Every room was canvassed by<lb />
students in the various dormi<lb />

The prospect of a good time<lb />
will get almost anybody out of<lb />
a sick bed.<lb />
Let's accept restrictions cheer-<lb />
fully and talk about the bless-<lb />
ings we retain.<lb />
Americans who complain of<lb />
war discomforts can expect no<lb />
sympathy.<lb />
The proposed constitution o?<lb />
the Student Cooperative Gov-<lb />
ernment Association, w h i c h<lb />
passed the School Council<lb />
March 24 with a few minor<lb />
changes, will be presented to<lb />
student body in mass meeting<lb />
this Wednesday for action.<lb />
When it has been ratified, ar-<lb />
rangements for an immediate<lb />
General Election to fill the ma-<lb />
jor campus offices will be an-<lb />
nounced.<lb />
In the proposed constitution<lb />
provision is made for a joint<lb />
student government association<lb />
I that will bring the men and<lb />
 w men together in a general or-<lb />
j ganization. as is the case in most<lb />
I co-educational institutions, with<lb />
a separate organization for<lb />
i each set up under that to take<lb />
; care of problems of each par-<lb />
$-<lb />
ticular group.<lb />
Its major body will be an<lb />
executive and legislative group,<lb />
the Student Cooperative Coun-<lb />
cil, composed of approximately<lb />
fifty members and four advis-<lb />
ers, whose chief woik will be the<lb />
planning of a definite program<lb />
of construction activities for<lb />
the student body. Under its<lb />
leadership all student activities<lb />
will be coordinated in such a<lb />
way that each one will be a pan<lb />
of the general program.<lb />
The Men's Judiciary and the<lb />
Women's Judiciary, working in<lb />
cooperation with the House<lb />
Committees and Day-Student<lb />
Committees, will form the judi-<lb />
cial branch of the government,<lb />
and so will handle disciplinary<lb />
problems and routine matters<lb />
affecting the various dormi-<lb />
tories and day-student groups.<lb />
Members of the Constitution Committee: Bessie Fay Hunt, chairman; Joyce Dunham,<lb />
Virgil Ward, Estelle Davis, Evan Griffin, and Carlyle Cox. Not pictured: Willie Mae Daniels and<lb />
J. C. Shepherd. Jennings Ballard worked with the committee until he entered the Navy.<lb />
The Student Legislative Mass<lb />
Meeting, of which all students<lb />
enrolled in the college automa-<lb />
tically become members, will<lb />
share the legislative powers<lb />
with the Council.<lb />
A special feature of the new<lb />
organization is that every stu-<lb />
dent activity becomes an inte-<lb />
gral part of the Student Co-<lb />
operative Government Associa-<lb />
tion.<lb />
The Constitution Committee<lb />
states that in spite of the fact<lb />
that its work falls for short of<lb />
its hope, it believes that it is of-<lb />
fering to the student body a<lb />
"more democratic form of stu-<lb />
dent government, in which many<lb />
students will have the opportun-<lb />
ity of taking part and in which<lb />
there is definite emphasis upon<lb />
individual and group responsi-<lb />
bility as college citizens. The<lb />
committee is composed of Bessie<lb />
Fay Hunt, chairman, Carlyle<lb />
C6x, Jennings Ballard, J. C.<lb />

