MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 23, 1989

The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, February 23, 1989, at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster
B-103. Members present were Buckler, Carlton, Coulter, Grossnickle, Neal, O'Rear,
Shea, Topper, Wilentz, Cain and Hogg. Members absent were Lunney, Yount and
Landry.

The minutes of February 9, 1989, were read. A request to change the title
"Worksite Health'' in the Curriculum for the BS degree in School and Community
Health Education to "Worksite Health Promotion'' was made. The minutes were
approved as amended.

Professor Manolita Buck, Foreign Languages and Literatures, presented a request to

replace SPAN 2215 and SPAN 3217; modify FREN, GERM and SPAN 4323. Teaching Second
Languages in Grades K-12; add SPAN 2101. Cultural Readings in Spanish; delete
FREN, GERM, SPAN 4319; revise BS (teaching) in French, German, and Spanish; revise
Middle Grades Education concentration in foreign language. Shea moved to accept
as amended contingent on approval by the Teacher Education Council Curriculum
Committee; Hogg seconded. The motion passed.

Professors Chuck Ziehr and Leo Zonn, Geography and Planning, presented a request
to add GEOG 5067. Geographic Information Systems I, and revise the BA in
Geography. Carlton moved to accept, Wilentz seconded. The motion passed.

Professors Bob Bernhardt and Bob Joyner, Mathematics, presented requests to revise
MATH 2127 and permit its use for general education; add MATH 3223. Teaching Math
in the Elementary Grades K-6; bank MATH 3219, 3220, 3221, 3222. Letters in support
of these proposals were presented from Keats Sparrow, English; Wilbur Castellow,
Psychology; and Bob Christian for the General College Committee. Topper moved
acceptance contingent on approval of the Teacher Education Council Curriculum
Committee; Coulter seconded. The motion passed.

Professors Y. J. Lao and Barney Kane, Environmental Health, presented the
following requests: delete EHLT 2100; add EHLT 2110. Introduction to Environmental
Health Science; change hours and prerequisites for EHLT 3350; change prerequisites
for EHLT 3351; add EHLT 3370. On-Site Wastewater Treatment and Disposal, EHLT
3371, On-Site Wastewater Treatment Laboratory; delete EHLT 3360, 3361; change
prerequisites for EHLT 3700; change title and prerequisites for EHLT 3800; delete
EHLT 3801; change title and prerequisites for EHLT 4300; add EHLT 4301.
Institutional, Recreational Sanitation, and Vectorborne Diseases Laboratory; add
EHLT 5001. Seminar in Environmental Health and EHLT 5020. Environmental
Toxicology; delete EHLT 5150, 5151; revise BS in Environmental Health; add new
minor in Environmental Health. O'Rear moved to accept as amended, Buckler
seconded. The motion passed.

deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and experience with materials
and methods appropriate for classroom work.

Laboratory and field techniques for on-site wastewater treatment.

A course designed to familiarize the student with health problems encountered
in business, industrial, and other work places. Special emphasis is placed on
the recognition and evaluation of occupational stresses and ways to prevent
disease.

3800. Solid and Hazardous Waste Management (3)

Prerequisite: Consent of departmental advisor.

An exploration of the problems associated with the collection, treatment, and
disposal of solid and hazardous wastes in the U.S. The study of the
development of federal and state legislation and regulations for solid and
hazardous waste management. Current technologies for solving waste
management problems.

Student, staff, and guest speakers on current research.

5020. Environmental Toxicology (3)

Prerequisites: EHLT 5010, 5011, or consent of instructor.

This course will examine the effect of anthropogenic and naturally occurring
toxins on the environment. Toxin sources, distribution, and bioaccumulation
will be discussed. Specific areas to be covered are pesticides, metals,
solvents, radioactive isotopes, food additives, air pollutants, and natural
plant/animal toxins.
