CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES
OCTOBER 23, 1986

The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, October 23, 1986, in Brewster B-103.
Members present were: Steele, Topper, Keeter, Grossnickle, Wease, Daugherty,

Carlton and Cain (ex-officio). Members absent were: Muller, Templeton, Yount,
Coulter.

The minutes of October 9, 1986 were approved with the correction that Topper was
present.

Grossnickle moved to bank the following courses: BIOL 5040/5041, 5190/91,

5220/21, CHEM 5450, PHYS 1070, SOCI 3280 and MATH 5252. Daugherty seconded. The
motion passed.

Professors Donald Neal and David Saunders were present for the discussion of the
policy concerning giving General Education credit for designated area studies and
interdisciplinary courses. Cain moved to approve the following guidelines.

1. The General College Committee agrees with the intent of the proposal to
general education credit for designated area studies and
interdisciplinary courses.

The mechanism for granting such credit should include the following:

a.

appropriate curriculum committees and the Faculty Senate and be
designated as meeting specific general education requirements.

For Area Studies and Interdisciplinary Courses which are not clearly
in a specific category, instructors, course syllabi and the
designation of the area in which general education credit (Arts,
Humanities, etc.) is to be granted must be approved, as appropriate,
by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs or by the Assistant Dean
of the College of Arts and Sciences responsible for the
administration of Area/Studies/Interdisciplinary Studies programs in
consultation with the appropriate program committee and department
involved in offering these courses.

Topper seconded. The motion passed. Grossnickle moved that Designated
Area/Studies Interdisciplinary Studies not be an additional category under each of
the general education headings; Science, Social Science, Humanities, Fine Arts.
Steele seconded. The motion passed.

Professors Jim Mitchell and Marie Farr were present to request appropriate general
education credit for GERO 2400 and WOST 2000, 2200, 2400. It was noted that as of
the end of Fall Semester PSYCH 2400, SOCI 2400, HOME 2400 and HPRO 2400 are to be

deleted. Topper moved to approve the requests as amended (See Catalogue Copy).
Steele seconded. The motion passed.

requests: to drop SPCH 3004 as a specific requirement for the B.S. degree in
English; to add ENGL 2700 as a required course and remove ENGL 5700 as a required
course; to add ENGL 3260 to the first group 1n.3.c..6fethe BES. degree; and a new
course ENGL 2700 Introduction to Language Studies (3). Carlton moved to approve

the changes. Wease seconded. The motion passed.
The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

human development. This course can be used toward satisfaction of the
humanities requirement for general education. Students who take this
course may not receive credit for WOST 2200 or 2400.

WOST 2200. Introduction to Women's Studies: Arts (3)

p.88 An interdisciplinary approach to the study of women in society,
stressing women as artists and subjects of art. This course may be
used to satisfy the fine arts requirement for general education.

Students who take this course may not also receive credit for WOST
2000 or 2400.

WOST 2400. Introduction to Women's Studies: Social Sciences (3)

p.88 An interdisciplinary approach to the study of women in society,
stressing historical and contemporary roles of women as contributors to
that society and to their own human development. This course can be
used toward satisfaction of the social science requirement for general

education. Students who take this course may not also receive credit
for WOST 2000 or 2200.

Gerontology Studies Minor

GERO 2400. Introduction to Gerontology (3)
Ds 4 A survey of current theory and research in the Gerontology field
presented from an interdisciplinary perspective. This course can be

used toward satisfaction of the social science requirement for general
education.
