Governance Committee
Motion on University Committees on Athletics

After reviewing the data submitted to us by the universities within the
UNC system (copy attached) we recommend that President Spangler encourage

the Chancellors of the constituent universities to adopt the following:

1. The university's committee on athletics should

include the NCAA representative among its membership;

d. report at least annually to the faculty;

e. have a written charge that is included in the Faculty Handbook;

The university's committee on athletics should include in its charge
oversight responsibility for the maintenance of the principle of
sound academic standards in relation to its student athletes. The
administration should provide to the committee the necessary

information to fulfill this charge.

The NCAA representative should report annually to the Faculty
Council/Senate on how the university's vote has been cast on each

issue brought before the NCAA and why.
