Closed Doors Might Hart<lb />
is closing: the library during Entertainment<lb />
Series programs going to be a policy of the col-<lb />
lege this year? We have heard many students<lb />
scussing the matter arguing that the library<lb />
:ould remain open for those who desire to study<lb />
ther than attend he program.<lb />
If a student needs to study, there is no rea-<lb />
why Le should not be allowed to do so. There<lb />
pre times when a person might not be able to<lb />
iarrange his work in order to get to the library<lb />
efore it closes on the nights of such programs<lb />
entioned. Why should we have to suffer penal-<lb />
ties that come about becouse he is unable to study<lb />
in the library?<lb />
True enough, Jiere would be persons who<lb />
would not be able to attend the programs who<lb />
wanted to if the library was kept open during<lb />
such nights, but there are often many sacrifices<lb />
that must be maae when a student or anyone<lb />
else is working. Probably there would not need<lb />
to be a large a staff on hand during the pro-<lb />
grams, and the work might could be arranged<lb />
so that the same group would not be working<lb />
Qurirg all the programs.<lb />
There would more than likely be nights<lb />
when no students would even care whether or<lb />
not the library was eiosed; but as the quarter<lb />
is soon coming to a close in about three weeks<lb />
and now with a few "flunk slips" circulated,<lb />
one night of studying is important, and any per-<lb />
son wanting to use the library should not be<lb />
denied this right.<lb />
Praises For Their Efforts<lb />
Members of the Greenville Junior Chamber<lb />
of Commerce have openQd a fund drive for<lb />
scholarships to Ease Carolina College. Approxi-<lb />
mately $22,000 has already been solicited from<lb />
local business men.<lb />
This movement of the Jaycees and business<lb />
men in Greenville shows their interest in the<lb />
college and their sound judgment in the advance-<lb />
ment of education.<lb />
Their efforts and the efforts of numerous<lb />
other foundations for East Carolina are provid-<lb />
ing aid to more students who may never have<lb />
had the opportunity of attending college. The<lb />
establishment of such scholarships also gives<lb />
incentives to those with ability and talent to<lb />
work harder in developing them.<lb />
We commend the Jaycees and the business<lb />
men and other organizations and individuals<lb />
who strive to install more opportunities for<lb />
present and potential college students.<lb />
What About Our Freshmen?<lb />
(From the Minnesota Daily, University of Minn-<lb />

This year's freshmen are a part of an age<lb />

eonstitutional concepts of human dignity and<lb />
freedom.<lb />
Proof of this comes in a poll Purdue Uni-<lb />

Fifty-eight per cent of the high school stu-<lb />

ci ie to talk or be severely punished.<lb />
'enty-five per cent would prohibit the<lb />

With hi suggestion as a filler, we<lb />
transferred it to this column.<lb />
It reads: There was once a girl,<lb />
who. when she was young, told every<lb />

that she did. This went on for many<lb />

The "East Carolinian" received the<lb />
following letter from a girl who<lb />
seemed very troubled:<lb />
Dear Sir,<lb />
I realize that you do not have a<lb />
Dorothy Dix column, hut I have a<lb />
question that I would like to have<lb />
answered. What is a rain check<lb />
Webster does not say.<lb />
A boy whom I would very much<lb />
like to date called and asked me<lb />
for a date. I had a test to study<lb />
for so I gave him a rain check. He<lb />
evidently did not know what I meant<lb />
and thought I was giving him the<lb />
brush-off. Maybe I have the wrong<lb />
conception.<lb />
I am sure that other people (girls)<lb />
have the same problem, so I wish<lb />
that if there was anything you could<lb />
do, you would. I am speaking for<lb />
several girls so I will not disclose<lb />
my name.<lb />
Very Earnestly.<lb />
Dear Very Earnestly,<lb />
In regard to your question "What<lb />
is a ram check" we have come to<lb />
the conclusion that there is no defi-<lb />
nite definition. The general idea,<lb />
however, is that it is a deferred<lb />
extension of hospitality or privilege.<lb />
In your letter you said you turned<lb />
down a date with the boy, but you<lb />
gave him a raincheck meaning that<lb />
you would accept at a later date.<lb />
Maybe the boy did not know what<lb />
you meant, but we can assure you<lb />
that if he was really interested he<lb />
would call again. We advise you and<lb />
your friends not to waste your time<lb />
on such boys. Get out and find some-<lb />

