          <lb />c<lb /><lb />{ ol<lb /><lb />.<lb /><lb />G<lb /><lb />The Fresy<lb /><lb />10<lb /><lb />Walking on campus, being a veteran student, it is very easy to spot the prospective and orientation students. If<lb />you take away the white and purple university bags they are carrying which is full of dozens of university<lb />pamphlets and handouts, and omit the concerned parents and helpless siblings that are shadowing their footsteps,<lb />there lies only the prospective student. Apart from their youthful complexion, you can always tell the fresh meat<lb />from the seasoned veterans, because the new students always dress their best, whether their posture is overly<lb />confident to impress or lacking confidence, they look absolutely lost, and they are way too excited about the<lb />pending freedoms that lie on college campuses.<lb /><lb />Last year over 4,000 students visited East Carolina with the interest of attending. Around 2,500 students<lb />applied, were accepted, and attended freshman orientation. Orientation is every students' initiation to their future<lb />university; it is the foundation to their future college experiences. Colleges everywhere pull out all the stops to<lb />make the parents of new students comfortable and confident about the institution while informing, organizing,<lb />and rallying up the new freshman class.<lb /><lb />University, department and program introductions fill the days' events. Former high school students have the<lb />opportunity to get a taste of what it is like to be a true college student. And there is no better way of doing that<lb />than having East Carolina students present and instruct most of the orientation activities. Over 100 students<lb />participate in hosting orientation as tour guides, activity directors, guest speakers, resident hall advisers and<lb />student organization representatives.<lb /><lb />The highlights of most incoming freshman's visit are: viewing the residence halls, checking out the cafeteria,<lb />holding their student IDs for the first time, and experiencing a world without their parents.<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />os,<lb />sat<lb /><lb />re<lb /><lb />cm<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />STRANGER NN ANEN LAND<lb /><lb />Driving to campus for the first time was unforgettable. As I drove passed all of the buildings on Tenth Street, I tried to<lb />memorize as much of the landscape of campus as I could (even though I did not know the names of the buildings). As<lb /><lb />my parents drove me up College Hill to moved me into my room, I was filled with as much excitement as a six year old<lb />visiting Disney World.<lb /><lb />I met so many people from my building randomly; I remember I could not remember all of their names or even which<lb />Tooms they were in. The girls on my hall became this notoriously social sisterhood. We would always do everything<lb />together: walking to class, going to the dining hall, attending parties... EVERYTHING together. We were unforgettable;<lb />veryone knew us as the fifteen energetic, inseparable freshmen. We were a sea of fashion and giggles.<lb /><lb />I remember we had no clue what we were doing. We relied on fliers and our RA to tell us when football games and other<lb />activities were going on. Football games were electrifying, and the sea of fans was spellbinding. There was always<lb />Something going. Free stuff was everywhere!<lb /><lb />When the newness of campus life wore off, the most mystical revelation occurred: I could do whatever I wanted! There<lb /><lb />Was no one telling me what to do and when to do it. There were a few rules that seemed common sense, but everything<lb />else was fair game.<lb /><lb />I learned quickly that if I attended class and took good notes, I could make a B or better on my quizzes. If I completed<lb />nly Papers earlier than the due date, I could take them to this thing called the writing lab and get help on them to get a<lb />etter chance of earning an A. I studied late at night with groups, order pizza, went to the library, and generally made<lb />800d grades on my exams. I learned to create a balance between my social life, evening activities and school<lb />responsibilities. I realized that being able to stay at East Carolina University is an earned privilege, not a right.