East Carolina Professor, Dr. Ed Hirshberg,<lb />
Directs Shakespeare Television Class<lb />
Shawn above is Dr. Ed Hirshberg as he present the work of William<lb />
pr te the people of eastern North Carolina via TV.<lb />
Each afternoon, Monday through<lb />
Friday, from 4:00 to 4:30, East Car-<lb />
olinas own Dr. Edgar Hirshberg<lb />
gingerly strolls to his desk in front<lb />
jf the television cameras of WNCT-<lb />
TV, as the announcer dramatically<lb />
introduces another series in the works<lb />
erf William Shakespeare. This<lb />
Shakespeare TV series taught by<lb />
Dr. Hirshberg is only one of a few<lb />
such programs of this type on tele-<lb />
vision which actually offer class<lb />
crtdit to the TV audience. The entire<lb />
Shakespeare seriesabout 12 weeks<lb />
-is the equivalent of 30 class meet-<lb />
ings or three quarter hours of credit.<lb />
Many who havt seen Dr. Hirsh-<lb />
1 erg's Shakespeare program have no-<lb />
ticed and commented on the back-<lb />
ground of beautiful volumes topped<lb />
try a bust of Shakespeare himself.<lb />
In actuality, this is a picture which<lb />
was taken in East Carolina College's<lb />
oyner Library and then placed on<lb />
a small glass slide that Is projected<lb />
on a transparent screen.<lb />
At the beginning of the day's pro-<lb />
gram, Dr .Hirshberg announces the<lb />
kfaaaci for the day by employing the<lb />
oat of the studio blackboard upon<lb />
which have been written the play,<lb />
-cene, and aot which are to be dis-<lb />
:u se.i. Then, the lesson proceeds, as<lb />
any of Dr. Hirshberg's former atu-<lb />
dents know, in a scholarly fashion<lb />
during which Dr. Hirshberg reads and<lb />
explains in thorough layman lan-<lb />
guage the magnificent phrases used<lb />
by the Bard. Also, Dr. Hirahbra<lb />
use of visual aids maea the Shakes-<lb />
by Janet Hill<lb />
pea tea n play being discussed more<lb />
easily understood. Before each TV<lb />
appearance, it is necessary for Dr.<lb />
Hivshrberg to write up que sheets<lb />
or himself and whoever the director<lb />
of the show is for that particular<lb />
day. These sheets contain Ikies from<lb />
the play whwh tell the director when<lb />
to have the set ies or pictures from<lb />
the play which Dr. Hirshberg is dis-<lb />
cussing flashed on the screen. Gam-<lb />
era I stays on Dr. Hirshberg untile<lb />
according to the que sheet-Camera<lb />
II is used to project the picture<lb />
scenes!<lb />
Dr. Hirshberg has collected pic-<lb />
tures fsr his TV programs from the<lb />
English department files which are<lb />
the result of many years research by<lb />
Dr. Turner, Miss Hooper, and Miss<lb />
Greene. He has also collected pic-<lb />
tures and information for his pro-<lb />
gram from the American Shakes-<lb />
pearean Theater in Stratford, Conn<lb />
from the Canadian Shakespearean<lb />
Theater in Toronto, Canada, from<lb />
the New York State University, and<lb />
'rom "The Shakespearean News-<lb />
Letter a monthy magazine.<lb />
During the first week of ths<lb />
Shakespeare series, a film from the<lb />
University of California was used<lb />
showing a model of the original<lb />
Shakespearean Theater from the<lb />
Folger Shakespearean Library in<lb />
Washington, D. C. Also, Dr. Hirsh-<lb />
Herg hoes to be able to get a class<lb />
o' students on his program before<lb />
the series ends.<lb />
Th plays which Dr. Hirshberg has<lb />
already discussed and will discuss in<lb />
the future are Hamlet, Othello, As<lb />
You Like It, Macbeth, and Julius<lb />
Caesar. The latter two plays, he<lb />
hopes to do in cooperation with vari-<lb />
ous high school classes in the area<lb />
which will be studying the same<lb />
plays.<lb />
In order to create wider interest<lb />
and variety in his program, Dr.<lb />
Hirshberg occasionally em; loys the<lb />
services of both students and faculty<lb />
members in reading scenes from the<lb />
play being discussed. Students and<lb />
faculty members who have and will<lb />
participate in the series are Wallace<lb />
Wolverton, Frances Smith, Marian<lb />
Evans, Pat Goodwin, Nancy Cooke,<lb />
Barbara Harrell, All Carr, Dr. Crock-<lb />
ett, Dr. Pasti, Dr. Allison, Mr. Dade,<lb />
Mrs. Agnes Barrett, and others.<lb />
Dr. Hirshberg graduated from<lb />
Harvard College and received his<lb />
Ph.D. from Yale. He has been a<lb />
member of the faculty oi East Caro-<lb />
lina College for two years and three<lb />
summers, and he stoutly declares<lb />
that he certainly appreciates visual<lb />
aids now more than ever before. Ac-<lb />
cording to Dr. Hirshberg, it is ac-<lb />
tually much harder to teach an un-<lb />
seen TV class because there is no<lb />
class participation. However, Dr.<lb />

