EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY FACULTY SENATE ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING APRIL 13, 1988 The Faculty Senate held its 1988/89 Organizational Meeting on Wednesday, April 13, 1988, in Mendenhall Student Center, Room 244. Agenda Item I. Call to Order Conner Atkeson, Chair, called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. The Chair announced that the following would serve as tellers for the elections: David Kopanski (Aerospace), Susan McDaniel (Biology), Frank Murphy (Philosophy), Ralph Scott (Academic Library Services), Larry Hough (Political Science), and Stella Daugherty (Math). Corrections to the Senate Agenda and Attachment 3 were made as follows: III.A. Report of the Nominating Committee for Senate Officers will be made by Ken Wilson, Chair of the Nominating Committee. III.C. Attachment 3 incorrectly indicates that Committee on Committees members Hines, Kledaras, and Sadler, have terms which expire in 1990. The terms of these three members expire in 1989. The Senators were reminded that the third candidate for the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Phillip Thomas, will be interviewed by the Faculty Senate and Committee Chairs on April 19, 1988, 11:15-12:15 in Nursing 101. The Senate accepted a ruling made by the Faculty Governance Committee that the Representative of the Administrative Council is considered an ex-officio member of the Faculty Senate and is not eligible to vote in the election of Senate Officers. Agenda Item II. Roll Call Professor Jim Joyce, 1987/88 Senate Secretary, verified attendance. Those absent were Whelan (Technology), Donohue (Theatre Arts), Bernhardt (Nursing), Pories (Medicine), Cunningham (Medicine), Schwartz (Music). Ex-officio members absent were Chancellor Eakin, Vice Chancellor Bloodworth, Vice Chancellor Laupus, Dean Ryan, Emily Boyce (Faculty Assembly Representative). Alternates present were Woodside for Davis (Math), Moskop for Dudek (Medicine), Swanson for Parkerson (History), Anderson for Powers (Education), Israel for King (HPERS). Joyce announced that Charles Singhas has been elected to the Faculty Senate as the representative from the Department of Biology. He fills a vacancy with term expiring 1989. Susan McDaniel has been elected to serve as the alternate, with term expiring 1989. Agenda Item III. Reports of the Committees A. Report of the Nominating Committee for Senate Officers, Ken Wilson, Reporting Wilson (Sociology & Anthropology) called the Senators' attention to the slate of nominees for the office of Chair. Following a brief statement by each of the candidates, an election was held as follows: Conner Atkeson, History 27 Douglas McMillan, English 18 i With 45 ballots being cast, Conner Atkeson was declared the winner. Wilson announced the candidates for the offices of Vice Chair and Secretary. There being no nominations from the floor for either office, two separate elections were held with 45 ballots being cast in each. Results were as follows: Vice Chair: Charles Duckett, Medicine 13 Jo Ann Jones, English 32 Secretary: James Joyce, Physics 36 Pat Terrell, Education 9 Jones was declared Vice Chair and Joyce was declared Secretary. B. Report of Committee on Committees, Holly Mathews, Reporting Mathews (Sociology & Anthropology), Chair of the Committee, directed the Senators' attention to the slate of nominees for the Academic and Administrative Committee vacancies. She noted a change in the slate of nominees for the Unit Code Screening Committee. Since Emily Boyce had asked that her name be withdrawn, Eugenia Zallen (Home Economics) was named as the nominee. Bob Woodside (Math) indicated that there was a mistake in the listing of expiring terms on the General College Committee. The listing should read: Terms Expiring: Nominees: Frances Daugherty, Art Frances Daugherty, Art Bertie Fearing, English Robert Hursey, Math Ione Ryan, Counseling Center Henry Jacoby, Philosophy (The names of Fearing and Ryan had been switched on the original copy.) With these changes made, Mathews moved acceptance of the slate of nominees. The Chair reviewed the list of nominees presented by the Committee and called for nominations from the floor. There being none, nominees were elected to committees by acclamation as follows: Academic Committees: (Committee elections are for three-year terms, unless otherwise indicated. Elections were held for each with results as follows: -Curriculum Committee: William Buckler, Geography eW Ernest Habrichs, Art 14 Janice Shea, Home Economics ao Sarah Edmiston, Art 22 (nominated from the floor) Herb Carlton, Political Science 29 (nominated from the floor) With 45 ballots cast, Buckler, Shea, and Carlton were declared winners. -Educational Policies & Planning Committee: Ken Wilson, Sociology & Anthro. 26 Bob Hursey, Math 20 (nominated from the floor) With 46 ballots cast, Wilson was declared the winner. -Faculty Computer Committee: Robert Morrison, Chemistry 37 Karl Wuensch, Psychology es Eugene Hughes, Business 23 (nominated from the floor) With 47 ballots cast, Morris and Wuensch were declared the winners. Administrative Committees: Holly Mathews moved acceptance of the slate of Administrative Committee nominees. The Chair called for nominations from the floor for each of the Administrative Committees. C. Election of Committee on Committees Chair Atkeson announced that there were three vacancies to be filled with each term expiring in 1990. D. Election of the 1988/89 Agenda Committee Nominations for the five vacancies were as follows: Artemis Kares, Academic Library Services William Spickerman, Math Doug McMillan, English Madge Chamness, Allied Health Sciences Pat Terrell, Education There being no further nominations, Wilson moved acceptance of the slate. The slate was accepted on a voice vote. The Chair wished the Senators a delightful exam period and a wonderful summer.
