Safety vs. Danger<lb />
The East Carolinian pointed out last week<lb />
that a committee had been appointed by Donald<lb />
Umstead to investigate the possibility of install-<lb />
in a traffic signal at the intersection of Fifth<lb />
Street and the main entarnce by the administra-<lb />
tion building.<lb />
It was gratifying to hear that Mr. F. D.<lb />
Duncan, college treasurer, was in favor of the<lb />
proposal made by the committee. East Carolina's<lb />
administration does not have the authority, how-<lb />
ever, to decide if a traffic signal is needed at<lb />
this intersection. Mr. Duncan referred the com-<lb />
mittee members to the Greenville City Manager.<lb />
The Greenville City Manager then referred<lb />
the committee to the City Council which will make<lb />
the final decision as to whether or not a traffic<lb />
signal will be installed at this intersection.<lb />
Committee members are scheduled to appear<lb />
before the City Council October 13. At that time<lb />
they will present a letter to the council offering<lb />
their proposal for the installation of the traffic<lb />
signal.<lb />
Fifth Street is heavily traveled during the<lb />
day. and much more so in the late afternoon and<lb />
during the night. Commuters, unable to procure<lb />
parking spaces on campus, are forced to park<lb />
their cars along Fifth Street. These cars block<lb />
the view of drivers leaving the college entrances<lb />
and making it impossible to see oncoming traffic<lb />
until the driver is already in the street and pre-<lb />
paring to turn. (This is a very dangeroug risk<lb />
for any driver to have to take.<lb />
A traffic signal at this one intersection would<lb />
not only decrease the inherent danger that pre-<lb />
vails at the main entrance to our campus, but<lb />
would also help to alleviate the problem that<lb />
exists at the other entrances in front of Austin<lb />
Building and Garrett Hall. J. F.<lb />
School Spirit; An Asset<lb />
School spirit! We constantly hear students<lb />
speaking of this intangible asset of the colleges<lb />
and universities around the nation. Does East<lb />
Carolina possess this characteristic held in esteem<lb />
by so many? Do her students want this attribute<lb />
and do they strive to attain it, or do they take<lb />
that "don't care" or "matter-of-fact" attitude?"<lb />
Last Saturday night at the football game<lb />
between the Pirates and the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears<lb />
the school spirit, so to speak, was at a low ebb<lb />
until East Carolina advanced to the one-yard<lb />
line and then failed to achieve a touchdown. Do<lb />
our cheers only go up when we are victorious?<lb />
We should stick behind our boys if they win or<lb />
lose. That's true school spirit.<lb />
The cheerleaders so ably led by Barbara<lb />
Speight yelled with high spirits themselves, while<lb />
the students responded whenever they liked.<lb />
They are our cheerleaders, our representatives, to<lb />
lead us. At times during the game, the handful<lb />
f Lenoir-Rhyne students could be heard over the<lb />
East Carolina cheering section, which occupied<lb />
the whole south side of the field.<lb />
Our college, probably the largest in the con-<lb />
It rence, has one of the poorer school spirit as-<lb />
sets. We should have the best! We hear talk of<lb />
Fast Carolina's wanting to rank with State, the<lb />
University and other larger schools, but can we<lb />
do this without a great deal of school spirit and<lb />
proudness of our very fine team?<lb />
Let us think this matter over and when the<lb />
next home game comes let all the students attend<lb />
and cheer our Pirates on to victory!F. D.<lb />

by Joyce Smith<lb />
T e Student Government plays no<lb />
small pan: in the campus events and<lb />
with such an important role members<lb />
of tie legislatore should be ever<lb />
conscious of their duties. Each per-<lb />
son holding a seat on the legislature<lb />
has such a position either because he<lb />
is an o.ficer or because he repre-<lb />
sents a particular organization.<lb />
We owe our services to our fellow<lb />
classmates but need we say that this<lb />
