Educational Ideas Of Parents<lb />
.ate students at East<lb />
liege, working under the<lb />
t Director J. K. Long of<lb />
college education department, re-<lb />
asked some 300 parents to<lb />
i" on various topics of<lb />
eat in public school education.<lb />
I findings are revealed in an<lb />
, Dr. Long "When Parents<lb />

made the study as a "survey<lb />

terviews were used in obtaining in-<lb />
formation. The 300 parents whose<lb />
opinion -are Aimmariztad in Dt.<lb />
Long's account represent 17 counties<lb />
of the state.<lb />
The study reveals these opinions:<lb />
Parents believe elementary school<lb />
ils receive a satisfactory amount<lb />
of help and guidance from the teach-<lb />
er, but high school pupils do not;<lb />
Parents favor sex education in the<lb />
high school by a five to one ratio<lb />
and are almost unanimous in their<lb />
belief that the school should devote<lb />
a short period each day to religious<lb />
training;<lb />
The majority of parents believe<lb />
the school spends enough time in<lb />
teaching reading, writing and arith-<lb />
metic ;<lb />
There is a considerable difference<lb />
about homework, but more than half<lb />
the parents questioned believe the<lb />
school gives aibout the right amount.<lb />
The study show also that, though<lb />
parents express a strong interest in<lb />
knowing how their children are<lb />
taught, only four out of ten visit<lb />
the school to see pupils and teachers<lb />
at work.<lb />
A fairly large percent of parents,<lb />
according to Dr. Long's report of the<lb />
survey, do not know how member-<lb />
ship on the school board is obtained,<lb />
whether they would be welcomed at<lb />
board meetings, nor whether the<lb />
board works in harmony with teach-<lb />
ers and the community.<lb />

Scholastic Aid<lb />
Need At College<lb />
The generosity of the state in pro-<lb />
viding new buildings and an expand-<lb />
ed program for East Carolina Col-<lb />
lege should be matched by the people<lb />
if the area which it primarily serves,<lb />
Dr. T. C. Johnson, executive secre-<lb />
tary of foundations at the college,<lb />
told members of the Pactolus Ruri-<lb />
tan Clui'i Monday night of this week.<lb />
He pointed out that the state does<lb />
not provide funds with which the<lb />
college can give scholarships to de-<lb />
serving and needy young men and<lb />
young women and that the college<lb />
must depend upon private contribu-<lb />
tions for that purpose.<lb />
Dr. Johnson said that numerous<lb />
high school graduates are financially<lb />
unable to pay their own college ex-<lb />
penses and that often a very small<lb />
scholarship makes the difference be-<lb />
tween going or not going to college.<lb />
Failure to help these young people<lb />
is not only an injustice to them but<lb />
also to the world of tomorrow, which<lb />
will need, as no previous era has<lb />
needed them, well trained and capa-<lb />
ble baders, the speaker added.<lb />
Dr. Johnson spoke also of the<lb />
progress which North Carolina has<lb />
made in recent years, but he insisted<lb />
that continued progress is now im-<lb />
perative.<lb />

After The Ball Is Over<lb />
This years Homecoming is unquestionably<lb />
the finest East Carolina has ever had. One local<lb />
observer said it topped those of a university in<lb />
the state that he had attended.<lb />
In making this event a success the credit<lb />
is due to Charlie Kluttz, general student chair-<lb />
man, James W. Butler, general chairman of the<lb />
committees, and Bob Neil son, parade chairman.<lb />
And there are quite a number from the student<lb />
body who diligently worked on floats and decora-<lb />
tions to make Homecoming a colorful affair.<lb />
The long parade with its extravagant colors<lb />
and four band" providing festive music, all put<lb />
the onlookers "in the spirit" for the event. Each<lb />
floaj carried a meaningful theme, some serious<lb />
and" some on the llnt side.<lb />
A weekend full of events were offered to<lb />
Students and alumni, such as Friday night's pep<lb />
rally, snake dance, pep rally dance, bonfire;<lb />
Saturday's alumni meetings, luncheon, parade,<lb />
lumni tea, Victory Bell ceremonies, ball game<lb />

