Within the next two weeks, departments will receive notification of Senate
representation for 1989/90. If it is necessary for your unit to hold an
election(s), please do so and report the name(s) of the senators/alternates
to the Faculty Senate Office no later than March 1, 1989.

The Chemistry Department has elected Wayne Ayers to serve as Senator in

the absence of Robert Morrison. Myron Caspar will replace George Evans as
Alternate.

Chancellor Eakin began his remarks by reporting that the Chancellor's Forum on the
theme, ''Educational and Economic Development: The Challenge for Schools, Community
Colleges and Universities,"' held January 3 and 4, was well attended and well

received. He stated that the attendance was near 400 and two local community
groups initiated by the forum have already met. The Chanc or acknowledged the
generous financial support of CT&T and said, "I must giv igh praise to one of

your colleagues, Dr. Bertie Fearing, for her splendid direction of the Forum

program.'' He informed the Senate that plans are already underway for another
forum next year on a related theme.

Dr. Eakin reported that legislative review of the 1989-91 biennial budget

proposals has begun in Raleigh and that he would be appearing before the
appropriate committees shortly. The Joyner Library expansion is ECU's highest
priority for capital improvements funding.

While on the subject of improvements, the Chancellor stated that campus street
repairs would commence at the end of the spring semester and that bids have been
let for parking lot expansions.

Undergraduate admission reports indicate a strong interest in ECU and that the
number of applications received is well-ahead of the number received by the same
time last year, Eakin related. He expressed the belief that the new screening
process in place this year would result in higher average test scores for the
incoming freshmen.

Chancellor Eakin announced that a video conference entitled "Myths, Models, and
Realities: Creating a Campus of the Future'’ will be held on February 7, and he
recommended it to the faculty. This is organized by Blake Price, Director,

Computing and Information Systems, and Sue Hodges, Director, Planning and
Institutional Research.

At this point, the Chancellor, with the permission of the Chair, presented Dave
Hart, Athletic Director, to address the matter of Proposition 42: Mr. Hart stated
that Proposition 42 eliminates the partial qualifier from Proposition 48.
Proposition 48, he reminded the Senate, requires a 700 minimum on the SAT and a
2.0 GPA in a core curriculum. He related that the Academic Committee and the
Presidential Commission of the NCAA were against receiving "42" while a five-year
