Date of reports to the Faculty Senate V. April 12, 1988 Specific instructions from the Faculty Senate Resolution #88-31 regarding Availability of Courses for Registration was returned to the committee for specific recommendations. VI. Brief statement of committee organization, subcommittees, research activities, etc. A. Smith and Mayberry served on a joint subcommittee with the General College and Career Education Committees to fund, house and implement the freshman orientation course. B. Muller and Cobb served on a joint subcommittee with the General College after both committees met to discuss improved rewards for advising. C. Muller attended a conference on Supplemental Instruction and made a presentetion to representatives from the School of Nursing. D. Mayberry attended the First National Conference on Student Retention. E. Cotter began a bibliography of books and articles dealing with student retention. F. The committee studied improved administration of scholarships and met with the director of Financial Aid and representatives from Institutional Advancement. Approved their attempts to fund a position to coordinate scholarships and the publication of a scholarship directory. & VII. Committee accomplishments 1. Through its subcommittee, the new course for freshmen, EDUC 1000, has been funded, and pending final approval by the Board of Trustees, will be taught in the fall of 1988. 2. Studied and replied to letters from Hursey and Bernhardt. Sent reconm- mendation to the Task Force on Academic Preparation that they study the establishment of a Learning Assistance Center. 3. Approved a letter to Chancellor Eakin sent jointly with the General College Committee requesting a meeting with the Task Force and the Chancellor to discuss improved rewards for General College advising. 4. Gathered supporting data for Senate Resolution #88-30 regarding Student Workload/Courseload. 5. Met with the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, regarding improved course availability. VIII. Citation of Senate Resolutions #88-30 - Recommendation regarding Student Workload/Courseload #88-31 - Recommendation regarding Availability of Courses recommitted to oat committee IX. Business to be carried over to next year (See V). Continued investigation of improved rewards for General College advising. Evaluation of the committee A. Structure: A report was sent to the Committee on Committees suggesting they study a restructuring of committees to form a Recruitment and Admission Committee and a Retention and Appeals Committee Duties: Appropriate Functions: Appropriate Personnel: Approved a request that a representative from Cooperative Education be made an ex-officio member.
