CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES March 26, 1987 The Curriculum Committee met on Thursday, March 26, 1987, at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were: Yount, Templeton, Daugherty, Grossnickle, Wease, Steele, Keeter, Muller, Coulter, Topper, and Cain (ex-officio). Absent: Carlton The minutes of March 12, 1987, were approved as written. Professors Emilie Henning, Mary Kirkpatrick, and Betty Reynolds, School of Nursing, requested the approval of NURS 5327. Women's Health (3). Several letters of support were read. Most of the concerns expressed at the March 13, 1987, meeting were clarified. Yount moved to approve the course. Templeton seconded. Steele moved to amend the motion to require one course in nutrition as a prerequisite. Coulter seconded. The amendment failed. The motion to approve the course as presented passed. Wease moved that it be added to the list of electives for the Women's Studies Minor. Cain seconded. The motion passed. Professor William Bloodworth, Department of English, requested that the requirements for the B.S. in English be changed to require SEED 3272 rather than a choice of SEED 3271 or 3272. This will reduce the free electives by one hour. Muller moved to approve the change. Wease seconded. The motion passed. The Deparmtent of Physical Therapy requested the Committee to bank PTHE 4214 effective Spring of 1988, and to remove the course from the requirements in #4 on page 247, thereby reducing the hours to 44 s.h. Grossnickle moved to approve the changes. Templeton seconded. The motion passed. Professor Jo Ann Parkerson, School of Education, presented the course EDUC 5020, 5021. Authoring Systems for Educators (3,0). Muller moved to approve the course. Wease seconded. The motion passed. Professor Muller presented the requested changes in the B. S. Degree Home Economics in Education and Business Major: Teacher Certification Option. They wish to replace ECON 2113 with ECON 1000, remove HOME 4390 as a required course and increase the HOME electives by three s.h. and replace SEED 3271 with SEED 3272 increasing the professional credits by one s.h. Muller moved to approve the proposal. Wease seconded. The motion passed. Professors Cedric Winchell and Patricia Weeks, Department of Theatre Arts, presented the request to bank THEA 4010 and THEA 4020, and to replace them with new courses THEA 4025 and THEA 4026 in the Professional Actor Training concentration. Also, two new DANCE courses DNCE 4076, 4077. Theatre Dance Styles I, II (3,3). Topper moved approval of the proposals. Steele seconded. The motion passed. Professor Carl Adler, Department of Physics, presented requests for new courses PHYS 5715, Biophysics (3) and PHYS 5716, 5717. Topics in Medical Physics (3,3) and to change MATH 1065 from corequisite to prerequisite for PHYS 1250, 1260 and to change the prerequisites for PHYS 1600, 1601 to PHYS 1260, 1261. Professor Y. J. Lao and James Robertson, Department of Environmental Health were present to object to the change in prerequisites for PHYS 1600, 1601. The Physics Department wished to make the prerequisites uniform for all students. The Environmental Health Department must serve two aspects of public health which need different Physics requirements. To address the impasse it was suggested that the Departments explore all avenues to resolve the problem including the possibility that an adjunct professor might teach the course as it is now. Muller moved to approve PHYS 5715, 5716, 5717 with prerequisites added to 5715 and to change MATH 1065 from corequisite to prerequisite for PHYS 1250, 1260. Topper seconded. The motion passed. Coulter moved to approve the prerequisite change for PHYS 1600, 1601. Keeter seconded. The motion failed. Grossnickle moved to refer PHYS 1600, 1601 back to the Departments for further discussion. Steele seconded. The motion passed. Professors John Swope and Elizabeth Sparrow presented the proposal to revise the B.S.B.E. and Transfer Program; revise the B.S. teaching degrees; add ASIP 4300 Administrative Office Procedures (3), BUTE 5503 (3), TECH 4323. The motion passed. Professors Bob Christian and Pat Bizzaro presented the postition papers on Writing Across the Curriculum. Yount made a motion that the Curriculum Committee support the concept of Writing Across the Curriculum and that the Faculty Senate appoint a Committee to study the problem. Muller seconded.
