CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
FEBRUARY 11, 1988
The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, February 11, 1988, at 2:00 p.m. in Brewster
B-103. Members present were Steele, Carlton, Neal, Muller, Topper, Grossnickle,
Yount, Lunney, Cain (ex-officio), Sexauer (ex-officio) and Wilentz joined at 3:15
(class until then). Members absent were Coulter and Keeter.

The minutes of November 12, 1987 were approved with the following changes:
Minutes: Page 1, paragraph 9 - "...inclusion of humanities core is logical."
(move is"). Page 3, paragraph 4 - should be LSS 3220, not LSS 3210.

Catalogue Copy: Page 2, in 1. Core courses, add POLS prefix before 3265. Page 3,
third listing should be MANF 5100, not ELEC 5100. Page 4, first notation for page
280, delete "Under Foundation Courses"; should read "In section on..."". Page 4,
second notation for page 280, add "In Foundation Courses Section" to beginning of
first sentence. Page 5, page placement for Art 2070 should be page 296. Page 5,
listing on Art History, page 293 should read "ART 1905 or 1910 and 1906,1907 are
prerequisites for...'' Page 5, prerequisites for ART 2900 et al should read "ART

1905 or 1910 and 1906,1907.

Professors Betty Reynolds and E. Messler representing Nursing requested approval
of changes in the biology requirements for the BSN. Letter of support from
Charles Bland, Biology read. Proposed change is to require BIOL 1050 and
2130,2131 instead of BIOL 2140,41 and 2150,51. Clarification of needed changes in
Nursing courses prerequisites. Motion to approve as amended by Cain; seconded by
Carlton. Motion passed.

EDUC 1000 withdrawn from agenda by department.

Professors Bob Bernhardt, Stella Daugherty and Bob Woodside presented Math Dept.
requests. Visitors present for this agenda item were Jim McGee and Marion Sykes
from Continuing Education. Requests were (1) approval of CSCI 3800, Introduction
to Computer Graphics as new elective course; (2) change in prerequisite for MATH
5031 from MATH 3256 and 3307 to MATH 3228,2584 or equivalent, or consent of
instructor; (3) changes in credit hours for MATH 0001 from 2 to 3; (4) change in
catalogue description of MATH 0045. Professor Bernhardt clarified that no new
hardware would be required for CSCI 3800 and that verbal support has been given by
Computer Center personnel. Clarification of changes in prerequisites for MATH
5031 are to make course more accessible. Professor Woodside clarified that credit
for MATH 0001 would not count for degree requirements or general education credit.
Part of the intent is to encourage attendance and motivation by awarding q.p.'s
and a grade that is reflected on grade report. Motion to approve first two
proposals by Steele; second by Muller. Motion passed.

Motion to approve item #3 by Lunney; second by Sexauer. Discussion as to number
of credit hours and awarding of q.p.'s but no credit toward requirements for
graduation. Motion to amend by reducing credit for 3 to 1 credit hour by Topper;
second by Neal. Motion failed. Motion to amend by changing credit to 2 hours by
Topper; second by Yount. Motion failed. Motion to postpone item until next
meeting by Neal; second by Wilentz. Motion passed.

Grossnickle moved to remove PHIL 5282, Mathematical Logic from Curriculum Bank.
Department plans to offer 1988-89. Second by Yount. Motion passed.

Grossnickle announced that Graduate Curriculum Committee has made some changes in
format for course proposals. Please review and make suggestions as to whether we
want to adopt same format changes.

 
Committee discussed need to consider a policy statement concerning credit for
remedial work. Has been discussed previously but no action take. Committee will
discuss further at next meeting. Meeting adjourned at 4:08 p.m.