<lb /><lb />I took care of all of my responsibilities, which became second nature to me. I enjoyed the college culture. I supported<lb />the athletic games and went to the movies on campus. I attended the campus festivals, pickup games and late-nighters. I<lb />ad plenty of pictures to prove it, too. Those photos were snapshots of some great memories and amazing friends. The<lb /><lb />St part was realizing that I was going to do this again for the next three years.<lb /><lb />Who knew life could be this good?<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ps 4 ~<lb />i ; } a<lb /> thea . ~2 ~<lb />Matthew Sexton, Chris Cozart, Lauren Tanner, and Chris Kristin Black and Sara McFelly start their college careers with<lb />Reynolds embrace their new adventures at East Carolina. accordingly with smiles.<lb />11<lb /><lb />a :<lb />aa<lb />le<lb /><lb />ee<lb />oe<lb /><lb />22<lb /><lb />23<lb /><lb />24<lb /></p>

At East Carolina, the<lb />decision to live on campus is completely<lb /><lb />optional.<lb /><lb />Why do so many students choose to live on<lb />campus? There are many benefits to living on<lb />campus: you are within walking distance to<lb />your classes; you are close to downtown, you<lb />have full access to an amazing gym, you have a<lb />bus system that will take you anywhere you<lb />want in town, the newly renovated dining halls,<lb />and tons of free events and programs. <lb />On October 26, 2009, Katelynn Cusanelli<lb />spoke to students about the importance of<lb />individuality and her journey to fully<lb />embracing it. Katelynn is most well<lb />known for her role on MTVs Real World<lb />Brooklyn 2009, being the first transgender<lb />woman cast member. Before her national<lb />debut on MTV, she was an active leader in<lb />the GLBT (Gay Lesbian Bisexual<lb />Transgender) community in Florida. She<lb />told her story eloquently using frequent<lb />bursts of humor and raunchiness,<lb />entertaining her listeners and provoking<lb />them to think about the hardship of finding<lb />acceptance in her shoes.<lb /><lb />Before joining the Real World cast,<lb />Katelynn understood the repercussions of<lb />being on the show, especially because she<lb />was a transgender woman. Being on<lb /><lb />television was not what she wanted; in oe<lb /><lb />fact, after being chosen, she protested not : Es Katelynn Cusanelli speaks to<lb />to participate. Eyes and<lb />ears listened to every second of Katelynns autobiography, beginning<lb />with her first acknowledgment of a desired sex change, to her being a<lb />guest speaker at various institutions.<lb /><lb />Growing up, Katelynn wore womens clothing underneath mens<lb />clothes; she faced prejudice in the workplace; finding love was an<lb />incredible challenge. Before filming The Real World, Katelynn had<lb />her gender reassignment surgery, which occurred after her hormone<lb />therapy. She noted that she gained a lot from the therapy, and that<lb />being transgender has emotional issues not dealing with the transgender<lb />process itself. I had abandonment issues, which was something she<lb />worked on during the one year of therapy before anyone can get gender<lb />reassignment surgery.<lb /><lb />Tm going to live my life the way I see fit, said Katelynn.<lb />Following the obstacles she overcame, Katelynn remains jubilant,<lb />triumphant, ostentatious, and a role model to many.<lb /><lb />with a student at the Ledonia<lb />Wright Cultural Center.<lb /><lb /></p>

At this time the moon<lb />is noted to be at its fullest and brightest phase. The moon is<lb />symbolic for family reunion and is one of the most<lb />important traditions in the Chinese culture.<lb /><lb />At East Carolina University, the event started with a line of<lb />people preparing to engorge themselves with vast amounts<lb />of Chinese food, as food is an important part of this<lb />festival. During the meal, Hsin Dong, director of student<lb />programming at LWCC, told a traditional Chinese legend<lb />to the crowd. Following the storytelling there was a<lb />musical duet performed by two Chinese Students. After the<lb />food, story and song, the much-anticipated spectacular lion<lb />dance took place and was performed by Thanh and his<lb />friends from the Cary Asian Center. The Lion wards off<lb /><lb />bad spirits and welcomes the New Year; it is also a symbol<lb /><lb />of strength and wisdom. The dance is usually performed by<lb />two or three people.<lb /><lb />When the lion dance was over, the conclusion of the event<lb />took place at the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center. <lb />L.