Mr. Stoner attended the public<lb />
schools in Pennsylvania at Point<lb />
Marion. He graduated from Bethany<lb />
college, Bethany, West Va in 1941<lb />
with a B.S. degree. From there he<lb />
went to Yale university where he<lb />
received his B-D. degree in 1944. He<lb />
is an ordained minister of the Dis-<lb />
James Lloyd Stoner<lb />
copies of Christ, and has contributed<lb />
articles to several magazines and pe-<lb />
riodicals.<lb />
Associate Minister<lb />
Mr. Stoner was the associate min-<lb />
ister in 1942 at the Church of Christ<lb />
in Spring Glen, Hamden, Conn and<lb />
in 1943 became minister there. In<lb />
1944 he became associate secretary<lb />
of the University of Texas YMCA<lb />
at Austin He was the first director<lb />
of the Student Christian fellowship<lb />
at Bowling Green State university,<lb />
a pioneer interdenominational work<lb />
among students started in 1945. At<lb />
the present time it serves eight de-<lb />
nominations and the student YMCA<lb />
and YWCA. Since 1947 Mr. Stoner<lb />
has been director of the University<lb />
Christian Mission.<lb />
In 1943 Mr. Stoner married Janice<lb />
Evans. During the summer of 1951<lb />
they traveled in ten countries in Eu-<lb />
rope visiting church leaders, student<lb />
Christian Movement leaders, the<lb />
World Council of Churches and the<lb />
World Student Christian Federation<lb />
headquarters.<lb />
Program Important<lb />
Mr. Stoner feels that the inter-<lb />
denominational program of the Uni-<lb />
versity Christian Mission is very im-<lb />
portant for strengthening the spirit-<lb />
ual life of students and faculty<lb />
members. "We are interested in help-<lb />
ing students and faculty members<lb />
discover the fullness of life which<lb />
comes in knowing Jesus Christ he<lb />
says.<lb />
He feels that religion is a vital<lb />
part of the educational process: "Ed-<lb />
ucation is more than the communica-<lb />
tion of knowledge or the cultivation<lb />
of intellect. It should inspire and<lb />
give a sense of values. It should teach<lb />
one to live creatively and wholesome-<lb />
ly. Education must help young people<lb />
distinguish between what is first-<lb />
rate and what is not. The student<lb />
who emerges from college without<lb />
a more complete view of the universe<lb />
and a Christian philosophy which en-<lb />
ables him to meet problems, disap-<lb />
pointments and opportunities, is an<lb />
'educated dwarf The 'whole man' is<lb />
one who understands the relevance<lb />
of religion in all areas of personal<lb />
and social living experience<lb />

' y Lt. Col. Roger C. Fuller, profes-<lb />

Col. Fuller spoke to a class in<lb />
History of the Far East taught by<lb />
Dr. Lawrence F. Brewster of the so-<lb />

recent tour of duty in Japan, and<lb />
illustrated his remarks with color<lb />
slides depicting the country and the<lb />
life of the people.<lb />
Col. Fuller laid emphasis on the<lb />
skills and the industriousness of the<lb />
Japanese. He noted also the many<lb />
expressions of gratitude to America<lb />
for the assistance rendered by this<lb />
country toward the postwar recovery<lb />

rector Arthur ,1'osoy.<lb />
"A Sunny Morning a modern<lb />
Spanish play, is the best known of<lb />
all the plays of the Quinteros. It<lb />
concerns an aged couple who, years<lb />
before, had been in love. It is a de-<lb />
lightful mixture of sentiment and<lb />
wit. Donna Laura is portrayed by<lb />
Jacqueline Phalemnin, Don Gorralo<lb />
by Horace G. King. Petra by Dixie<lb />
C. Grady, and Juanito by John D.<lb />
Cannon.<lb />
"The Valiant" is the story of a<lb />
middle-aged man who is being held<lb />
prisoner for murder. For this crime<lb />
he has no feeling of guilt. It relates<lb />
the story of a man who feels com-<lb />
pletely justified in commiting mur-<lb />
der. At the last incident before the<lb />
death penalty the prisoner is visited<lb />
y a young girl, who believes him<lb />
to be her long lost brother. The fact<lb />
of whether a man who is condemned<lb />
to die could possibly be her brother,<lb />
creates an emotional dramatic cli-<lb />
max in "The Valiant The cast for<lb />
the play is: the girl by Jo Ann Lee,<lb />
the prisons by Doug Mitchell, Fa-<lb />

