Resolution Regarding Availability of Courses for Registration (Attachment 3) Teaching Effectiveness Committee, Frank Rabey (Chair) Resolution Regarding Funding for Attendance of National-Level Conference Devoted to College Teaching (Attachment 4) Teaching Grants Committee, Bonnie Duldt (Chair) 1988 Summer Stipends and 1988/89 Teaching Grant Awards Unit Code Screening Committee, Don Sexauer (Chair) Approval of Unit Codes for the following Units: School of Art Health Sciences Library Department of History Department of Library & Information Studies (Codes are available for review in the Faculty Senate Office) Business Resolution Regarding 'Lengthy Drop Period" Donald Parkerson, Dept. of History (Attachment 5) Attachment 1 PROPOSED EMERITUS POLICY The Faculty Affairs Committee recommends the adoption of the following policy either as a new “Appendix T" or an amendment to "Part IV" of the Faculty Manual: Upon receiving written confirmation of intent to retire by a tenured faculty member with ten or more year of full-time service to East Carolina University, the unit head shall notify the unit personnel committee which, in turn, shall act on granting the retiree emeritus status. Their decision shall then be forwarded to the unit head and other appropriate administrative officers in the same manner as other personnel recommendations for their concurrence or nonconcurrence. This policy shall be retroactive for all retirements during the 1987/88 academic year or as stipulated by the Chancellor. Attachment 2 RECOMMENDATION REGARDING STUDENT WORKLOAD/COURSELOAD While there may be exceptions to this guideline, students who work more than 20 hours per week should not carry more than 9 hours of course work; students who work 15-20 hours per week should not carry more than 12 hours of course work. NOTE: The Committee recommends that the guideline be placed in the ECU Undergraduate Catalogue under the Course Load section currently on page 60 of the 86-88 bulletin. Attachment 3 RESOLUTION REGARDING AVAILABILITY OF COURSES FOR REGISTRATION Whereas, numerous transfer students are closed out of general education and cognate courses, or courses required for the bachelor's degree; and Whereas, numerous continuing undergraduates are being closed out of both their first choice and alternates, especially in the humanities; and Whereas, these situations have a negative impact on student retention, student morale, the image of the institution's seriousness of purpose in regard to general education, and the cohesiveness and direction of a student's curriculum; Be It Resolved, That the Faculty Senate urge the administration to study and recommend steps necessary to remedy this situation. These steps should not detract from the overall obligations of the University's faculty with respect to research and creative activity, service, and education. NOTE: Approved by the Student Recruitment and Retention Committee on March 15, 1988, with additional approval of the General College Committee. Attachment 4 RESOLUTION REGARDING FUNDING FOR TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS CONFERENCE Whereas, In order to carry out its charge, properly, the Teaching Effectiveness Committee must acquire and maintain expertise on teaching methodologies, and develop and conduct programs for the promotion of teaching excellence; and Whereas, Interaction with faculty representatives at national conferences devoted to college teaching promotes awareness of major educational concerns and issues; and Whereas, Attendance at such conferences can result in identifying effective speakers who can be invited to participate at ECU's Faculty Development Workshops conducted to foster improvement of faculty development and instruction. Be It Resolved, That the Faculty Senate recommend that the Chancellor include in the annual operating budget of the Teaching Effectiveness Committee the funds needed to enable two faculty members of the Teaching Effectiveness Committee to attend at least one national-level conference devoted to college teaching. NOTE: Motion to this effect approved by the Teaching Effectiveness Committee on March 18, 1988. Attachment 5 RESOLUTION REGARDING LENGTHY DROP PERIOD Whereas, East Carolina University is attempting to improve academically; and Whereas, A lengthy drop period is contrary to that objective; and Whereas, A lengthy drop period leads to poor allocation of scarce university resources; Be It Resolved, That the academic drop period be the first seven calendar days of the semester for all classes taught that semester.
