While this is seen on much of our currency, not many really think about the power of the
message in that one phrase. However, our university lives, breathes, and exists because of
the message in that simple expression. Out of various cultures and distinct backgrounds
have come vivid imaginations and creative ideas. Out of the vast quests for learning more
about life and each other have come new pathways and initiatives in various academic and
social environments. Out of a sea of over 25,000 individuals, one great community has been
established as a prominent leader in collegiate advancement throughout North Carolina and

Resident Advisers prepared a luau theme for the incoming Jarvis Hall freshmen. Wearing leis and lime polos, the RAs prepared
various activities for students after they met their roommates and settled into their rooms. There were also informational meetings fol
parents to answer any questions they may have had.
It is one of the most exciting times in a recent high school
graduate's life: moving away from home and learning to live
on his own. For many, it can be scary not having Mom or
Dad to lean on. For most, though, it will prove to be the first
of many steps towards self awareness and_ personal
development. Roommates, meal plans, communal spaces
and residence hall living all play a big part in a new Pirate's
first steps on campus. They have a host of supporters,
though. Residence hall advisers and supporting staff
members help students make the transition from recent
grads to independent collegiate scholars.

goes On...
The Student Activity Board hosted its annual
Battle of the Bands in Hendrix Theater. Each
year the bands compete in front of a student
audience for the chance to perform at Barefoot
on the Mall. The competition was strong this
year, as bands from across North Carolina and
Viriginia waged audio war with each other for
almost four hours.
Typically there is only one winner. However,
because of really amazing performances, there
was a strong tie between the last two bands
standing: Blount Harvey and Love & Reverie.

Pirate Palooza =
starting the year off right
Most Pirates know that classes cannot begin before
the ultimate first-of-the-year kickoff. The Student
Activities Board put together another great event full
of free food, free swag, inflatables, music and fun.
Students had the opportunity to make their own
videos as well as compete for great prizes.
WZMB provided the music for the event, along with
great performances from Blount Harvey, The Brooks
Wood Band, Parmalee, and the student winners of
) the ECU Stars competition.

Homecoming is one of the most exciting traditions
at East Carolina. The football game is, for most, the
highlight of the event, but there is so much more that
goes on before the big game.
For starters, there is the choosing of the new king
and queen. There's the homecoming parade.
There are the campus competitions. And there's the
homecoming concert. So much is put on by the
entire campus community and student body.

overall banner and parade float competitions.
Highlights of this year's homecoming included the

Students who attended the 2008 Homecoming concert were
blown away by an electric performance by one of hip hop's
biggest little men - Lupe Fiasco. Backed by a full band and Du,
Lupe wowed the crowd with hits from his hit aloums, including
Kick, Push�, Paris, Tokyo�, Superstar� and a host of other
songs. The vibe was surreal, and Minges Coliseum was alive
and rocking along with Fiasco's energetic stage presence.
Some students who remained after the concert were fortunate
adore enough to catch short conversations with the rap star. When
isked about his experience at ECU, Lupe gave a very humble
response.

The time comes only every four years, but the ECU
community can say that it was a part of the experience
this time around. Students and staff had the
opportunity to meet and hear Senator Joe Biden speak
on behalf of president-elect Barack Obama. Various
campus organizations, including the ECU Young
Democrats, rallied with community organizations to
hear Biden speak. The visit was short, but it was
definitely a memorable one.

Comedic actor Kal Penn stopped by ECU to speak to the student
body. Best know for his roles as Kumar Patel in Harold and
Kumar Go to White Castle and its sequel, Harold and Kumar
Escape from Guantanamo Bay, his purpose in coming to campus
was much more serious than his on-screen character.
Penn came to campus by request of the ECU Young Democrats.
His goal, along with other celebrities that visited campus, was to
galvanize college students to vote in the 2008 election. Penn
spoke to students at various areas around campus and spent time
getting to know eastern North Carolina. Though ECU is no
White Castle�, Kal Penn enjoyed being around the Pirates just as
much.

These costs include $1.5 million for asbestos abatement which was completed
before the rebuilding began.
The event included a ribbon cutting ceremony and tours of the transformed
building. Among those in attendance were North Carolina State Representatives Se nae | ee
Marion McLawhorn and Edith Warren. Chancellor Steve Ballard commented,
The College of Health and Human Performance is really the epitome of a college
that is doing all that can be done and all that should be done to move a university
forward.�
With the exception of the exterior walls, the building is brand new and includes
specifically designed research laboratories, teaching labs, and three auditoriums.
All auditorium and teaching spaces are equipped with technology including video
conferencing capabilities in the 95 seat auditorium. Hudsons, named in honor of
John and Harriet Hudson, is located on the first floor and offers ready to eat
sandwiches, salads, beverages, and Starbucks coffee.

Most everyone knows the importance of giving, but very few
understand the importance of giving of oneself. NPHC sororities
Stepped up to the plate this year and did just that. They, in
collaboration with Student Health Services, organized a campus
blood drive.
National Pan-Hellenic Counci spent the day in Student Health
registering students and staff to give blood for the American Red
Cross. Assistant Director of Greek Life Tierini Hodges was very
pleased with the outcome.
The student were a great help,� she said. They understand the
importance of reaching out to the community. Sometimes it can be
a matter of life and death.�
