Ainsworth being awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his service and leadership in the South Pacific Force. In 1940 and 1941, Ainsworth commanded a destroyer squadron in the Caribbean and the Atlantic. There he also commanded the battleship MISSISSIPPI until July 4, 1942 when he became Commander of Destroyers, Pacific Fleet.
