CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES - OCTOBER 8, 1987 The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, October 8, 1987, at 1:00 p.m. in Brewster B103. Qierrers present were: Steele, Carlton, Neal, Wilentz, Topper, Grossnickle, Yount, Cain (ex-officio) and Sexauer (ex-officio). Absent: Keeter, Lunney, Muller The minutes of Sept. 24, 1987, were approved with the following changes: PHYS 4326 and 4560, prerequisites should read: PHYS 2260, 2270 not 2360, 2370; Add MUSC 1665, 2665, 3665 and 4665 (Women's Glee Club) to courses to be banked under motion by Grossnickle on page 2. JUST 3500 should be titled Principles of Criminal Law and 3501 should be titled Criminal Procedure. For JUST 3500 and 3501 change prerequisite to read: "JUST 1000, social work major, criminal justice major or consent of instructor." Substitute following paragraph for previous paragraph regarding Business: Professor Wheatley, Business, presented the request to revise the BSBA (Marketing). Requested substitution of MKTG 4732 (Consumer Behavior) for MKTG 4352 (Selling and Sales Management) in the Retailing Management concentration. Also requested that the Marketing Management elective hours be raised from 9 s.h. to 12 s.h. and add in MKTG 4462 as one of the distribution electives to choose from. Keeter moved approval of the course and the change in hours. Seconded by Wilentz. The motion carried. Coulter brought error in March minutes of last year to Committee's attention. PHYS 4716 and 4717 were deleted but not listed in minutes. Professor O'Neil, Gartman and Denton of Social Work presented request to revise BS in Criminal Justice. Students will be required to select one course with minority group content and one course with women's content. Motion to approve change as amended by Wilentz. Carlton seconded. Motion carried. Professor Loessin representing Theatre Arts requested approval of new elective course DNCE 070 (Fundamentals of Tap Dance). If accepted, also requests change in prerequisite for DNCE 072 and PHYE 1115 to DNCE 3070. Paul Topper moved to approve course and change in prerequisites. Seconded by Sexauer. Motion carried. Professor Mauger representing Geology requested changes in BS Degree requirements: 1) Drop foreign language requirement and 2) change in cognate courses Math 2171, 2172 or Math 3228 and 6 s.h. of computer science. Motion to approve by Neal. Seconded by Steele. Motion carried. Professors Bernhardt and Joyner represented Math Department. Requested: 1) Approval of new course Math 3218 (Teaching Mathematics in Special Education) and 2) approval of degree requirement of at least C in math courses and CSCI 2600 for all math major options. Motion to approve changes and course by Neal. Seconded by Coulter. Motion carried. Professor Lao representing Environmental Health requested name change in the following courses: (new title given) EHLT 3100 (Injury Control), 3700 (Industrial Hygiene), 3701 (Industrial Hygiene Laboratory), 3900 (Introduction to Occupational Health), 5010 (Principles of Toxicology), and 5011 (Toxicology Laboratory). Course descriptions remain the same. Title change reflects current nomenclature in the profession. Also requested approval of new course EHLT 2500 (Introduction to Radiological Health). If approved, request addition to required courses for BS in Env. Health and drop required cognates PHYS 1600, 1601. Motion to approve course and degree and name changes as amended by Coulter. Seconded by Steele. Motion carried. Motion by Grossnickle to bank HLTH 3250. Seconded by Yount. Motion Carried. representatives from Technology present so proposal tabled. Page 267 & CRIMINAL JUSTICE The major in criminal justice is designed to prepare students for entrance into professional positions in the field of criminal justice. Criminal Justice majors are required to complete thirty-nine semester hours (*) in their major, forty-four semester hours in general education courses, and up to six semester hours in cognate courses. All majors have a field education internship of twelve semester hours in one semester in an approved setting. Field placement settings include probation and parole agencies, law offices, district attorney and public defender offices, the North Carolina Department of Corrections, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and state and local law enforcement agencies. Each student is required to make application for the field education internship two semesters before the semester in the field.
