A Definite Stride Toward World Peace<lb />
Endorsement by the Greenville alumni of East Carolina<lb />
Teachers College of the Declaration for a Federation of the World<lb />
can be looked upon as an expression of the teaching profession<lb />
for peace throughout the world. Even though the movement is<lb />
young, it's meaning is just as real as the foundation upon which<lb />
this great democracy of which are a part was founded. There<lb />
was unrest in the states of the new world until they united under<lb />
one flag; and it is apparent that unrest will continue to prevail<lb />
throughout the world today until all the countries in it are united<lb />
under a banner of common brotherhood. The spirit embodied in<lb />
the Constitution was the product of a few and later became<lb />
cherished by millions. Today the drive for a Federation of the<lb />
World is fostered by a few, and should it be perfected, it will<lb />
affect the lives of millions not only in the United States, but<lb />
throughout the world.<lb />
A Change In College Elections Wouldn't Hurt<lb />
While att riding the national student government conven-<lb />
tion recently, Walter Rodgers, president of the Men's Student<lb />
Government Association, and Doris Blalock, president of the<lb />
Women's Student Government Association, were familiarized<lb />
with a plan whereby college elections could be placed on a fairer<lb />
basis and simultaneously stimulate more interest. Under the new<lb />
set-up all officers would be ushered in office on the first ballot.<lb />
In the past there has been a heavy crop of second and even third<lb />
vott among the<lb />
tin1 new system would eradicate this condition. Too, there is a<lb />
lack of interest in most elections. The students owe it to them-<lb />
selves to take some interest in selecting leaders who will govern<lb />
them. If a new system of elections can do this, then it should be<lb />
welcomed at East Carolina Teachers College.<lb />

'provide definite proof that there has been a decided drop in at-<lb />
tendance of young men and women as compared with older per-<lb />
sons. Perhaps the answer rests in the fact that doctrines of<lb />
Christianity are put to them only once a week. Many will contend<lb />
that this has been the practice through the ages. Still, there ap-<lb />
pears to be more elements that keep people from Church today<lb />
than in years back. In order to compete with these elements,<lb />
some measures likely will have to be taken to keep the teachings<lb />
of Christ before young men and women more often than in "once-<lb />
a-week doses In non-sectarian schools, where instructors, be-<lb />
cause of regulations, are reluctant to mention religious problems<lb />
in the classroom, the problem might be solved by offering a<lb />

a problem that deserves a solution!<lb />

The Battle of Britain continues as usual with its aerial war<lb />
of blow after blow and retaliation after retaliation. However,<lb />
the leaders of the British are persistant in their reminders to the<lb />
populace that the threat of invasion is far b-om being dead.<lb />
Here in the United States last Monday President Roosevelt<lb />
informed Congress that a "swift and driving increase in our arm-<lb />
ament production" was the immediate need of a critical period,<lb />
and appealed for widespread personal sacrifices in a national<lb />
effort to defeat the Axis powers lest they win abroad and then<lb />
attack the Americas.<lb />
The Axis press reacted to the President's speech by describ-<lb />
ing it as historically inaccurate and by stating that it will have<lb />
no effect on the outcome of the war. It also said that Britain's<lb />
doom is sealed and American aid will come to late.<lb />
The President's call for a "swift and driving increase" in<lb />

Congress by a surge of sentiment for extensive British aid.<lb />