Constitution Is Fine<lb />
Piece Of Work<lb />
AlUr many hours of hard work the<lb />
Constitution Committee is bringing- to the<lb />
student body the extent of their effors. This<lb />
new organization is something we can and<lb />
will be proud to be a part of. Each of us is<lb />
deeply indebted to this group who has so<lb />
willing given their time to the betterment of<lb />
our governmental system on the campus.<lb />
This constitution is worked out in detail and<lb />
warrents careful study. When it is present-<lb />
ed at mass meeting everyone will have a<lb />
chance to ask any questions and have any-<lb />
thing they do not understand cleared up.<lb />
Our hats are off to you, Bessie Fay Hunt,<lb />
for your splendid work as chairman of the<lb />
committee, and to the entire committee. You<lb />
have certainly done your part well, here is<lb />
to the student body doing as much.<lb />
structive plan of government.<lb />
Herbert ReBarker.<lb />
March 31, 1943<lb />
Dear Miss. Hunt:<lb />
The constitution which your committee<lb />
submitted to the School Council on Wednes-<lb />
dav, March 24, and which will soon be pre-<lb />
sented to the student body, shows the result<lb />
of many hours of work.<lb />
Since the constitution makes provision<lb />
for a larger number of students to activity<lb />
participate in their p nernment, I trust we<lb />
will have a better mormed. a more under-<lb />
standing and a more cooperative student<lb />
body.<lb />
I pledge my support and that of my<lb />
staff to any movement which fosters better<lb />
citizenship here on the campus, and in the<lb />
linger communities in which our students<lb />
may live or work.<lb />
Sincerely yours,<lb />

The new Student Cooperative Govern-<lb />
ment Association is superior in many re-<lb />
spects to the former Student Government<lb />
Association. It affords a broader student<lb />
participation in governmental affairs. It is<lb />
more thoroughly democratic. It provides for<lb />
a more constructive student participation in<lb />
college life. It better coordinates and unifies<lb />
college activities. It more clearly defines the<lb />
functions of student government: It com-<lb />
prehends the student body in its entirety.<lb />
The students are to be congratulated for<lb />
having conceived and developed such a con-<lb />
I'm in favor of this new movement be-<lb />
cause it's, something that should have been<lb />
installed long ago. I hope it will stimulate<lb />
some school spirit.<lb />
Billy Greene.<lb />
The new constitution can be hours of<lb />
work thrown awav if the students of East<lb />
Carolina Teachers College do not stand be-<lb />
hind, defending, cooperating, and encourag-<lb />
ing, as it unfolds itself upon this campus.<lb />
Let us unite ourselves so closely with this<lb />
new governing set up that we become a dis-<lb />
tinct part of it, any we reveal our love and<lb />
confidence by displaying a spirit that could<lb />
never die.<lb />
Estelle Davis.<lb />
Camp Davis Rabbi<lb />
Assembly Speaker<lb />
That Judaism, along with 'the Christian<lb />
religion, has had a great influence on the<lb />
baste ideas in democracy was the theme of<lb />
Chaplain Ralph H. Blumenthal of Camp<lb />
Davis in a speech at the Assembly Mai eh 25.<lb />
Chaplain Blumenthal, a graduate oi the<lb />
i University of Cincinnati and Hebrew Union<lb />
College, had been invited to speak on the<lb />
contribution of the Jews to American<lb />
democracy.<lb />
After saving that many Jews in Amer-<lb />
ican history who made contributions m vari-<lb />
ous ways had done so. not as Jews, but as<lb />
Americans, the speaker suggested that he<lb />
limit his discussion to the effect ol Judaism<lb />
on democracy.<lb />
American democracy, he said, is not<lb />
something that sprang into being, but is the<lb />
product of a long difficult struggle that goes<lb />
far back into history.<lb />
He then traced the appearance and de-<lb />
velopment of the ideas of liberty, equality,<lb />
and fraternity among the Jews in their<lb />
wanderings in the wilderness and recalled<lb />
stories of the kings of Israel rebuked by the<lb />
prophets for violating the right of the in-<lb />
dividual at a time when in other nations<lb />
kings were working thousand of slaves to<lb />
death for their own selfish pleasure.<lb />
Democracy was guarded, he said, not<lb />
only by the prophets, but by the "constitu-<lb />
tion of the land the Bible, in which the<lb />
rights of the monarch were definitely<lb />
curbed.<lb />
Thu Judaism has made its greatest<lb />
contribution to democracy by the teachings<lb />
lof its "constitution<lb />