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER<lb />
U<lb />
Pecking Away Sports Medlies<lb />
by Bruce<lb />
The Buccaneers, back from the <lb />
"Sunshine state" after dulling some<lb />
of the Homecoming luster of the<lb />
Stetson university Hatters, merit the<lb />
commendations of the entire student<lb />
body for their outstanding perform-<lb />
ance against the much larger school<lb />
from the heart of America's vaca-<lb />
tion land.<lb />
Before the contest East Carolina's<lb />
familiarity was very obscure in De-<lb />
land, and one could stroll down any<lb />
avenue and inquire to any one of<lb />
their Sol-tanned citizens, "Have you<lb />
ever beard of East Carolina college?"<lb />
e reply most likely would have<lb />
sounded something like "You've got<lb />
me, Mac. But 1 Relieve it's some-<lb />
where in the Carolinas Now if<lb />
you'd made this same interrogation<lb />
after the EC-vibrated week end the<lb />
answer most surely would have been,<lb />
Never has our fair city been hit by<lb />
a more impressive football aggrega-<lb />
tion and its suppor'ers than this<lb />
inch from Greenville, North Caro-<lb />
lina<lb />
There were 70-odd EC students<lb />
and parents attending the game. The<lb />
small group, huddled and in unison,<lb />
exuberated an astounding amount of<lb />
Phillips<lb />
noise to rate sidelighting stories in<lb />
two of Florida's newspapers. The<lb />
little, but loud cluster of Buccaneer<lb />
backers ahnosrt; drowned out the<lb />
6,000 Homecoming-celebrating Hat-<lb />
ters. The clamoring, uproarious Pi-<lb />
rate crew really represented the less<lb />
fortunate ones who were unable to<lb />
make the trip.<lb />
Decorated with the traditional<lb />
black and white Pirate banners and<lb />
school buttons the rooters gathered<lb />
on the lawn of the Putman hotel,<lb />
where the team was staying, and<lb />
touched off a dazzling pep rally, led<lb />
the footballers to the stadium at-<lb />
tracting more attention with their<lb />
diminutive group than Stetson could<lb />
muster with all their huge throngs.<lb />
There hasn't been such school spirit<lb />
and devotion shown since Carolina<lb />
went to Times Square.<lb />
Four of Florida's biggest news-<lb />
papers carried headline stories of<lb />
the game with over a dozen action<lb />
pictures appearing o print. Doubt-<lb />
less to say, East Carolina gained<lb />
prestige from the 19-19 knot, and<lb />
the boys truly deserved such a trip<lb />
in payment for their sweat and toil<lb />
on the gridiron.<lb />

As this issue of "East Carolinian"<lb />
goes to press, Gloria Ann Whitehurst<lb />
of Bethel is being numbered among<lb />
the alumni of East Carolina college.<lb />
Ann says that she is spending her<lb />
most pleasant quarter yet, and she<lb />
gives a very good reason. ery en-<lb />
thusiastic primary major, she is a<lb />
student teacher in Miss Eunice Mc-<lb />
Gee's third grade. "I hav enjoyed<lb />
the quarter immensely she beams.<lb />
"Just being the children during play<lb />

to choose any particular phase of her<lb />
work with the third grade as her<lb />
favorite, she is sure that teaching<lb />
students music has been her great-<lb />

