CURRICULUM COMMITTEE March 24, 1988 The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, March 24, 1988, at 2:00 p.m., B103 Brewster. Members present were Grossnickle, Neal, Carlton, Topper, Yount, Cain (ex-officio). Sexauer (ex-officio). Lunney joined at 2:35 p.m.; Coulter at 2:40 p.m. Members absent were Muller, Steele, Wilentz and Keeter. Minutes of February 25 meeting were approved with following amendments: To catalogue statement for both MATH 0001 and 0045 add statement of "3 contact hours per week."' Add word "Math" in front of “placement test" in 3rd line of description of MATH 0001. Dean Uhr and Professor Gene Hughes representing the School of Business requested a change in the prerequisite sequence for the School of Business major courses and the approval of the elective course MGMT 3342, Leadership, Organizational Change and Development. Clarified that change would go into effect immediately if approved by senate.'/ Motion to approve both requests by Topper; second by Sexauer. Questions were raised concerning overlap between ASIP 4200,4201 and 5200,5201. Motion to separate two requests by Coulter; second by Carlton. Motion passed. Motion to approve ITEC 5290 by Coulter; second by Neal. Motion to send ASIP 5200,5201 back to department with recommendation to consider combining with ASIP 4200,4201 by Sexauer; second by Topper. Professors Bob Muzzarelli and Meta Downes presented the Department of Speech, language and Auditory Pathology request to revise BS SLAP by (1) add SLAP 3335 Junior Clinicianship; (2) delete 3225; and (3) change prerequisites for SLAP 4225 and 4990. Clarified the repeating of course for credit by adding "may be repeated 1 time for credit with consent of Director of Clinical Experiences.'' Amended prerequisite statement; add "at least" before 2.5 grade average. Motion to accept as amended by Carlton; second by Neal. Motion passed. Professor Jannis Shea representing School of Home Economics requested the revision of BS in Child Development and Family Relations by adding CDFR 4998,4999 Preschool Practicum and deleting 4994,4995. Motion to approve by Yount; second by Neal. Motion passed. Dean Coble, Professor Nancy Mayberry, and Vice Chancellor Meyer representing the General College Committee, Career Education Committee and Recruitment and Retention Committee presented the request for approval of the elective course EDUC 1000 The Freshman and the University. Questions were raised concerning University credit of a remedial course, placement of the course and the necessity for the course. Clarified that it is "not designed to be a remedial course but a survival course" to give students who enter the University knowledge and skills related to study habits and behaviors needed to get the most out of the University setting. Intended for freshmen only. Credit would increase enrollment. Proposal is for 3 year study to see impact course will have on retention. Recommendation made concerning prerequisite statement accepted. Motion to approve as amended for offering through the 1990-91 school year by Neal; second by Carlton. Motion passed. Deans Coble and Ryan representing the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education requested a change in the general education requirements for teaching degrees. General College Committee telephoned support of this change to chair of Curriculum Committee. Change would make general education science requirements for education majors the same as for other majors. Motion to approve by Neal; second by Sexauer, motion passed. The next item of business was related to a memo by Acting Vice Chancellor Bloodworth concerning general education hours being used to satisfy double major requirements. Apparently there is a difference in what has been in practice but is not written and what is now proposed as written policy. Chair of Committee will draft response to Acting Vice Ghancellor conveying recommendations of this Committee. Motion by Neal that in fall, all units sending proposals to Curriculum Committee will use the course proposal format designed by Bill Buckler and currently being used by College or Arts and Sciences. Have taken or be enrolled in SLAP 3025, 3050, and 3110, and consent of the Department's Director of Clinical Experiences.