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />October brings many affirmations of the arrival of<lb />fall. From pumpkins to changing leave, frosty nights<lb />and cool days, many things point to the changing of<lb />the seasons. In Greenville, and more specifically at<lb />East Carolina University, one of the things most<lb />looked forward to during the fall season is<lb />Halloween, and all of the horrors and haunts that<lb />come with it. For some reason, perhaps it is the<lb />uncertainty of the weather, Pirates all over<lb />Greenville and Eastern North Carolina look to shake<lb />themselves up and test their fear limit as much as<lb />possible. Be it horror movies or haunted houses or<lb />maybe even a haunted corn maze, nothing gets a<lb />Pirate going like Halloween and all of the events that<lb />precede this night of fun, fright, and festivity. One of<lb />the local attractions in Greenville, a treasure of the<lb />East, is Brileys corn maze. Started in 2003 the corn<lb />maze has been running successfully every fall since.<lb />Attracting customers from as far away as Virginia,<lb />Brileys truly does get its patrons in the fall, and<lb />Halloween, spirit. In fact this year, for the first time,<lb />the Student Activities Board at East Carolina _<lb />University reserved Brileys corn mazes for ECU<lb />students, providing transportation to and from the<lb />farm, and partial coverage of the ticket purchase<lb />price; thus, giving students the opportunity to<lb />experience the haunted... and not so haunted corn<lb />maze at Brileys. Brileys haunted corn maze is a<lb />true...fright... to behold. With horror characters<lb />such as Jason from Friday the 13th, and Hannibal<lb />Lector from Silence of the Lambs, patrons and<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Pirates alike have more than ample opportunity<lb /><lb />_"""""""<lb /><lb />to test their scare limits. It takes approximately 35<lb />minutes to navigate the nearly 4 acre haunted<lb />maze, and its numerous fright rooms and<lb />corridors will definitely not disappoint anyone<lb />seeking to be horribly entertained. Planning for<lb />both the haunted and traditional mazes begins<lb />early in the year. When the time comes to actually<lb />build the haunted maze, ideas are made, plans are<lb />drawn, and the owners of the farm, brothers, Joey<lb />and Jeffry Whithurst, along with local help,<lb />construct the maze from scratch. The haunted<lb />maze starts with a five to six minute ride to the<lb />middle of the field during which the excitement<lb />and fear builds. As one walks through the maze<lb />there are several areas or rooms that attract or<lb />negate attention. One interesting room is the Hall<lb />of Faces. Walking in one can see a plethora of<lb />neon illuminated face in this very dark, dark<lb />room. Be careful though, not all of the faces are<lb />glued to the wall! Another interesting feature in<lb />the haunted maze is the revolving tunnel. Inside is<lb />dark except for the swirling lights that illuminate<lb />the rotating tube. Imagine being highly intoxicated<lb />inside the Millennium Falcon as Han Solo and<lb />Luke jump into hyper drive, and you might have a<lb />slight feeling of what it is like to be in this tunnel.<lb />The Haunted Maze has been a success every year<lb />since its open and will continue to be an attraction<lb />during the Halloween season as long as people<lb />continue to enjoy getting the crap scared out of<lb />them.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />28<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />View of<lb />corn<lb />maze ©<lb />from "<lb />above ©<lb /><lb />22 23<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />So how do Pirates hunker down for what can be a stressful end-of-the-<lb />semester ride? It is true that no two students study the same way, but with<lb />the following tips and observations from experienced Pirates, studying for<lb /><lb />exams will hopefully be less stressful.<lb /><lb />Tip #1 Dress for Comfort<lb />Apparel of choice: pajamas,<lb />yoga pants, gym shorts, sweats,<lb />t-shirts, Ugg boots, flip flops<lb />and Nikes. The thought here is<lb />absolute comfort. &amp;<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Tip #2 Be an Academic Vampire<lb /><lb />An academic vampire, one of the few who has discovered<lb />the vast possibilities in becoming academically nocturnal.§<lb />Look at all the events available on campus during exam<lb />and exam prep time. Most public areas are open 24/7 and a<lb />usually everyone drives themselves insane until midnight.