Long Row To Hoe<lb />
Donald Umstead has begun his. tenuie in<lb />
office as president o( ear campus Student Gov-<lb />
ernment Association, As president he is a key<lb />
figure in campus politics and his office is impor-<lb />
tant in that he will help make decisions which will<lb />
affect ail of us here at East Carolina.<lb />
M.uiy aie still awe-stricken at the fact that<lb />
Umstead is president of the SGA. Don wasn't<lb />
very active in student government work last year,<lb />
and students were astounded to learn that he had<lb />
chosen to seek the office of SGA president.<lb />
The majority felt that lie was definitely<lb />
wasting Ins time in competing against the popu-<lb />
lar Emo Boado ami the experienced Louis Single-<lb />
ton. Despite these odds I'mstead and Ins support-<lb />
era set out to work. Through their efforts students<lb />
learned f his two years' work with his student<lb />
government in high school, his excellent scholas-<lb />
tic record, and his intense interest in finding a<lb />
solution to the lack of student interest in their<lb />
student government.<lb />
The objectives covered In the veteran's plat-<lb />
form were: t appoint a committee to work with<lb />
the campus police in solving traffic problems;<lb />
. trading c ncessions to the girls' dormitories;<lb />
a publicity program for the school besides ath-<lb />
letic . activating the Men's .Judiciary: more week-<lb />
end activities for students; ami a publication oi<lb />
a periodical financial statement showing cost and<lb />
appropriations.<lb />
The East Carolinian (Ue not question the<lb />
perseverance o' Donald I'mstead. We believe that<lb />
he will work faithfully and will prove him-<lb />
self a stanch doer in working towards a bigger<lb />
and better East Carolina.J. F.<lb />
Students Abuse Privileges<lb />
As students of East Carolina College we<lb />
sh uld be proud of our College Union, but instead<lb />
some students choose to abus the privilege. Stu-<lb />
dents are reminded that drinks and food are not<lb />
to be taken into the lounge. It is a frequent com-<lb />
plaint i f students that there is never any room<lb />
in the soda shop for eating and drinking. It ap-<lb />
pears that many students use the booths for long<lb />
social chats rather than just eating purposes.<lb />
Right beside the soda shop we have a spacious<lb />
lounge, so why not use that when a group wants<lb />
to get together for a few minutes. This will give<lb />
main more people the opportunity of enjoying<lb />
that'short break between classes. If this sugges-<lb />
tion were carried out much crowdedness and con-<lb />
fusion would be alleviated in the soda shop.<lb />
When you do take the opportunity to use the<lb />
lounge, remember that it will only look nice as<lb />
long as we desire to keep it that way. As college<lb />
students we believe that you are old enough to<lb />
refrain from such things as putting your feet on<lb />
the furniture, strewing paper, and putting cig-<lb />
arettes on the table.<lb />
The College Union is just one of a few places<lb />
on campus which deserves attention. Classroom<lb />
buildings, the dormitories and the library should<lb />
also deserve mention. Destruction by students<lb />
often occurs here also. We are not making a very<lb />
good name for ourselves when we go around<lb />
leaving our own personal marks of destruction.<lb />
In the future may we suggest that you treat all<lb />
college property as if it were yours. After all.<lb />
the buildings are here for your benefit.J. S.<lb />
A Basic Need<lb />
We were sorry to have to hear Dr. Blessick<lb />
comment on the pitifully small group in attend-<lb />
ance at Tuesday's initial chapel service. The in-<lb />
spiring talks by Dr. Messick and other faculty<lb />
members which the chapel programs offer us<lb />
throughout the year should draw larger audien-<lb />

Religio i i. ceitainly a basic need in the lives<lb />
of everyone. Ail of us need to take time out of<lb />
every day for religious meditation. The chapel<lb />
programs have been organized for the benefit of<lb />
each one of us.<lb />
Attend chapel next Tuesday evening at 5<lb />
o'clock in Austin Auditorium. You'll be glad you<lb />

During her freshman year she was<lb />

the Women's Judiciary her junior<lb />

the top positions on campus by being<lb />

"You might say with this position<lb />
I really get the inside scope of every-<lb />

Ann Bowles<lb />
in her eye. She feels that anyone<lb />
serving on the judiciary must assume<lb />
an impartial attitude and try above<lb />
all to be fair to everyone.<lb />
Our main objective of the Wo-<lb />

to reword the handbook because a<lb />
lot of offenses are the result of mis-<lb />

of the rules and he regulations<lb />

the state or maybe Virginia. The<lb />
she wants to begin work on her<lb />
master's degree in math at the<lb />
University of North Carolina during<lb />
her vacations. Being a math major<lb />

Voluntary segregation consists trie frV<lb />

Cooperation, alone, can bring about this pro-<lb />

The Supreme Court dot not forbid a dual<lb />
school system "in which the children of each race<lb />

white and Negro as good educational advantage<lb />
as they have had in the past. Both races wi suf-<lb />

In North Carolina there are 650,000 whits<lb />
children, compared to the 275,000 Negro children.<lb />
There are 20.000 white teachers while there are<lb />
8,000 Negro teachers.<lb />
Governor Luther Hodges believes that the<lb />
voluntary segregation program is the best hope<lb />
to this great problem. Rejection of this proposal<lb />
will mean integration or the abandonment of the<lb />

East Carolina Honesty<lb />
At the post office window, a senior<lb />