In response to last week's column<lb />

Dr. Coleman proclaimed that Com-<lb />

upon us Southerners to weaken our<lb />
resistance toward Communism.<lb />
If this was Sullivan's purpose,<lb />

long as we Southerners maintain<lb />
broad-mindedness along with our in-<lb />

Sylvia, who is majoring in home eco-<lb />
nomics, will graduate in May. A. J<lb />
who is planning to become a high<lb />
school coach, will be a senior next<lb />
year.<lb />
Sylvia and A. J. will celebrate<lb />
their fourth year of "going steady"<lb />
this coming February 14 (Valentine's<lb />
Day).<lb />
Their romance started when Sylvia<lb />
and a girl friend were reading in the<lb />
library one morning at Red Oak<lb />
High School. A. J. walked in and<lb />
started talking to them. It seems<lb />
Sylvia's girl friend had a crush on<lb />
A. J. So to help her, Sylvia, in the<lb />
course of the conversation, asked A.<lb />
J. if he had a ride to the basketball<lb />
tournament that night and suggested<lb />
that he ride with them. A. J. ac-<lb />
cepted, but things didn't work out<lb />
exactly as the girl friend had hoped.<lb />
Sylvia and A. J. ended up dating<lb />
and have been going steady ever<lb />
since. Sylvia says of A. J "He was<lb />
so bashful at first that I almost had<lb />
to ask for the dates<lb />
They like to watch ball games to-<lb />
gether. Of course, they can't sit to-<lb />
gether at baseball games because A.<lb />
J. pitches for the Pirates, but Sylvia<lb />
is right there rooting for him at all<lb />
the games.<lb />
"We had a lot of fun fishing this<lb />
summer says Sylvia, "but I don't<lb />
know if we'll go anymore or not.<lb />
The last time we went A. J. lost his<lb />
watch<lb />
(Editor's note: By being chosen<lb />
"Couple of the Week Sylvia and<lb />
A. J. will each be given a meal at i<lb />
the Olde Towne Inn, a ticket to the<lb />
Pitt Theatre, a gift from Saslow's<lb />
Jewelers and a carton of Chesterfield<lb />
cigarettes.)<lb />
To the Editor:<lb />
Why can't our college students<lb />
think and talk on a higher level?<lb />
I personally think that it is a shame<lb />
that a up and comeing college can't<lb />
have at least one coultuerel club on<lb />
campus. Practcally every other col-<lb />
lage and university in the nation<lb />
has a club of this type.<lb />
The awful truth is that on our<lb />
campus there is absolutely no inter-<lb />
est in the finer things of life. We<lb />
have our "bull sessons" on Mickey<lb />
Spelain and Stan Kenton, but to sug-<lb />
gest talking about Homer or playing<lb />
something by the Boston Pops would<lb />
be laughed at.<lb />
Don't get me wrong, I love the<lb />
same things you do: sex, sports, and<lb />
beer. But I also appreciate Wagner<lb />
and Vergil.<lb />
It has worried me since I was a<lb />
freshman that no one was interested<lb />
in them while at other colliges I<lb />
have heard the merits of authors or<lb />
politicans discussed for hours.<lb />
I have talked to several of the<lb />
faculty about this and they don't<lb />
seem to be able to pinpoint the<lb />
trouble, but they all agree that there<lb />
is definately something wrong. It<lb />
seems a shame to think of a graduate<lb />
uf BQC being forced to admit that<lb />
he dousn't know anything about the<lb />
classics whether they be music or<lb />
literary. And that allthough he has<lb />
been graduated from the forth big-<lb />
gest college in the state that he has<lb />
never worn eathcr a tux or a dinner<lb />
jacket.<lb />
A suggestion that I have are that<lb />
one: The Jr. Seanor dance should<lb />
be formal. Most of the larger high<lb />
school jr. seanors are formal and<lb />
why should they out do our college<lb />
two; that the students on campus<lb />
should attend some of the classical<lb />
intertainments given on campus and<lb />
learn to enjoy them, three: that<lb />
more emphis be put on coulture and<lb />
ethics I y the facilty.<lb />
Just remember beer is fine but<lb />
champain is better.<lb />
A Junior<lb />
(Another Note from the Edi-<lb />
tor: If you want intellectual bull<lb />
sessions on campus, why don't<lb />
you start the ball rolling for<lb />
your purpose. After all, action<lb />
speaks louder than words.<lb />

Its October the ninth, about supper<lb />

The weekend is shaping up just fine.<lb />
Your humor is good, your date has<lb />
the same affects<lb />
Ain't it surprising the Homecoming<lb />
effects?<lb />
You go to the pep-rally, you knew<lb />
you would<lb />
You yell like h, as a Pirate should<lb />
Then in a mad whirl the snake dance<lb />
begins.<lb />
You go along with it, 'till the very<lb />
end.<lb />
You're still living though you ache<lb />