<lb />To avoid all space competition, nervous breakdowns, and<lb />stressful environments, turn your schedule upside down and<lb />make everything available to you.<lb /><lb />Rules for being an Academic Vampire:<lb /><lb />¢ Commit to relaxing and sleeping during the day.<lb /><lb />Unplug from the stresses of the outside world. If it is<lb />important, then tell someone to e-mail you.<lb /><lb />¢ Take advantage of all the free stuff and special events on<lb />campus during the day. You will be able to unwind and .<lb />save a lot of money at the same time.<lb /><lb />¢ When walking around campus at night, be aware o<lb />everything going on around you. At least, that was the feeling on campus as the Pirates<lb />Jrom all around enjoyed friendly snowball fights, building snowmen<lb />and simply basking in the frigid weather.<lb /><lb />Because eastern North Carolina rarely receives more than a<lb />dusting of snow during a typical winter season, the abundance of<lb />winter weather seemed to be welcomed by most of the younger<lb />campus community. The US is like the only place that has multiple choice.<lb /><lb />What do you think about the dining hall food?<lb />Ryan: It started off decent at the beginning of the first semester<lb />Christian: The first day I arrived and saw the buffet and stuff and I thought, oh I can live here forever! Theres so<lb />much choice! But after one week I realized that its always the same. |<lb />Ryan: Yeah, some things in the dining hall are nice, like the pizza. If you try really hard you can make a pretty<lb />decent meal most times, but its really easy to just take burgers and chips and stuff like that.<lb /><lb />What ts the best part of being in the US?<lb />Liliana: Its cheap.<lb />Troy: Yeah its way cheaper to get around than in Australia.<lb />Ryan: Everyone is obsessed with your accent. It makes it really easy to talk to people.<lb /><lb />What ts the hardest part of being in the US?<lb />Ryan: Not being able to get around without a car.<lb />Troy: Yeah, you cant go anywhere without someone to drive you.<lb /><lb />How do you deal with being away from your boyfriend or girlfriend?<lb />Liliana: Um, its hard, but theres Skype.<lb /><lb />Christian: Yeah, Skype especially with video is actually quite good.<lb /><lb />What advice would you give to students here who are going overseas to study abroad?<lb /><lb />Ryan: Start getting your visa stuff really early, because it is really stressful with the amount of forms you have to do.<lb /><lb />Save lots of money.<lb />Ryan: Save more money than you think youll ever need because it means you'll be able to travel.<lb />Christian: I was worrying about the money, that I didnt have enough, but now I realize I have much more than |<lb />_ need.<lb />Christian: I expected to spend much more for traveling.<lb />Liliana: And plan out your travels.<lb />Troy: Yeah, just plan things out if you want to cut down on stress.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Oiwiel omit<lb /><lb />Christian is from Frieburg, Germany and is majoring in<lb />Sports Science at ECU. He decided to come to ECU<lb />because of ECUs big sports department. The biggest<lb /><lb />adjustments for him were getting used to sharing a room,<lb /><lb />living in a smaller city, and not being able to cook. More<lb />than anything he misses his girlfriend, having his own<lb />room, mobility, and good food.<lb /><lb />Liliana Olteanu<lb />Liliana is a Psychology major from Tours, France. She came to ECU because it<lb />offered good classes for her major, and because of its location near the beach.<lb />The hardest thing for her coming to ECU was communication; she said The first<lb />weeks were a nightmare to me! I wasn't that good at English and understanding<lb />the accent of American students (for some reason I didn't have problems to<lb />understand teachers) but also the accent of all the international students was<lb />really hard. The things she misses most are her family, friends, boyfriend, and<lb />French food.<lb /><lb />Ryan Pasi<lb /><lb />Irn-Bru.