Election of Agenda Committee (1989/90) Five Members to be Elected, 1-Year Terms Attachment 1, Page 1 CANDIDATES FOR CHATR OF THE FACULTY James Joyce, Professor Physics (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1967) For nineteen years, I have served on the faculty of the Physics Department, rising to the rank of professor in 1979. Active in the research areas of atomic physics and physics applied to medicine, I have published more than 36 journal articles and 71 abstracts. I have served as Director of the ECU Accelerator Laboratory until 1977 and then as Director of Digital Systems for the Physics Department. Continually active on university committees, I have served as Chair of the Faculty Computer Committee for four years and as Chair of the Libraries Committee for three years. I have also served on a number of administrative committees including, most notably, as Chair of The Computer Planning Task Force in 78-79 and on search committees for the Director of Academic Library Services and for the Director of Computing and Information Systems. Most recently, I have been privileged to serve as Parliamentarian of the Faculty for two years and as Secretary of the Faculty for two years. In evidence of my concern for teaching, I have been selected as a finalist for the Alumni Teaching Awards two of the past three years. Stephen Thomas, Associate Professor Allied Health Sciences Since 1972, I have served on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin, Stout; the University of Arizona; and East Carolina University (for nearly nine years). On each campus, I was involved with various department, school, and university committees. My major university involvements at ECU include: Vice Chair of the Faculty, 1988-89; Faculty Senator for Allied Health Sciences since 1983; Senate Alternate, 1981-82; Alternate for UNC Faculty Assembly, 1983-84; Agenda Committee, 1988-89; Student Health Services Committee, 1984-89 (Chair 1988-89); Graduate Studies Committee, School of Allied Health Sciences, 1984-89; External Environmental Analysis Work Group, Strategic Planning for East Carolina University, 1988-89. The most important forum for faculty input into university governance is the Faculty Senate. This body also serves the overall welfare of the faculty by discussing and debating issues of moral, ethical, and professional concern to the university community. Not all topics have unanimous popular support and Faculty Senate deliberations may not always result in consensus. However, the opportunities for free and open expression the Senate affords are an essential ingredient for growth in an academic environment. Beyond the need to address new issues, it is important that we continue to maintain those values and traditions that positively influence the highest standards in academic integrity and excellence. As Chair of the Faculty, I would seek to foster opportunities for creative and enlightened thought and the open expression of ideas in an environment of mutual exchange, respect, and support. JI would accomplish this through the guidance of committee activities and the development of Senate Agendas which will ensure that a broad spectrum of concerns are aired, solutions are generated, and thoughtful action is taken to directly address these faculty concerns. Attachment 1, Page 2 CANDIDATES FOR VICE CHAIR OF THE FACULTY Stella Daugherty, Associate Professor Mathematics Since I enjoy being active in the Faculty Senate, I am interested in the position of Vice Chair of the Faculty. I have been a member of the Faculty Senate in prior years, during which I served as Vice Chair for two terms, and as Secretary for at least three terms. As Vice Chair, I served as ex-officio on approximately eight of the Academic and Senate Committees. When I was a member of the Curriculum Committee, I served as Secretary and as Chair for several terms. With this experience, I feel that I am well aware of the commitment necessary to carry out the duties of this office. Judy Sadler, Associate Professor Library and Information Studies My commitment to faculty participation in university governance is reflected in my committee work both at the departmental and university levels. I would like to give a short sampling of my involvement. I have been a member of the Dept. of Library and Information Studies faculty for twenty years. I have served as my unit's representative or alternate to the Faculty Senate for a total of thirteen years and served an additional year as Parliamentarian of the Faculty Senate. I serve presently on the Committee on Committees and also served during the early eighties when the CoC was charged with reviewing and revising all academic committee charges. I have served as a member of the Faculty Governance Committee. During that time, the FGC requested all units to revise their codes to conform with the revised Appendix C section of the East Carolina University Code which has to do with assigning weights to the three areas of teaching, research, and service, and are used to evaluate faculty performance. Other Faculty Senate committees include: University hearing committee, Nominating and Agenda Committees. I have served as a representative and as an alternate on the Graduate Council for a total of nine years, and as a member of the Graduate Curriculum Committee since 1983. Iwas the Chair of my unit's original Code Committee, and it was one of the first three or four codes to receive final approval. Looking ahead to 1989/90, I see additional opportunities for the faculty to make large contributions in the planning process and the revision of Appendix C "Personnel Policies and Procedures for the Faculty of East Carolina University" and would consider it an honor to serve in the capacity of Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate during this time. Attachment 1, Page 3 CANDIDATES FOR SECRETARY OF THE FACULTY David Lawrence, Associate Professor Geology I have been an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology at E.C.U. since fall 1983. In 1981-83, I was a Research Geologist at the Houston Technology Center, Gulf Oil Corp., and for 1975-81, I was Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor of Geology, at the College of Charleston, South Carolina. I have served on the Faculty Senate from 1986 to the present, the Area Studies in Latin America Committee, 1984 to present, the Library Committee 1984-87, of which I was Secretary 1984-85, and Chair 1985-86. I served as ex-officio on the Educational Policy and Planning Committee 1985-86. I currently serve on the Admissions Committee as Secretary. Belinda Lee, Assistant Professor Nursing Having reviewed the duties of the Secretary of the Faculty, as identified in the Faculty Manual, Appendix A, if elected I will fulfill these duties to the best of my ability. I am committed to active participation and involvement in University service activities. Since joining the East Carolina University faculty in 1972, I have served both the School of Nursing and the University through active committee membership and participation. I served as Faculty Senate Alternate from 1976-78, and have served as Faculty Senator since 1985.