Now to another dance, and the bop<lb />
you will do<lb />
You're feeling no pain by the time<lb />
you hit bed<lb />

head<lb />
Saturday morning you leave, your<lb />
date you'll get,<lb />
Just as you thought, she's not ready-<lb />
yet.<lb />
Finally she's ready, an hour tardy.<lb />
It's off to the parade and then to a<lb />
party.<lb />
That night it's the game . . . and<lb />
ECC won!<lb />
Some spectators had a little too much<lb />
fun.<lb />
As flour sacks they carried them<lb />
away!<lb />
They saw very little of the game<lb />
anyway!<lb />
The band came forth in beautiful<lb />
array.<lb />
To add to the half-time display.<lb />
The queen and her court had a dom-<lb />
inate spot.<lb />
In a heart made up of little red dots.<lb />
From the looks of things at the library it<lb />
appears that the notice that "flunk slips"<lb />
soon be on the way is having an effect. Fr<lb />
7-9 p.m. each evening it's virtually impossibh<lb />
to get a seat in the library although it must b<lb />
admitted that a large percentage of the student-<lb />
go there for recreation purposes only.<lb />
East Carolina will indeed be a fortunj<lb />
school when the Joyner Library is completed .<lb />
the larger facilities are in use. Let's hope then<lb />
that until the new library is in operation, the<lb />
student body will put up with the overcrowd<lb />
conditions.<lb />

Football! That all-Ameriean word that de-<lb />
notes snappy weather, yelling crowds, bright<lb />
cjlors and a general feeling of excitement. How<lb />
did football really begin?<lb />
It was back in the spring of 1875May, to<lb />
be exactwhen the trees were in bloom and the<lb />
flowers were budding, that real American foot-<lb />
ball actually began. The general impression is<lb />
that the first American collegiate football game<lb />
was played in 1869, between Rutgers and Prince-<lb />
ton. That fact is correct except for one thing.<lb />
The game these two teams played was "rugby<lb />
or a form of soccer. It consisted entirely of kick-<lb />
ing the ball (or kicking the opponents' shins).<lb />
Running, passing and blocking really had its<lb />
beginning in 1875, between Harvard and McGill<lb />
University of Canada.<lb />
The McGill team came out on the field and<lb />
started to practice. Harvard waiched and re-<lb />
ceived quite a surprise when McGill not only<lb />
kicked the ball, but they would hold it and run<lb />
with it! That wasn't the way Harvard played<lb />
and the Harvard captain brought this point up.<lb />
The McGill captain was just as surprised, be-<lb />
cause the Canadian game included running a<lb />
well as kicking. The two captains decided that<lb />
the fairest thing to do would be to play both<lb />
ways, the first half would be played according<lb />
to McGill's style; the second half according tu<lb />
Harvard's style.<lb />
So the game started. McGill had the b<lb />
of it in the first half, but the game was more<lb />
exciting and much more interesting than the<lb />
straight kicking game. In fact, Harvard liked it<lb />
so much that they played the second half accoid-<lb />
ing to those rules, too. Though Harvard lost th<lb />
game, it gained a new type of play which was<lb />
destined to make history. In the next year, Har-<lb />
vard used its influence to get some other Amen<lb />
can colleges to play the game of "football" this<lb />
new way, and its popularity increased until it<lb />
became the standard form of play.<lb />
If some people think football is confusing<lb />
today, they should have seen the game when in<lb />
its infancy. First, there were 15 players on each<lb />
side. There were nine linesmen, two halfbacks<lb />
one quarterback, one threequarterback, and tw<lb />
fullbacks. If this wasn't bad enough, the tw<lb />
teams were practically in each other's hair<lb />
the time. It wasn't until 1903 that the two teams<lb />
were separated by the "neutral" zone, so day<lb />
light could be seen between the teams.<lb />
Through the years the players were num-<lb />
bered, the cheering section came into being, the<lb />
forward pass developed and football became big<lb />
business.<lb />

