Harris, Jacoby, Layton 4 Apr. 89 Hursey, Jacoby, Layton Date of reports to the Faculty Senate during the year. 28 March 89 Specific instructions, if any, given to the committee by the Faculty Senate, other than those found in the committee's Constitutional charge. none A brief statement of committee organization, subcommittees, research activities, etc. Two subcommittees were carried over from the previous year: academic advising and faculty opinion of general education requirements. The former was active with organizing the joint meeting with the Chancellor and other committees (15 February 1989). Also, it's members continue as part of the General College Advisor Recognition Committee. The subcommittee on general education requirements summarized the survey of 1987-88 and disbanded. List of committee accomplishments including recommendations made to agencies other than the Faculty Senate. : The Committee advised the Credits Committee not to alter the current drop period policy. Much effort was directed toward the 15 February meeting with the Chancellor. An extensive list of "givens, questions, and concerns” concerning academic advising was made in conjunction with SRRC and the Task Force on Academic Preparation. The three groups met with the Chancellor, W. Bloodworth and R. Edwards for a 1.5 hour meeting. Subsequent efforts to improve advising involved a letter to Bloodworth requesting that he request unit heads to explicitly acknowledge advising in tenure, promotion and salary decisions and to include advising as a category on the faculty evaluation form. Flans were discussed for paid advisers and for early meetings between new students and advisers. We summarized results of the faculty survey of general education requirements. Opinion results did not justify further action to drastically change requirements to overcome faculty dissatisfaction. Math and English proficiencies were given greatest concern. The Committee recommended to the University Curriculum Committee that MATH 2127 be listed as a potential general education requirement. Acting on behalf of the Committee, Christian contacted Dean Ryan to determine if General College advising was considered in the College of Arts and Sciences Criteria for Promotion and Tenure. The Dean assured Christian it was recognized as a subcategory of general academic consulting and academic advising. The Committee is represented within the General College Adviser Recognition Committee which now gives two awards per year. The Committee will consider developing a student opinion sur -ey of general education requirements. The Committee will consider the proposal by R. Hursey that six credit hours of general education may be given for foreign language unde specific conditions, More work will be done to improve academic advising. We are expecting strong support from the administration based on our meeting with the Chancellor, The Committee will be involved in further developments concerning second majors.
