ECU CURRICULUM COMMITTEE February 25, 1988 The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, February 25, 1988, at 2:00 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were Grossnickle, Wilentz, Neal, Coulter, Keeter, Topper, Lunney, Muller, Carlton (joined at 2:30), and Sexauer (ex-officio). Members absent were Steele, Yount and Cain (ex-officio). The minutes of February 11, 1988, were approved with the following changes: Page 1, paragraph 5 - "(3) changes in credit hours for MATH 0001 from 2 to 3" should read '(3) changes in credit hours for MATH 0001 from 0 to 3". Professor Jerry Lotterhos of the Department of Community Health presented the following requests: (1) approval of the following elective courses, COHE 4610. Individual Strategies for Community Health Education; COHE 4620. Group Strategies for Community Health Education; COHE 4621. Group Strategies Lab; COHE 5002. Maternal and Child Health Education; (2) approval of a proposed minor in Alcohol/Drug Studies. Prerequisites and catalogue description for COHE 4621 were modified at a previous meeting. Motion to approve package as amended by Topper; second by Muller. Motion passed. Professors Bob Bernhardt, Stella Daugherty and Bob Woodside presented the requests for the Mathematics Department. Requests were for (1) changes in credit hours for MATH 0001 from 0 to 3 (for institutional credit only), (2) change catalogue description for MATH 0001, and (3) change catalogue description for MATH 0045 (for institutional credit only). Clarification of modifications in catalogue descriptions since February 11, 1988, meeting were made. Motion to approve on a temporary basis (through Fall Semester, 1989) by Muller; second by Coulter. This time frame would allow for the development of a policy statement concerning credit for remedial work to be developed. Motion to amend by changing credit hours of MATH 0001 from 0 to 2 and MATH 0045 from 3 to 2 by Coulter; second by Carlton. Motion passed. Contact hours for MATH 0001 and MATH 0045 would remain unchanged from current number. Motion as amended passed. Grossnickle called for comments to be included in the annual report. Committee discussed possible actions to take relative to the development of a statement concerning credit for remedial work. Active deliberation on this question to be postponed until Fall Semester, 1988. Meeting adjourned at 3:16. Emphasis is on strategies for facilitating the effectiveness of group interaction, on identification of training needs, and on steps in planning, implementing and evaluating group educational experiences such as workshops, conferences, short courses, and community meetings. This course is appropriate for any student preparing for a career in the health professions. 4621. Group Strategies Lab (0) 2 hours laboratory per week Prerequisites: PSYC 3221 Co-requisites: COHE 4620 Health education laboratory to design and deliver health education materials and educational activities. 5002. Maternal and Child Health Education (3) 3 lecture hours per week Prerequisites: BIOL 2130,2131; COHE 3010,3020 Provide the community health professional with the theoretical base and appropriate education strategies for delivery of community health education programs including basic population concepts and measures, emphasizing demographic epidemiological indicators of health and social status of women and children; analysis of prevailing social policies as they relate to maternal and child health; and federal policies affecting children and families. 243 Under “Alcoholism Training Program" add the following statement: "A minor in Alcohol/Drug Studies is available and requirements are listed on page 250." Will not satisfy the general education mathematics requirement, certification, or degree requirements. 0045. General College Mathematics (2) Designed to prepare the student for the traditional course in college algebra. Topics covered include sets, real numbers, algebraic expressions, fractions, linear equations, special products and factors, and graphing. May not be taken by students who have successfully completed any of the following courses: MATH 0001, 1063, 1065, 1074, 1075, 1085, 2119, 2171, or who have passed the math placement test. Will not satisfy the general education mathematics requirement, certification, or degree requirements.
