Douglas J. McMillan, Department of English Douglas J. McMillan, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Department of English; Ph.D. (University of Maryland at College Park, 1963). The 1988-89 academic year will be my fourth year as a Senator and my twentieth year as a faculty member at East Carolina. In addition to having served on almost every committee in the Department of English, I have, over the years, served on numerous Senate committees [e.g., Agenda (Chair), Nominating (Chair), Libraries (Secretary and Chair), General College (Secretary and Chair), Educational Policies and Planning, Academic Integrity Board (Chair)]. Currently I am Chair of the Graduate Curriculum Committee, the Career Education Committee, the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Committee, and the English Graduate Committee. I am committed personally to a balance between teaching, research, and service, and I try to contribute fairly and consistently in each area. I believe in shared governance and see a balance between the faculty and the administration. We the faculty should share in governance, not dictate. So too should the administration share and not dictate. A charter member of ECU's chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, I have served as Chapter President and am the National Historian. And I am a Bibliographer for the Annual International Bibliography of the Modern Language Association. I would willingly take on the duties and honor of Chair of the Faculty Senate. Attachment 1, Page 2 Candidates for the Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate Charles Duckett, School of Medicine The nomination for the office of Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate is an expression of trust that carries with it a number of responsibilities which I can accept with sincerity and humility, if elected by my academic colleagues. Following a period of time as an alternate, I have served continuously since 1984 as a representative to the Senate. it has been my privilege to serve as a member of the Chancellor Search Committee and for the past two years as Chairman of the Promotion and Tenure Committee in our School of Medicine. These, as well as other responsibilities at ECU, have allowed me the opportunity to develop insight into the unique importance of the University, the interdependence of its units, and the necessity for a strong and active faculty. I am committed to continued improvement in our academic community for the benefit of our students and the public now and in the future. If elected, I further commit to those responsibilities of the Vice Chair of our Faculty Senate. Jo Ann Jones, Department of English In addition to being Assistant Professor of English, I am Assistant Dean of the General College. During my long tenure at ECU, I have served in a number of capacities which have given me the opportunity to interact with faculty and administrators, not the least of which has been serving as a Faculty Senator for seven terms (August 1988, beginning of eighth term). My commitment to faculty participation in University governance is reflected in my extensive committee work both at the departmental and university levels.
