GRADING SYSTEM, GRADE POINTS, AND GRADE POINT AVERAGE (To replace the corresponding section on pg 46, ECU 1988-1990 Undergraduate Catalog) (Changes are underlined) A grade (quality) point system based on all hours attempted as East Carolina University is used to calculate student scholarship. The following grade symbols are currently in use for all undergraduate courses: A -- excellent, B -- good, C -- average, D -- barely passed, F -- failed (course must be repeated to secure credit), I -- incomplete (deficiency in quantity, not quality, of work), N -- audited. The grades and D may be modified by the addition of a plus or a minus (-) (the grade of will not be used). A grade of A is worth 4.0 points: a B is worth 3.0 points: a C is worth 2.0 points: a worth 1.0 points; and an F is worth 0 points. If the grade is modified by a plus then the point value is increased by 0.3 points. If the grade is modified by a minus (-), then the points value is decreased by 0.3 points. The grade points for a course are computed by multiplying the number of semester-hour credits by the point value of the course grade. No grade points are given for a grade of F, but hours attempted are recorded for each attempt of a given course. In those situations where a student has failed a given course more than one time, commencing with the second failure, the attempted hours offered for the course shall not be counted in computing the student's grade- point average if the student initiates the Multiple F Policy in the Office of the Registrar. The grade- point average is obtained by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of semester hours attempted. TO BE EFFECTIVE, FALL 19990. The graduated scale. This bill, if passed, will result in a reduction in the value of the retirement benefit for state employees. This bill will effect both active and retired employees. The bill will be strongly supported by private industry in that it gives those employees a better taxation rate Therefore, any concern expressed against this bill should be direct the House and Senate members and not through the media. I would hope that your committee would become interested and take immediate action to show your concern. I would also suggest that you make your colleagues at ECU and other campuses aware of this bill. The bill is in the Senate Finance Committee.