Elon Scores First<lb />
Elon opened the game's scoring<lb />
early in the first period when full-<lb />
back Revell Morrison sliced across<lb />
from the one yard line after pass<lb />
interference had been ruled against<lb />
the Bucs. Six plays and 59 yards<lb />
later the locals, led by Jim Stanley<lb />
and a pass from Cherry to Hodges,<lb />
knotted the score when fullback<lb />
Claude King plunged into the end<lb />
zone from eight yards out. King<lb />
kicked the point and the Pirates had<lb />
the lead for keeps despite a second<lb />
half Christian rally.<lb />
Mid-way in the opening period the<lb />
Bucs tallied again when Boyd Webb,<lb />
ubbing for Cherry, snatched an Elon<lb />
punt on the 50 yard stripe and dashed<lb />
down the sideline behind perfect<lb />
blocking for the score. King again<lb />
converted.<lb />
The locals added their third first<lb />
half tally mid-way in the second<lb />
session on a four yard sneak by<lb />
Cherry. King's kick was good again<lb />
to give the Pirates a 21-6 halftime<lb />
advantage.<lb />
Christians Rally<lb />
Immediately following the second<lb />
half kickoff the Pirates drove 68<lb />
yards for their fourth tally with<lb />
Cherry sneaking over from the one.<lb />
The Christians, however, matched<lb />
the TD when John Platt smashed<lb />
over to end a 75 yard march. The<lb />
two teams traded TD's again as<lb />
Cherry passed to Hodges for six more<lb />
points and the Christians' Revell<lb />
Morrison collected his second tally<lb />
of the evening from 12 yards out.<lb />
The score at the end of the third<lb />
eriod read East Carolina 33, Elon<lb />
19.<lb />
A razzle-dazzle pass play from<lb />
quarterback Bill Snyder to Morrison<lb />
gave the Christians their fourth<lb />
marker soon after the final period<lb />
opened cut Cherry came back to toss<lb />
a second scoring pass to Bobby<lb />
Hodges. With less than four minutes<lb />
to play in the contest Jim Stanley,<lb />
an offensive standout all evening,<lb />
circled his own left end for the<lb />
game's final marker.<lb />
The Pirate victory was the third<lb />
straight for the locals in conference<lb />
play and gave them an overall mark<lb />
of four wins against no defeats.<lb />
Shady pass defense hurt the Bucs<lb />
but the foreward wall led by Willie<lb />
Holland, Larry Rhodes, Dave Lee,<lb />
Algie Faii-cloth and Louis Hallow<lb />
held the ground game in check.<lb />

for the 1953-54 season. Coach Howard<lb />

lettermen returning from last year's<lb />

bhe Pirates suffered is the absence<lb />
of last year's stalwartAll-Confer-<lb />

The returning lettermen are Bobby<lb />

According to Coach Porter, the<lb />
team appears to be shaping up pret-<lb />
ty well although he doesn't expect<lb />
them to repeat the feats of last year's<lb />
team, which compiled the best record<lb />
of any squad in East Carolina his-<lb />

ment in Kansas. Coach Porter also<lb />
commented that the returning letter<lb />
men are showing up better than he<lb />
had anticipated and that he hoped<lb />
tihey would continue to please him.<lb />
When asked how he would com-<lb />

could play six men, if we could; but<lb />
since we can't we'll just have to wait<lb />

also remarked that he had no hopes<lb />
to retain the North State title this-<lb />

would be nice He said that he<lb />

would be improved over their teams<lb />

last Saturday night with alumni<lb />

It is very evident now after four<lb />

Mrs. Moore Swims. Tours Europe Alone. Rides Camel<lb />
Age 63, She Goes To School<lb />
Alumni News<lb />
by Faye O'Neal<lb />
When Mrs. Rachael Maxwell j to go alone as she did then, she<lb />
Moore, a 63-year-old Greenville resi- pian? to do a good deal more travel-<lb />
dent, decided to take a few courses<lb />
in French and Spanish at East Car-<lb />
olina, little did sh realize that she<lb />
would be a living answer to a much<lb />
pondered health exam question,<lb />
"What i5 the answer to senescence?"<lb />
She only aimed at leanin enough<lb />
French and Spanish to find herself<lb />
if she gut lost on one of her trips<lb />
out of the United States as a tourist.<lb />
The story of how Mrs. Moore has<lb />
conquered the eccentricities of old<lb />
ag, and charmed her many friends<lb />
and acquaintances is one of an in-<lb />
teresting ami useful life.<lb />
Mrs. Moore isn't really old, how-<lb />
evt. A.S she -ill gayly retort to any<lb />
query on her ape, "I don't feel old.<lb />
I'vt- only been here 63 years<lb />
She is one of the oldest students<lb />
to attend East Carolina College, but<lb />
everyone vho kx wa tht lady feels<lb />
at her uniqueness lies not in her<lb />
age, but in her happy, useful nature.<lb />
Travels in Ei'rope<lb />
rhia lady has always been active.<lb />
She was a .school teacher in Wayne<lb />
County as a young woman. She<lb />
taught math and history and in<lb />
becoming geographically familiar<lb />
with the lamls "of the blue medi-<lb />
terranean" in her work, lUrs. Moore<lb />
loped a r.am of someday trav-<lb />
eling to see these places where so<lb />
much of the math and history of the<lb />
world originated.<lb />
This sumn. she had this girlhood<lb />