There is a reason why Miss White-<lb />

She came here with every intention<lb />

she learned that she couldn't do tha<lb />

In many our home towns a church service<lb />

We should be thankful for the right to at-<lb />

when a free people loses these intangible bless-<lb />

It is always fun to know about tfc<lb />
little incidents and other things of<lb />
interest that occurred before most of<lb />
us were quite old enough to remem-<lb />
ber. Several days ago we were glan-<lb />
cing through the old files ot TECO<lb />
ECHO printed in 1932. A few of the<lb />
amusing and informative articles<lb />
caught our eye and we would like<lb />
to pass them on to you.<lb />
First as we know, this was the<lb />
time of the depression and prices<lb />
were low. It was quite amusing to<lb />
see clothes advertised as: Women's<lb />
linen suits, $2.98; women's brown<lb />
alligator shoes, $4.95; silk hose. 98c;<lb />
and mesh hose, 10c.<lb />
Speaking of the depression, there<lb />
was a small item at the bottom of<lb />
one page saying: "Yes, the story of<lb />
the depression is very famiiinr to us<lb />
all now, but here is a word you may<lb />
not have heard. The depression must<lb />
be over, for the girls at BCTC had<lb />
ice cream for supper Sunday night,<lb />
and that is indeed a rarity Now<lb />
students, when we compknn about<lb />
the dining hall not having enough<lb />
Carpenter<lb />
in line, just remember that at least<lb />
we have ice cream.<lb />
This is about the time of the year<lb />
that most men drag out their guns,<lb />
clean them, and prepare for anotheT<lb />
season of hunting, which is just<lb />
"Clean-up week" has come and g<lb />
that's no reason to discontinue our<lb />
beautify our campus. When 2,000-odd<lb />
get to roaming around a confined area<lb />
bound to be a lot of odd trash flung to the<lb />
but just the same, with the school pri<lb />
obvious here, lefs try to be a little mor<lb />
around the corner. This reminds us<lb />
of an article on one of the faculty<lb />
here at East Carolina. Miss Kuyken-<lb />
dall, who tried her luck at duck hunt-<lb />
ing in Kentucky, aimed at a duck<lb />
and killed a fourpound fish. Don't<lb />
feel too badly, Miss Kuykendall, at<lb />
least you hit something, even if it<lb />
was fish and not fowl. Most of us<lb />
women can't even do that.<lb />
How many of us know how East<lb />
Carolina obtained the beautiful foun-<lb />
tain and circle in front of Wright<lb />
auditorium? It was presented to the<lb />
school as the class gift of the grad-<lb />
uating class of 1932.<lb />
Everyone is taking chances every-<lb />
day of his life. We take a chance<lb />
riding in a car, we take a chance<lb />
crossing the street, and in fact, we<lb />
take a chance in everything we do.<lb />
Let's have a cheerful attitude about<lb />
it, though, as this poem will relate<lb />

With pre-registration recently com-<lb />

close a word regarding the general<lb />

the courses to be offered for an en-<lb />

each student prior to registration,<lb />

Some trustees at the University of<lb />
North Carolina are advocating that<lb />
the institution should return to a<lb />
9ix-day week schedule. The students<lb />
of one accord have risen to oppose<lb />
such a change and rightly so. The<lb />
mental strain of such a schedule<lb />
imposes 1 ardship.<lb />
The chief objection to the present<lb />
schedule stems from the fact that<lb />
many students ieave the campus on<lb />
week-ends. The dbjectors seem to<lb />
think that these week-end sojourns<lb />
are reflected in the quality of the<lb />

A recent health checkup showed that s<lb />

from the standpoint of good health.<lb />
It's safer for the man if the girl wear- <lb />

the lingering kind. Almost all the germs tl<lb />
transferred by a kiss are the type thai<lb />
cause sickness. These are the findings repol<lb />

A special tribute was paid to the ma<lb />

Recent smoking seemed to lower the 1<lb />

than moist. The effect of alcoholic drinks<lb />
a kiss was inconclusive. Beer appeared to r<lb />
the germ count, hard liquor to lower it.<lb />
Bad breath was accompanied by high g<lb />
counts. There is a real threat of a kiss of d<lb />
if the kissed partner has dipththeria. acute<lb />

Sandy, hailing from Siler City,<lb />

woeful remains of the West Virginia<lb />
football plant. The explosion occurred<lb />
between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday<lb />
night, November 14. The devastation<lb />
lasted for sixty minuWs and culmi-<lb />
nated only after the official in the<lb />

on his whistle.<lb />
The immediate damages were esti-<lb />
mated at 34" sections completely<lb />
demolished with only "7" fragments<lb />
from the blow saved by the West<lb />
Virginians. The cause was thought<lb />
to have beeen the results of a "Her-<lb />

had to be released; the potency was<lb />
known to be there, and it was only<lb />
a matter of time until the explosion<lb />
was destined to discharge. Sorry, it<lb />
had to be West Virginia Tech, but<lb />
it just goes to show you that you<lb />