<lb /><lb />Troy Nicholson<lb />Troy is from Sydney, Australia and is majoring in Journalism. At ECU hes taking two<lb />classes for his major (Media Effects and Advanced Reporting) and two classes just to<lb />try something new (Introduction to Philosophy and Psychology). Troy said the biggest<lb />adjustment for him at ECU was food; in Australia he cooks for himself three times a<lb />day, but here he eats the majority of his meals in the dining hall (and we all know how<lb />that is). When asked about what he misses most about being home, he said I miss a lot<lb />of things about home. Friends and family are the main things I miss, but I keep in<lb />touch with a lot of them via Skype and Facebook. I also miss the little things like Aussie<lb />food, Aussie television and Australian accents!<lb /><lb />Ryan came to ECU from Glasgow, Scotland and is studying<lb />Marketing and Economics. He chose ECU because it was<lb />one of the only schools that covered all of the classes he<lb />needed. The biggest changes for him were not being able to<lb />cook his own meals and having to share a room, and the<lb />things he misses most are his kitchen and a soft drink called<lb /><lb />Student Life<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />urning Spring into Col<lb /><lb />It is the end of winter, a time when we celebrate Holi. Holi is an annual tradition<lb />commonly honored by various South Asian cultures. With our friends and family,<lb />we welcome Mother Natures turning of the season. It is still cold; the raindrops<lb />still greet us with chills in their touches; the wind is yet to feel like it hugs our<lb />skins; the sun, although it shines through, the rays are yet to wrap us in warmth.<lb />We are eager to see the color of life grow from the grass and sprout from the trees;<lb />we are looking forward to freshly bloomed flowers dabbled along the median of<lb />highways; we are anticipating warmer weather, and the promise of crops.<lb /><lb />Before us is an array of colored powders. These different hues symbolize the<lb />many shades of spring. With the music playing loudly, we are ready to begin the<lb />fun. Throwing powder and chasing each other, we paint ourselves elaborately<lb />with colors and joy. Our faces could cause speculations that perhaps we have<lb />been overcome in a rainbow war zone. The hairs on our heads no longer even<lb />relatively natural anymore; they scream out vibrant, extraordinary, and look at me!<lb />Everyone is laughing, and it feels great although the air is quite chilly, which<lb />explains why we did not include water colors in our celebration this year.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />All good things must come to an end, so despite the support and interest in Holi<lb />from the faculty at LWCC (Ledonia Wright Cultural Center) and ASA (Asian<lb />Student Association), our powders ran out. We did well in celebrating the birth of<lb />spring, and we exercised our friendships with one another by coming together and<lb />showing appreciation for this event.May the birds travel back our way, and may<lb />you feel grand after a long winter.<lb /><lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>" Greenville Vleets,<lb /><lb />Le |<lb /><lb />On October 9, 2009, the Ledonia Cultural center<lb />took a group of students to Washington, D.C.<lb />During the three day trip, students discovered<lb />the big city and participated in giving back to<lb />the community. The first day, the group toured<lb /><lb />the Capitol building, and then the students were "<lb /><lb />given choices on how they would like to spend<lb />their time. They could volunteer at the food<lb />bank, attend a crash course on how to ride the -<lb />metro, or participate in the national equality<lb />march to the capitol. When the students were<lb />not engaged in their events, they were free to<lb />dabble in this sprawling city of big buildings _<lb />and never ending faces. Most students explored<lb />the many museums that D.C had to offer, and<lb />other students visited friends and family that<lb />resided within the vicinity. Volunteering at the<lb />food bank posed a rewarding feeling in that so<lb />little effort from one individual combined with.