Dating, love and marriage are uni-<lb />
versal happenings, occuTing every<lb />
day. We are already fan-iliar with<lb />
the cycle on the cam-pus, but do A<lb />
wonder how our method compares<lb />
with the procedure elsewheresay<lb />
in Central America?<lb />
An enlightening conversation with<lb />
L. onore Padilla, student from Hon-<lb />
duras, reveals that lovers are just<lb />
as busy there as they are at East<lb />
Carolina.<lb />
The Honduras girl begins dating<lb />
at the age of 12 or 13 when she<lb />
enters college. She may date her<lb />
several boyfriends unchaperoned. The<lb />
couple do not betray any attraction<lb />
for one another through talk or<lb />
action, but relate their affection in<lb />
lengthy love letters. The college boy-<lb />
friends are never taken home to<lb />
meet parents of the girl. After grad-<lb />
uation, at the age of 1 the girl<lb />
may have a steady beau, who visits<lb />
her at her home as often as he wish-<lb />
es, if her parents approve of his<lb />
family background, education, pei-<lb />
sonal qualities and financial position.<lb />
When the parents are acquainted<lb />
with the boy, they do not chaperone<lb />
the couple, but if he is a stranger,<lb />
they "sit in" on the first few visits<lb />
to d terraine his purpose. If the boy<lb />
displays a desire to marry the girl<lb />
the parents leave the scene, but if<lb />
he shows other intent'ons. he is ask-<lb />
ed to leave. A girl in love will con-<lb />
tinue to see the object of her affec-<lb />
tions, even against her parents' will.<lb />
The boy must ask for the first<lb />
kiss, to which the maiden timidly<lb />
says no but the smart suitor real-<lb />

their mutual desire. The nice girl<lb />

October 31, according to Scotch<lb />
superstition, is the time when witch-<lb />
es, devils, fairies and other imps of<lb />
earth and lir hold an annual holiday.<lb />
Th refure, it is not unusual that<lb />
many superstitions have developed.<lb />
Have you ever wondered who your<lb />
life partner would be? No doubt you<lb />
have unless you have already taken<lb />
that march down the aisle. According<lb />
to old English belief, you can deter-<lb />
mine your mate if you jump over<lb />
lighted candles on Hallowe'en night.<lb />
Although this idea does seem quite<lb />
fantastic, you can never tell if it<lb />
will work unless you try. But how<lb />
can you tell who your mate would<lb />
be by this method? The firsrt of the<lb />
oppoite sex you meet afterwards?<lb />
If your birthday happens to fall<lb />
on October 31, you will be excused<lb />
if occasionally you seem to be mut-<lb />

I born on that date are supposed to<lb />
be able to converse with the super-<lb />

Regardless of the truth in these<lb />
superstitions, Hallowe'en has long<lb />

"Bege" says, "I've thought about<lb />

One night Flo and "Bege decided<lb />

They walked in, sat down, and started<lb />
reading some magazines. In a few<lb />
minutes a lady came in and asked if<lb />
they were looking for someone. They<lb />
told her, no, and went on reading.<lb />
When she kept standing there, they<lb />
looked up to see the most puzzled<lb />

America is fortunate in having news<lb />

This Week's Movie<lb />
by Faye O'Neal<lb />
This week's campus movie, "I Want<lb />
You falls into the category of<lb />
heant-tuggers and tear squeezers<lb />
that many American moviegoers love.<lb />
A story of the Korean War and<lb />
its effects on an average American<lb />
family, it is supposed to typify life<lb />
in the states during these so-called<lb />
trying times. Timely when produced,<lb />
the movie is not a great teacher,<lb />
but should be very enjoyable for one<lb />
who likes to have reality glazed with<lb />
sentimentality.<lb />
Playing opposites are Dana An-<lb />
drews and Dorothy McGuire, Robert<lb />
Keith and Mildred Dunnock, and<lb />
Farley Granger and Peggy Dow.<lb />
The movie will be shown tonight<lb />
at 7 o'clock in Austin auditorium.<lb />
Pot Pourri has been delving into the V<lb />
torian Era lately and is so overcome with<lb />
atmosphere of that period that she cinnot ref r.<lb />
from becoming real Victorian and in this char-<lb />
acter she will be allowed to do a bit of preoch<lb />
or moralizing. What would this column be mc<lb />
izing about this weekwhy an old standby to<lb />
the good student! Not having read or heard<lb />
the volumes of matter applying to the topic :<lb />
a good student, it is reported here from obi<lb />
vation only.<lb />
The fact is obvious that the ability to n<lb />
straight ones is really a small part of th.<lb />
a pupil must play in order to be included in<lb />
group of good student citizens. Such a person<lb />
follows directions. An easy enough task, we s<lb />
yet there are numbers of us who have to b<lb />
over and over again to fold our papers, not<lb />
write on the back of the papers and writ<lb />
complete sentences. All of us have little idi<lb />
crasies ond the professor is no exception. His<lb />
demands on us may seem unnecessary and fool-<lb />
ish but there is usually a good reason behir.<lb />
all. Directions given for tests and nightly assign-<lb />
ments do not vary, as a rule, and the good stu-<lb />
dent will comply to the instructor's rulings re-<lb />
specting them, therefore saving tempers and<lb />
cutting confusion.<lb />
Asking questions in class is an important<lb />
part of the work, but we wonder about the<lb />
dent who asks questions in a constant stream.<lb />
oftentimes asking what has just been answered'<lb />
Do some pupils do this to take up time, attract<lb />
attention or keep awake? Wouldn't it be a m re<lb />
profitable experience to act as a good student<lb />
and listen to the lecture and ask specific qu<lb />
tions which would add to the lesson?<lb />
Hesitate before going to sleep at your desk.<lb />
So the instructor's lesson is deathly boring and<lb />
ycu crawled in the night before during the<lb />
hours of the morning. None of us would Hk<lb />
have a student dozing in his chair while we are<lb />
delivering a lecture. There are ways to keep<lb />
awake, even if a stuJent has to resort to count-<lb />
ing the number of pauses the prof makes in one<lb />
sentence, it can be done. A good student will lis-<lb />
ten to the lecture and gain something from it no<lb />
matter how boring the hpur may be or how<lb />
sleepy he may become.<lb />
It must be remembered that the instructor<lb />
cannot possibly remember every detail of a per-<lb />
son's work. Oftentimes the prof will be asked to<lb />
recall J'that last sentence on the first page of<lb />
that recent test that was marked wrong" days<lb />
after the test was given. If there's a question<lb />
concerning a test or homework paper, wait until<lb />
after class and work it out then. An alert stu-<lb />
dent would never wait until weeks after the event<lb />
to raise questions about his work. Shall we say<lb />
that he would also certainly not expect the in-<lb />
structor to remember what type of ink he used-<lb />
Having delivered itself of this lengthy lec-<lb />
ture Pot Pourri will now shed its Victorian robe.<lb />

