SUBJ: Policy Regarding Frequent Flier Credits

At the last Faculty Senate meeting, you raised a question that
I was unable to answer at the time. Specifically, you asked
what happens with the credits earned by campus employees under
frequent flier programs. I have researched this question and
can now provide you with an answer.

Neither the State of North Carolina nor the campus have a
policy regarding what the employee is to do with frequent flier
credits earned while traveling on University business. I was
very relieved to find this out. Since I came from a state
that, at one time, attempted to centralize the accumulation of
these credits, I know what a nightmare of bureaucracy that can
be. It turned out to be a terrible fiasco. Despite an
inordinate amount of administrative time and cost, the program
failed completely. These are incentives offered to the
individual flier that he/she may choose to accept or not. They
are not intended by the airlines as an incentive to the
organization. With the removal of individual incentive,
travelers just did not go through the extra effort to get
frequent flier miles credited back to the university. If such
a process existed at ECU, it wauld qualify for the type of "red
tape cutting" I am attempting to initiate. I am very relieved
that our faculty and staff are not encumbered by such needless
bureaucracy.