<lb />the little efforts from hundreds of other<lb />individuals will make an enormous impact on<lb />need based communities. That day, not only<lb />were there volunteers from the local area,<lb /><lb />but there were students from several universities<lb />along the east coast all working cased to serve<lb />the ee<lb /><lb />The National Equality March took place<lb />the weekend of the D.C trip. It was an act<lb />to promote gay and lesbian rights. There<lb /><lb />were a countless number of people not only<lb /><lb />exevovmalssviomeltimmerlacermolelary em sxe melieoe<lb />countries as well. This event represented<lb />more than a fight for gay marriage, but<lb />unison of human beings advocating<lb />humanitarian righteousness. The turnout<lb />was beautiful in that the support was<lb />overwhelming; thousands of people<lb />showed up to march. After three days<lb /><lb />of exploration, also known as Discover<lb />D.C, it was time to pack up and say<lb /><lb />hello to Greenville. As soon as the group<lb />loaded themselves onto the tour bus,<lb />everyone expressed their experience<lb /><lb />of the trip, followed by a lingering feeling<lb />in the air that made everyone tired and ©<lb />caused the noise level to drop to only<lb /><lb />the sounds of the wheels turning.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Pirates and non-Pirates alike gathered in Wright<lb />Auditorium during ECUs 28th Annual Battle<lb />of the Bands. The event, which took place on<lb />Friday, March 19, included performances by<lb />Mixed Solution, En Serenade, Born under<lb />Punches, Vegas Masquerade, and Crimson<lb />Refuge. All five bands gave great performances,<lb />despite some bumps in the road along the way.<lb /><lb />| Crimson Refuge took the stage and got the<lb />| crowd clapping like a U2 concert in the 80s<lb />with their rock and roll style and melodic<lb />vocals. When asked about his bands<lb />performance after the set, Crimson Refuges<lb />lead singer Cory Nobles, a senior and Geology<lb />major here at ECU, said he thought it went<lb />really well, even though hed been having vocal<lb />problems lately and had an upcoming vocal<lb />surgery.<lb /><lb />For En Serenade, who took the stage just after<lb />Crimson Refuge, these bumps in the road were<lb />literal; their van broke down twice on the way<lb />to the competition. Despite spending an hour<lb />and a half stranded on the side of the interstate,<lb />the band still managed to deliver an energetic<lb />performance that drew members of the audience<lb />to the front of the stage.<lb /><lb />The event, which awarded eventual winner<lb />Mixed Solutions a $500 grand prize, was<lb />enjoyed by everyone who made it to the event.<lb />Crimson Refuge, didnt make out badly either<lb />and took home the $250 prize for second place.<lb />Mixed Solutions will return to open ECUs 31st<lb />Annual Barefoot on the Mall on Thursday,<lb />April 22. <lb />reg Mortenson Ma<lb /><lb />Have you read the book Three Cups of Tea? Does the<lb />combination of a veteran climber, a humanitarian, and a New<lb />York Times bestselling author conjure up the name Greg<lb />Mortenson?<lb />| On March 1, 2010, the ECU College of Business invited<lb />Greg Mortenson to speak in the Minges Coliseum in front of a<lb />crowd made up of students, professors, faculty, and community<lb />members. Mortenson is best known for his contributions to<lb />humanity alongside his attempt to conquer Karakoram, mostly<lb />referred to as K2. .<lb /><lb />In 1992 Mortenson and his climbing partners took the<lb />opportunity to climb Pakistans K2. He had an objective of<lb />burying his sisters necklace at the summit of the climb, but<lb />failure took his objective and threw it down with the avalanches<lb />during one of the seventy-eight cold days of maneuvering up the<lb />mountain. After his surrender to the treacherous conditions of<lb />the worlds second tallest peak, Mortenson found himself in the<lb />care of the inhabitants of Korphe, a town surrounding the epic<lb /><lb />vertical giant that has claimed the many lives of climbers.<lb /><lb />During his time in Korphe, though he did not know it yet.<lb />Mortenson was laying down the foundation of strong<lb />relationships with the people of Pakistan. Before retreating to<lb />America, Mortenson left the village with one promise, I will<lb />build a school.<lb /><lb />With that promise came great results and blessings for the<lb />people of Pakistan, and was a testament to the character of Greg<lb />Mortenson. This mans drive and purpose created a ripple effect<lb />that touched not only the beneficiaries of his schools, but<lb />American children, climbers, and politicians; and the ripple was<lb />also evident in the pool of listeners in the Minges Colisiseum.<lb /><lb />Mortenson spoke with a gentle purpose in his voice, his<lb />choice of words and mannerism dictated by his purpose to<lb />promote kindness and righteousness. Education is the key to<lb />preventing terrorism and to uplift women into leading healthy<lb />lives, all of which build a community rich in knowledge and<lb />compassion. A prime example is that the Taliban has a higher<lb />chance of recruiting boys from illiterate mothers; this holds true.<lb />During his speech, he applauded every student in the room,<lb /><lb />" "" ad<lb /><lb />=. 25°F . ce<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00037088_0085" />
