BRIEF STATEMENT OF COMMITTEE ORGANIZATION, SUBCOMMITTEES; RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, ETC. The Student Recruitment and Retention Committee is a Faculty Senate Committee charged with matters relating to recruitment and retention of students. The Committee reviews policies governing recruitment; orientation; and retention of students. Members include faculty; representatives of appropriate administrative officials, and a student. Subcommittees are appointed as needed: In 1988/89 they were: 1) Subcommittee on Availability of Courses; to follow up the Senate response to Resolution 88-31 (Cotter, Mayberry) - Work completed following meeting held on 10/6/88 (see VII.1). 2) Subcommittee on Advisings to plan a meeting of General College Committee, Task Force on Academic Preparation; and SRRC with Chancellor Eakin (Mayberry; Muller) - Work completed following meeting with Chancellor on 2/15/89 (see VII.2). Research activities that were planned toward the end of the academic year and will carry into next year were: 1) Study ECU statistics on student retention (Cotter, Mayberry); 2) Draft a proposal for employing paid faculty advisors (Cotter; Houston) § 3) Survey faculty attitudes toward advising (W. Smith). VII. COMMITTEE ACCOMPLISHMENTS; INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS MADE TO AGENCIES OTHER THAN THE FACULTY SENATE. 1 — Organized a meeting (10/6/88) on availability of coursess with representatives from faculty and administrations to follow up oan Senate response to Resolution 88-31. SRRC disposition: Information reported to C. Atkeson (12/1/88) that the ECU administration is aware of the problems of availability of courses and has instituted corrective action (for examples opening more sections). 2 —- Met with Chancellor Eakin and Acting Vice-Chancellor Bloodwarth in joint meeting with General College Committee and Task Force on Academic Preparation (2/15/89) to discuss the administration’s views on advising as it concerns student retention. SRRC disposition: Report to Faculty Senate (3/28/87) for information. General College Committee and SRRC will undertake research activities in 1989/90 in response to Chancellor’s invitation for recommendations. SRRC recommendations to Chancellor Eakins "Recommendations for University Policy on Advising,” is attached to this report. 3 —- Recommended jointly with General College Committee that Acting Vice-Chancellor Bloodworth encourage unit heads to include advising as a part of the faculty evaluation process and that advising be made an explicit category on the "Individual Faculty Evaluation Form." Sent at the close of the academic year; 1988/89. 4 — Gene Owens and James Pinkney (committee member 1787/88) attended Second National Conference on Student Retention. 5 - The Committee heard a report on EDUC 1000, The Freshman and the University, from Don Joyner; course instructor. VIII.CITATION OF THE RESOLUTION NUMBERS OF SENATE RESOLUTIONS IX. X. XI. THAT ORIGINATED WITH THE COMMITTEE. None. PROPOSALS AND/OR BUSINESS TO BE CARRIED OVER TO NEXT YEAR. 1 -— Study of student retention. 2 — Study of paid faculty advisors. 3 - Study of faculty attitudes toward advising. EVALUATION OF THE COMMITTEE. A. Structure: The Committee on Committees has been studying three proposals affecting SRRC: Restructuring of committees to form a Recruitment and Admissions Committee and a Retention and Course Drop Appeals Committees; adding the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs as an ex-officio member (if the restructuring is not approved); and adding a representative from Cooperative Education as an ex-officio member . Signed: Chairperson 4 Meet Secretary STUDENT RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 15, 1989 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY POLICY ON ADVISING The Student Recruitment and Retention Committee recommends that the East Carolina University Administration adopt the following policies regarding advising: 1. The issue of student advising needs to be a priority point of consideration in the University's strategic planning process. 2; The course EDUC 1000, The Freshman and the University, should be expanded to the point that it is offered to all students. a Professional advisors should be paid to work with undecided majors and the business major overload. 4. Faculty should be allowed to opt to be evaluated on teaching and any two of the following expectations and contributions: advising, research, and service. ¥. Long-term consideration should be given to the concept of developing a more centralized approach to the offering of academic and career services. Adopted in committee, January 12, 1989.
