NOTICE: DEADLINE FOR PUBLICATION IN 1988-90 CATALOGUE, NOVEMBER 3, 1987 CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES SEPTEMBER 10, 1987 The Curriculum Committee met on Thursday, September 10, 1987 at 1:00 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were: Carlton, Coulter, Grossnickle, Keeter, Lunney, Muller, Steele, Topper, Wilentz, Yount, and Sexauer (ex-officio). Ex-officio absent: Neal and Cain The first item of business was election of a secretary. Next, the minutes of March 26, 1987, were approved as written. A review of the Committee's Charge was carried out by the Chair. Professor Chenier, Allied Health, requested approval of four new elective courses: HSTA 5371, 5372, 5373 (Statistical Practicum I, II, III), and HSTA 5440 (Applied Mult. Analysis). Letter of support from Math Dept. noted. Also requested deletion of HSTA 4990 which these courses replace. Steele moved approval of courses and deletion. Lunney seconded. The motion passed. Professor Boswell, HPERS, presented PE 5305 (Motor Development) as an elective course. Expected course enrollment clarified. Coulter moved to approve the course, Wilientz seconded. The motion passed. Professor Thompson, Political Science, requested that the Committee approve POLS 3145 (Soviet Foreign Policy), POLS 4310 (Public Policy and the Media), and POLS 3270 (Latin American Pol. System) as elective courses, revising the BA, BS (Professional) majors in Political Science and revising the minors in Public Administration, Political Science, and Comparative Government and International Relations. @ ietters of support from Military Science, European Studies, Aerospace Studies, Latin American Studies, Mass Communication and Journalism and Theatre Arts were read to the Committee. Discussion of letters as to request to add to other minors. Recommended by Committee that departments/area studies who are in Arts & Sciences go through Arts & Sciences Curriculum Committee first; others may direct requests for approval as elective for minor to Curriculum Committee. Professor Thompson volunteered to contact concerned parties about this. Muller moved approval of courses. Seconded by Keeter. The motion passed. Professors Grove and Markowski, Home Economics, requested approval of Home EC 4996, 4997 (Child-Family Internship & Lab), 5412 (Family Crisis and Resources), 5413 (Hospitalized Child), 5408 (Adm. of Programs for Young Children); delete Home Ec 5409 (replaced by 5408). Markowski presented several changes in course objectives and syllabus. Clarification: no expected added costs/staff/resources. Carlton moved to approve courses as amended. Seconded by Muller. The motion passed. Professors Bernhardt, Math, presented request for approval of five new elective courses: Math 5121 (Numerical Analysis in One Variable), 5122 (Numerical Analysis in Several Variables, 5131 (Deterministic Models in Operations Research), 5132 (Probabilistic Methods in Operations Research) and 5270 (PASCAL Using the Microcomputer). Also requested banking of Math 2182 and 2183. Clarification of target audience for Math 5270 (targeted to secondary education majors who need introduction to PASCAL). Also noted that departments that use Math 2182 and 2183 had been notified of intent to bank. Keeter moved approval of new courses and baking of Math @ 2182. 2183. Seconded by Lunney. The motion passed. Capt. Jones, Military Science, requested approval of MISC 2011 and 2012. These are lab courses to go with existing theory courses; to be taken concurrently with theory each 2 semester. Cadets are now voluntarily attending labs; this would allow more structure and better tracking. As they are 0 credit labs, no change in degree requirements as to credit hours. Motion to approve by Carlton. Seconded by Muller. The motion passed. @o2ic: to bank 10 INDT courses presented by Grossnickle. Courses are INDT 2142, 2143, 3040, 4040, 4041, 5501, 2072, 2073, 4060, 4061. Seconded by Sexauer. The motion passed. Professor Charles Broome presented request to revise BSBA and BS in Accounting. Requested approval of MGMT 3352 as required course. Waved add 3 hours to Common Body of Knowledge category for each degree and decreased elective hours by 3. Would apply to student admitted under 1988-90 Catalogue. Motion to approve change. Seconded by Topper, passed. Grossnickle presented request to remove Biol 5220 and 5221 from Curriculum bank and moved approval. Coulter seconded. The motion passed. Professor Bays, Economics, presented request to revise BS in Economics to allow declaration of a minor. Requires no modification of existing courses/prerequisites. Will allow for option of declaring a minor if student desires. This will need to be reflected in rewarding of catalogue description of BS track. Carlton moved to approve. Muller seconded. Some discussion as to whether option already possible even if not stated. This may make the option clearer. The motion passed. Letter of request from Nursing to revise degree requirements received. Request deletion of SPCH 2008/3004 as required course for BSN. will continue to be highly recommended by advisors, but students are presently unable to get in the course. The motion passed.
