Need foi a more democratic student government constitution to j<lb />
,mv! the demands of a growing co educational institution has been j<lb />
apparent for some time, and it was so expressed by the students <lb />
In mass meeting assembled last spring. At that time a committee<lb />
was appointed to work on the revision of the present constitution.<lb />
ln une, however, thev were not read to present the efforts of<lb />
their work to the students for approval. Work was discontinued<lb />

had graduated. A new committee, therefore, had to take over and<lb />
start anew<lb />

occur a second tune. An entirely new committee will probably<lb />
have I i ike over next fall and experience the same trials and<lb />
tribulations as the last two committees have had. No doubt they<lb />
will make mam of the same mistakes.<lb />
We realize it is undoubtedly too late for the same committee to<lb />
do anything aliout it before June now. and we don't advocate tak-<lb />
ing anv dWic steps in adopting a constitution that wall be no<lb />
better than the one that is now in operation, but we do think that<lb />
something should he done.<lb />
We suggest that a new committee composed only of students<lb />
who will on the campus next year be appointed immediately<lb />
and that thev meet with the old committee, let them point out what<lb />
thev have done the mistakes made and otter any advice they can.<lb />
With this help the new committee can take up the work where it<lb />
was left off tins spring and continue with it next fall. Then the<lb />
work of revising the constitution can he carried on so that it will<lb />
meet the approval and needs of the student body and go into effect<lb />
with the beginning of the election of officers tor 1941-4$.<lb />

MIX-UP -High Point College was supposed to plav a tennis match<lb />
ami baseball game here a few weeks ago but failed to show up The<lb />
tennis team was ready and Coach Farley's baseballers were ready, but<lb />
when game time arrived, there was no opposition. As a result, fans were<lb />
disappointed and the games must be postponed until a later date. Thus<lb />
far, no explanation has been offered by the guilty opponents, but it<lb />
seems that a bit of confirmation of scheduled games before game<lb />
time would prevent such incidents occurring.<lb />
JIVERSLocal athletes must have their diversion during their<lb />
leisure seasons, and many of them take to the gym to get their exercise.<lb />
Every evening between the hours of i() and 7:30 such stars as Bill<lb />
Davidson, "Dopey" Watson, Joe Williams, and others may be found<lb />
building up their muscles to the tune of some swingy melody. The bovs<lb />
show much agility and dexterity and even Fred Asta'ire might look upon<lb />
them with envy.<lb />
SHOESOne of the most interesting events of the intramural pro-<lb />
gram is the annual Horseshoe tournament. This vear. the tournament<lb />
should prove even more interesting because of an abundance of new-<lb />
talent on our campus. Freshmen Sammy Crandall. Malcolm Frenek. and<lb />
dames Thomas are reputed to hold championships in their respective<lb />
home towns. Such veteran pitchers as Tom Cox and John Williams will<lb />
lie back on the scene to offer competition to the newcomers. Frenek. who<lb />
hails from Southport, is favored to oust all other competitors in this<lb />
sport thriller.<lb />
NORMAN Xrman Mayo, who sprained his ankle in a recent baseball<lb />
game states that he is ready to hold down third base again. Norman has<lb />
')) going fr long walks in order to build up his injured member and to<lb />
those who have seen Norman, we don't have to tell you that he hasn't<lb />
been walking alone.<lb />
BREECEProbably the most improved member of the Pirate tennis<lb />
squad is David Breeee. At the beginning of the season. David was inex-<lb />
perienced and unpolished. However, he has worked hard at his game<lb />
ami now he is one of the best on the squad. Few students know the actual<lb />
rankings of the tennis n layers, so here they are as they stand to date:<lb />
1. Jimmy Dempsey. 2. Doug Glo'Cr, 3. Herbert Wilkerson. 4. Charley<lb />
Harris. 5. David Breeee, 6. Leon Meadows. These rankings are subject<lb />
to change at any time and it is a good bet that Breeee wil rise from his<lb />
No. 5 spot as the season progresses.<lb />
INTRAMURALSThis year the college has planned the largest<lb />
intramural program ever held at ECTC. The variety of events includes:<lb />
Softball, tennis, pingpong, horseshoes, and a track meet. These events<lb />
are open to girls as well as boys, and should be of interest to every<lb />
student. In the past not much emphasis has been placed on intramural<lb />
activities at this school due to the laxity of the students. However, this<lb />
year, the intramural head lias expressed his wish that each student take<lb />
par? in some event. It is not compulsory, but the program should be sup-<lb />
ported fej the students with more interest than has been shown in the<lb />
years gone Y when our college lacked any form of intramural athletics,<lb />
BASEBALLThp Pirate-Oak Ridge game showed that Coach Far-<lb />
ley's team has almost reaped its peak. Bill Shelton played a swell defen-<lb />
sive game at short stop and ik&Py Martin performed in fine style on the<lb />
mound. It was a cold day but the Pirates were too hot for the boys from<lb />
Oak Ridge. While the batting attack wasn't up to par, the boys showed<lb />
enough power to push over the three runs nessary for victory. Kelly<lb />
Martin s triple was the big blow of the game thai decided the victory.<lb />
TENNIS COURTSThe re-salvaging of various te7Miis courts scat-<lb />
tered about our campus is almost completed and when the last net has<lb />
been fixed, ECTC will have a total of six tennis courts. Two of these<lb />
courts are in good condition, by that I mean that they can be played on<lb />
if one is careful of ruts and holes and watches the ball as it angles crazily<lb />
, out of some small depression. Of course, to be able to enjoy the privilege<lb />
of playing tennis, one must wait for several hours before taking to the<lb />
courts. All in all, the courts are O.K but there is one small hindrance<lb />
that has been overlooked, and that is holding classes on the courts. These<lb />
I classes begin at two-thirty every day, at the height of tennis time. At<lb />
I this time, the amateurs, the tennis team, and other players are told, not<lb />
; asked, to clear the courts. If our college had its quota of courts, there<lb />
would be no objection to having classes on the courts, but since it doesn't,<lb />
it seems only natural that the classes should be discontinued. Another<lb />
j thing, why doesn't the college give the tennis team the courts for two<lb />
! hours every day! If the remainder of the student body had free access<lb />
j to the courts every day up until four o'clock, then the students would<lb />
gladly relinquish the courts to the tennis team for the remainder of the<lb />
afternoon. i lfty<lb />
INTRAMURAL BASEBALLThe rain last week cancelled all intra-<lb />
mural baseball contests but the boys are ready to go when better weather<lb />
comes. Each club boasts of pennant winning teams but from here, it<lb />
looks as though the Jitterbugs will outclass the Swingsters, the Deans<lb />
of Rhythm, and of course, the Skunks (Dudash and Brock, Inc.).<lb />
Visitors on High School Dav eouldi<lb />
couldn't afford to stay away from the athletic field as Coach Bo Farley's<lb />
Pirates trounced the Bulldogs of Atlantic Christian College &-2 before a receptive crowd. From the fit-r pitch<lb />
until the last, interest in the game never dwindled. There was a large delegation here from Atlantic '<lb />