obligation is ofken neglected. Emo<lb />
Boado, last year's unsuccessful can-<lb />
didate for SGA president, along with,<lb />
others, sees a lag in the legislature.<lb />
At the September 21 meeting he<lb />
brought to the legislature's attention<lb />
there had been little business<lb />
Who's Who At East Carolina<lb />

Physical Ed Major Heads Circle K Club<lb />
Beginning tonight the opening event of the<lb />
Entertainment Series is the performance of the<lb />
tamed U. S. Marine Band. It will be the first time<lb />
for most of the students to hear this group which<lb />
is on a nation-wide tour. In appeal this program<lb />
should rate high for military or marching music<lb />
is most familiar to the student from Elizabeth<lb />
City to Wilmington to Asheville.<lb />
It is hoped that the student body will turn<lb />
out en masse to attend this first performance of<lb />
the entertainment scheduled for thi year. Pro-<lb />
fessors might encourage the freshmen who are<lb />
always shy at trying something for the first time<lb />
by attempting to show the advantages of attend-<lb />
ing such events. There is always the temptation<lb />
of no homework.<lb />
Each year the entertainment committee puts<lb />
forth much effort to get a top notch and yet<lb />
well rounded schedule of events. From such well-<lb />
known artists as Les Brown and his Band ap-<lb />
pearing November 30 to the brilliant Walter Noo-<lb />
na, pianist and graduate of ECC who appears<lb />
April 12, it can be seen that the various pleasures<lb />
of all should be well served.<lb />
So, start a good habit tonight and listen to<lb />
the music of the Marines. A little relaxation away<lb />
from the books will freshen the mind, so they say.<lb />
J.F.R.<lb />
in at<lb />
discussed at the first two meetings<lb />
of the legislature. Boado emphasized<lb />
that the kfislaiure members should<lb />
continually be on the leokout for<lb />
business to bring before the SGA.<lb />
The interest of people like Mr. Boado<lb />
is what keeps a good legislature<lb />
moving.<lb />
In response to Emo's reminder,<lb />
President Don Umstead took partial<lb />
blame for this lack of business. Ac-<lb />
cording to Umstead this lack of busi-<lb />
ness could be due to the fact that<lb />
he had not called an Executive Coun-<lb />
cil meeting. It seems that he thought<lb />
there would be enough business from<lb />
the floor. His mistake can only prove<lb />
t at things like that should not be<lb />
taken for granted. However, even if<lb />
the Executive Council had met there<lb />
might have been business that they<lb />
did not know about. The sincere and<lb />
tactful legislature member is ever<lb />
aware of the things that go on around<lb />
about him. Iff we as individuals see<lb />
something going on that needs to be<lb />
brought before the legilature it is<lb />
u to us to see .hat something is<lb />
done about it.<lb />
Another lag of interest is seen right<lb />
in the meetings. When issues are<lb />
discussed most representatives just<lb />
sit back and let a minor few discuss<lb />
the matter. At times many matters<lb />
go by without' any discussion at all.<lb />
Legislative members often complain<lb />
thout the decisions that are made<lb />
and yet they never voice their opin-<lb />
ion while active discussion is going<lb />
on in i'he meeting. If you have any-<lb />
thing to say for or against an issue,<lb />
why not say it while the matter is<lb />
on the floor?<lb />
Studjents who are noit on the leg-<lb />
islature can do their part also. If<lb />
you know any issue is coming up<lb />
that you would like to see promoted,<lb />
talk it up among the legislative<lb />
numbers before it is brought to the<lb />
legislature.<lb />
If you are interested in what goes<lb />
on during a particular meeting you<lb />
are welcome to sit through the ses-<lb />
sion. Student government meetings<lb />
are by ro means closed.<lb />
A new school year is now well<lb />
underway and the Student Govern-<lb />
mtn can promote many important<lb />
programs if interest enough is shown.<lb />
As is true with so many organiza-<lb />
tions, the benefits derived are ex-<lb />
actly what you put into them.<lb />
