EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES OF JANUARY 12, 1989 The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, January 12, 1989, at 1:30 p.-m., in Brewster B-103. Members present were Carlton, Coulter, Grossnickle, Neal, O'Rear, Topper, Wilentz, Yount, and Cain. Members absent: Buckler, Lunney, Shea, Landry and Hogg. The minutes of November 10, 1988, were approved as read. Protessor Byron Coulter, Physics, requested approval (1) to change the prerequisites for PHYS 3516, 3517, 3518 to "Consent of department chair and of instructor"; (2) to change the prerequisites of PHYS 3716, 3717, 3718 to "Consent of department chair and of instructor"' and to add the following statement to the course description, "May be repeated, not to exceed a total of 9 s.h."; (3) to change the prerequisite of PHYS 4080, 4081 to "PHYS 2260, 2270". Coulter moved to accept, Grossnickle seconded. The motion passed. Professor Larry Hagler, Accounting, requested substitution on page 185, first column, second paragraph, of the following: "Students desiring the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Degree must earn a grade of C or better to satisfy any Accounting course prerequisite."" Also requested was a change in title and description of ACCT 3731 to “Advanced and Nonprofit Accounting", “Accounting for business combinations, not-for-profit organizations, and international operations."; and change in title of ACCT 4821 to ‘Advanced Auditing." Grossnickle moved to accept, Wilentz seconded. The motion passed. Professor Robert Muzzarelli, Speech, Language and Auditory Pathology, requested approval of a course revision and a new course. Course credit for SLAP 4225 is to be changed from 3 semester hours to 2 semester hours. This would change degree requirements on page 157. Required SLAP courses would be reduced to 45 s.h. and electives would increase to 17 s.h. SLAP 5565. Seminar in Augmentative Communication is a new undergraduate course developed for SLAP 6111. Carlton moved acceptance, Topper seconded. The motion passed. Professor Connie Mellon, Library and Information Studies, requested approval to increase credit from one semester hour to two semester hours for LIBS 5100. Introduction to Library and Information Studies. O'Rear moved acceptance, Wilentz seconded. The motion passed. Professor Brad Foley, Music, presented the following requests: (1) approval of a new major in the Bachelor of Music program--B. M. Music Theatre major; (2) approval of new courses MUSC 1018, 1028. Music Reading and Fundamentals for the Non-Music Major I, II, and MUSC 2008. Theatre Score Analysis; (3) approval of course revisions for MUSC 5796. Opera History, whereby credit would change from 2 s.h. to 3 s.h. and prerequisites would be deleted; (4) approval to cross-list MUSC 3055 with THEA 3055. History of the American Musical Theatre, with faculty from both Music and Theatre Arts teaching the course. Professor Edgar Loessin, Theatre Arts, presented the following requests: (1) removal of THEA 3055. American Musical Theatre, from the course bank, changing the title to "History of the American Musical Theatre", and cross-listing with MUSC 3055; (2) change prerequisites for THEA 3090 to THEA 1010, 1020, and for SPCH 4002 and 4003 add "Prerequisite: THEA 2020 or consent of instructor"; (3) Change BFA degree in Theatre Arts, Professional Acting Concentration, by adding THEA 2006 and 2007 as required courses; (4) change BA degree in Theatre Arts by deleting BCST 2014 and adding THEA 2035 as required courses; (5) Approve a Musical Theatre concentration for the BFA Degree in Theatre Arts. The proposais from Music and Theatre Arts were joined. Topper moved acceptance as amended, Carlton seconded. The motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 2:45. Prerequisites: Accepted as a major in SLAP the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge with practical application for speech-language and hearing impaired individuals. Seminar in Augmentative Communication (3) (formerly SLAP 6111) Two and one-half lecture and one laboratory hour per week. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Designed to provide an understandind and working knowledge of the interdisciplinary approach to augmentative communication. Emphasis is on the team approach including discussion of and experience with patients requiring use of augmentative communication systems.
