his es-<lb />
tranged wife for the sake of ap-<lb />
pearances.<lb />
A crisis results in every scene,<lb />
spurred- on by Matthews' constant<lb />
stubborness to be completely honest<lb />
and by the antagonism which de-<lb />
velops between the two women.<lb />
chairmen of the affair, have an-<lb />
nounced that several new booths have<lb />
been added to this year's carnival.<lb />
Concessions included in the plans<lb />
are bingo, cake walk, dart throwing,<lb />
guess-the-corn, pull-a-string, car rac-<lb />
ing, pitching the ball, ping pong,<lb />
fortune telling, and penny pitching.<lb />
In addition to these, there will<lb />
be a concession stand where one can<lb />
buy homemade candy and cake, and<lb />
a door prize will be given to the hold-<lb />
er of the lucky ticket.<lb />
Also included in the plans is a<lb />
stage show with outstanding campus<lb />
talent participating, and to highlight<lb />
the carnival, a king and queen will<lb />
be chosen and crowned.<lb />
According to the chairman the<lb />
doors will open at 7 p. m. and the<lb />
admission price will be 25c.<lb />

New Uniforms<lb />
This year the strutters appear in<lb />
new uniforms, designed last year by<lb />
Betty June Davenport and Mr. Car-<lb />

black tights, detachable skirts, black<lb />
trim, silver braid, and silver buttons.<lb />
Their shakos are of black imitation<lb />