JOHNSON'S<lb />
FOR THE BEST IN MUSIC<lb />
At Five Points<lb />
ing before her life is through<lb />
A red-head with singing blue eyes<lb />
and effervescent laughter, Mrs.<lb />
Moore made herself known and re-<lb />
spected in Greenville many years ago,<lb />
long before the time she decided to<lb />
enter East Carolina as a special<lb />
studitu.<lb />
The wife of a late real estate ex-<lb />
ecutive, Mrs. Moore has led a full<lb />
life of service to her community and<lb />
tat She had no children to take<lb />
her time and she accepted completely<lb />
the responsibility of a true citizen.<lb />
Especially since she has been left<lb />
with no family ties in town, has<lb />
Mrs. Moore enjoyed a reign of public<lb />
commission and received the happy<lb />
dividends of a life of utility. The<lb />
Red Cross the Woman's Club and<lb />
the local organizations which promote<lb />
art are the types of unselfish work<lb />
she does.<lb />
"I tay busy all the time Mrs.<lb />
Moore declares. "I support myself<lb />
through real estate and rentals; I<lb />
even drive to do my own collecting<lb />
Many an average person over 50<lb />
would draw a finishing line here but<lb />
not this modern "bonne femme She<lb />
perhaps works too much, she grudg-<lb />
' igly admits when she tells of her<lb />
many public activities, her trips, her<lb />
social life and her student life here<lb />
with us.<lb />
Mechanical Pets<lb />
With all her time-filling duties,<lb />
Mrs. Moore has several intriguing<lb />
hobbies. Among them is her liking<lb />
for pets. She has no animals, how-<lb />
ever. Hers are mechanical friends.<lb />
She will gladly show you her sing-<lb />
ing bird, her "cuckoo clock" and an<lb />
alarm clock that wakes her up and<lb />
while she dances about her initial<lb />
tasks every morning. Mrs. Moore<lb />
has quite a collection of "music<lb />
boxes" and also many, many fig-<lb />
urines, ash trays and the like which<lb />
she has .picked up on her trips in<lb />
foreign countries.<lb />
She was in Europe and Atfrica this<lb />
past summer 'and has several sou-<lb />
venirs of the coronation of Queen<lb />
Elizabeth in England among the<lb />
memories of her trip.<lb />
Mows Lawn<lb />
Another hobby that is surprising<lb />
among women so busy as Mrs. Moore<lb />
is diligent work in her yard and<lb />
flower garden. Just 63 years old and<lb />
she mows her own lawn! Flowers<lb />
and well-shaped shrulHbery decorate<lb />
her yard at 1600 East Fifth Street<lb />
all year 'round. Her beautiful dah-<lb />
lias, tangerine in color, catch an<lb />
envious eye from all the florists in<lb />
town during this season.<lb />
All these accomplishments seem<lb />
ample proof that Mrs. Rachael<lb />
Moore has not let anything impor-<lb />
tant pass untampered with. But her<lb />
most humorous, life-loving accom-<lb />
plishments are yet to be revealed.<lb />
Takes Swimming<lb />
Gesturing gaily, her brightly lac-<lb />
quered nails helping to emphasize her<lb />
obvious enthusiasm, Mrs. Moore told<lb />
this reporter that she is taking swim-<lb />
ming lessons. She's improving every<lb />
day, according to her instructor.<lb />
Mrs. Moore has no desire to swim<lb />
the English Channel, however.<lb />
Also Mrs. Moore rode a camel's<lb />
back in Africa this summer. And<lb />
chances are, she didn't complain<lb />
about aching joints afterward, either.<lb />
Mrs. Moore Hves alone, much to<lb />
the chagrin of her family. She stays<lb />
too busy to "fade away" in solitude<lb />
as she has proved. Certainly she is<lb />
