None A brief statement of committee organization, subcommittees, research activities, An Appeals Subcommittee was appointed to hear appeals from students who are denied financial aid by the Office of Financial Aid. A subcommittee was appointed to make recommendations regarding the Lillian Jenkins Scholarship. List of committee accomplishments including recommendations made to agencies other than the Faculty Senate. Heard appeals from four scholarship athletes and in each instance supported the recommendation made by the Athletic Department that the grants be terminated. Approved Jenkins scholarships but recommended that no long range guidelines be developed. Citation of the resolution numbers of Senate resolutions that originated with the committee. Ap Tih, 25.51.9682 Clarification of Appendix C.-letter to all faculty in reference to the evaluation of teaching Specific Instruction to the Committee by the Faculty Senate The Faculty Senate charged the TEC to work on the recommendations passed in Resolution #88-45. Committee Organization and Activities A. Committee Chair was Christa Reiser, Vice Chair was John Tilley, and Secretary was Randall Renegar. Subcommittees: 1. Survey Subcommittee: Reiser (Chair), Grove, Tilley. 2. Data Analysis Subcommittee: Shine (Chair), Campbell, Spickerman, & Tuten. 3. Teaching Resources Subcommittee: Mellon (Chair), Jones, Poretta, Rebescher, Reiser. 4. Program Subcommittee: Knoke (Chair), Campbell, Mellon, Shine. 5. Videotaping Subcommittee: Dudley (Chair), Knoke. 6 Workshop Subcommittee: Knoke,(Chair), Campbell, Catlett, Dudley, Renegar, Tilley. 7. Problem Areas in Teaching Subcommittee: Bailey, Jones, Reiser. VE Committee Accomplishments A. Revised and distributed (to all faculty) flyers announcing the availability and desirability of the TEC videotaping service; approved a form letter to unit heads informing them that one of their faculty has been videotaped. Results of the survey regarding implementation of the "seven principles" were compiled and reported to the Faculty Senate as mandated by Faculty Senate Resolution #88-13. Committee recommendations were endorsed by the Senate (Resolution #88-45). The booklet, "A Guide to Evaluating Teaching for Promotion and Tenure" was distributed to all unit and department heads (through the VCAA's office). Attendance of TEC Representatives at Meetings/Workshops 1. Campbell attended the Lilly Conference on College Teaching at Miami University (Ohio) on November 4-6, 1988. Our annual workshop speaker was identified at this meeting. Documents and proceedings & of the conference are part of TEC reference materials. - Dudley attended a seminar on "Using Computer Technology in Teaching." - Shine, as designated representative of the ECU campus attended a one-day seminar on the evaluation of university teaching at the University of NC at Greensboro. . Reiser (along with Don Bailey and Madge Chamness) will represent ECU at the Colloquy on College Teaching at Western Carolina University in July, 1989. Planned and conducted TEC workshop on March 17, 1989, featuring Dr. Harvey Brightman who spoke on "Teaching Students in Ways They Learn Best."' An administrators' luncheon was also held where Dr. Brightman explored "Multiple Paths to Excellence." The TEC sent two documents to the "Strengths and Weaknesses Committee:" one urged the establishment of a full-time Director of Instructional Development and Evaluation; the other identified a host of teaching related problem areas. A letter recommending the position of Director of Instructional Development and Evaluation was also sent to the "Institutional Values Committee." Initiated Action to amend the TEC's charge regarding the annual Alumni Association Teaching Awards. Developed an explanation sheet to accompany the Student Opinion of Instruction Survey as mandated by Faculty Senate resolution #88-45. Senate Resolutions Faculty Resolution #88-45 XI. Resolve the issue of the student evaluation form and the proper statistics to analyze data. Continue efforts to encourage the use of additional methods of evaluating teaching. Investigate the possibility of holding a workshop for Deans and Chairs regarding evaluation for promotion and tenure. Plan a meeting with Jim Smith regarding the issue of pre/post tests Report on the Carolina Colloquy on College Teaching. Preview tapes addressing the problem of prejudice in the classroom.