The BttCg scored again in the first<lb />

10 seconds left to play in the first<lb />
period King crossed the goal from<lb />
the three to score. His extra point<lb />
try was good and as the first quarter<lb />

There was no scoring in ihe second<lb />

trampl'd the Quakers' hopes of upset<lb />
deep into the cleat-iorn turf of Col-<lb />

Boone's charges raced for six touch-<lb />
downs during the sixty minutes of<lb />
play, the score was lessened by the<lb />
abundant use of substitutions.<lb />
The Guilford offense was played<lb />
to a standstill. The East Carolina<lb />
scrimmage line was well-nigh im-<lb />
penetrable as the Quakers tried in<lb />
vain to root the Pirate barrier of<lb />
oak. While the defenders were doing<lb />
their part the Buc backs were jack-<lb />
knifing through for hunks of yardage<lb />
that would choke an elephant.<lb />
When the final whistle blew it<lb />
meant the ball game, the sixth<lb />
straight win, and the North State<lb />
Conference crown.<lb />
What promises to be the keenest<lb />
competition on the locals' home sched-<lb />

night as the Mountaineers of Appa-<lb />

boasting their splendid halfiback-<lb />
quanterback Shirley Gabriel. The<lb />
high-stepping Gabriel has the scoring<lb />
touch and has put the double lines<lb />
behind him for 62 points, tops in<lb />
North State circles. The Mountaineers<lb />
will put all their eggs in one basket<lb />
as they count almost solely on Mr.<lb />
Gabriel to blow his horn.<lb />
This will be the last stand on tap<lb />

Herbst Tells Chapel Assembly<lb />
The eurtain may now be falling<lb />
on a dying world, or it may be ris-<lb />
ing on a new and better life for<lb />
mankind, Rabbi Solomon Herbst of<lb />
GoMaboro told East Carolina College<lb />
students Is a talk Tuesday.<lb />
A "compelling and unifying faith"<lb />
is needed, he said, if mankind is to<lb />
em erg-3 from the disillusionment and<lb />
disenchantment of our times and to<lb />
achieve "greater peace, security and<lb />
Wli beuig" in the future.<lb />
Rabbi Herbst appeared at the col-<lb />
lege throufeii arrangements with the<lb />
Jewish Cheutr. iqua Socity. He spoke<lb />
to nttximately 300 students and<lb />
faculty members attending the week-<lb />
ly chapel exercises in the Austin<lb />
auditorium. Dr. Carl V. Karris, di-<lb />
r otxr of religious activities at the<lb />
college, introduced him to the audi-<lb />
ence.<lb />
The industrial l volution, Rabbi<lb />
HeiOst stated, brought hopes that<lb />
increased leisure would result in a<lb />
superior culture; and scientific ad-<lb />
vancement led to the belief that<lb />
mnt and poverty would be removed.<lb />
But, he pointed out, the idea of<lb />
progress which characterized the last<lb />
century has yielded in our times to<lb />
disillusionment, desperation, disap-<lb />
pointment and disenchantment.<lb />
Today, he aid, "Conscience is at<lb />
a new low; it is hushed and silenced<lb />
in the confusion and turmoil of our<lb />
times The spirit of the age is<lb />
darkened, he continued, by a loss of<lb />
idealism.<lb />
Our age he said, "is tired and<lb />
afraid. No great idea is sweeping us<lb />
toward something better<lb />
"Democracy the eternal spring-<lb />
time of humanity he continued,<lb />
"is on the defensive; Communism,<lb />
on the offensive. We live in a world<lb />
:mr hate, intolerance and<lb />
bfeotry. Wai and the loss of freedom<lb />