        <p>a<lb /><lb />CD<lb />7 Q<lb /><lb />ect<lb /><lb />rab)<lb /><lb />IC.<lb /><lb />especially those who will be first generation college graduates,<lb />incredibly emphasizing that knowledge is power. In his book,<lb />he mentioned that his good friend Haji Ali wanted nothing more<lb />than to educate the children of Korphe. In his speech, he<lb />Mentioned that he asked the citizens of central Asia what they<lb />wanted most, and the women replied that they did not want their<lb />babies to die so that they may attend school.<lb /><lb />While spreading academic institutions in central Asia,<lb />Mortenson has come to learn that a way to empower people is to<lb />©mpower the elders. When trying to determine what is best for<lb />a country, one should consult the group of seniors. There are<lb />thirty-two provinces in Afghanistan, and in each province there<lb />are ten to twelve elders; these elders are the real integrity and<lb />Power of the country. It is important that we devote time to our<lb />Senior citizens and lend our hands to help our communities, our<lb />World. It is especially essential for progression that we listen<lb />More, we let our hearts speak, and we take good notes.<lb /><lb />Though the larger than life success of this one man is now<lb />breathing on its own, it still does not overshadow the hardships<lb /><lb />that Mortenson encountered before creating this life. Generating<lb />money to fund his project was many times near hopeless, and<lb /><lb />sometimes when things started to look up, it took a turn back<lb /><lb />down. Occasionally, the only thing that stood clearly was a<lb />vocal promise, I will build a school. All else crumbled, it<lb />seemed. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of working late<lb />hospital shifts, living in less than comfortable quarters, and<lb />rampant traveling, Mortenson combined passion, perseverance,<lb />and patience, ultimately resulting in his success.<lb /><lb />Throughout the night, the Minges Coliseum was flooded<lb />with an exuberance of admiration and pride for this bold man in<lb />a dark suit, accented with a purple and gold tie by the name of<lb />Greg Mortenson. 3<lb /><lb />- Academics<lb /><lb />tae<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />A Theatrical Treasure:<lb /><lb />Where are you originally from? What interested you in your major?<lb /><lb />I'm from Winston-Salem, NC. I lived there until I I've always known that I wanted to study theatre when I<lb /><lb />moved to Greenville [for college]. went to college. I never had any interest in another major,<lb />but I always assumed I'd study acting. Once I got to ECU, I<lb />realized that acting wasn't meant for me. But not knowing<lb />what else to study I kept taking theatre classes, including<lb />costuming. Once I was in the class I realized I was actually<lb />pretty good at it and enjoyed it just as much as acting. I love<lb />that everyday I come to campus, I get to work in the<lb />costume shop doing what I love<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00037088_0087" />
        <p>What has been your weirdest college<lb /><lb />experience?<lb />Being a theatre major, we are destined to have weirder<lb />experiences than most students. I've been a part of making<lb />Some very wacky costumes, including a snake, a dragonfly<lb />and a large single breast man. But one of the weirdest times<lb />was in my theatre history class. My group had to present a<lb />Roman play called The Eunuch. We decided to re-tell the<lb />Story as a children's story gone horribly wrong. We ad-libbed<lb />Most of the presentation, but our class and our teacher loved<lb />it. It was so funny and so much fun!<lb /><lb />What are you career plans after<lb />college?<lb />I plan on going to graduate school as soon as I can after I<lb />graduate from ECU. I want to continue developing my<lb />skills as a designer so that eventually I can be the head<lb />costume designer for a regional theater or somewhere<lb />even bigger, like for film or Broadway. I'd love to work<lb />at any location or theatre that would allow me to design<lb />and construct costumes for shows.<lb /><lb />Academics 83<lb /><lb /></p>
