EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES October 9, 1986 The Curriculum Committee met Thursday, October 9, 1986, at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were: Carlton, Steele, Templeton, Keeter, Grossnickle, Daugherty, Muller, Coulter, Wease; Cain and Wilson (ex-officio). Members absent were: Topper, Yount. The minutes of September 25, 1986 were approved with the correction on page 1 that MUSC 5446 and 5916 were 2 s.h. not 3 s.h. each. Professor Jerry Lotterhos, Director of Alcohol/Drug Abuse Program, presented the request to revise the titles and syllabi to reflect Alcohol and Drug Abuse or Addictions rather than just alcohol abuse and to make a change on page 263.087 tae number change of HPRO 2002 to HPRO 2003 will affect the degree programs on page 249 which presently use HPRO 2002 in the list of courses which may be taken. Templeton moved to approve the courses as changed. (See catalogue copy) Keeter seconded. Carlton moved that the four courses whose titles and syllabi were changed retain the old numbers. Muller seconded. The vote was 4 for and 4 against. The motion to retain the old numbers failed. Wease moved to amend the main motion of approval to simplify the catalogue description of HPRO 5100 (See catalogue copy) Carlton seconded. The motion to change the catalogue description passed. Templeton's motion to approve passed. Professors Jerry Lotterhos, Chairman of the Department of Community Health and Sheldon Downs, Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Studies, presented the request for eleven new courses and a proposed minor in Community Health and Rehabilitation Studies. Others in attendance were Dean Eugene Ryan, Dean Ronald Thiele, Professors Pat Dunn, Karen Hancock, Rick Barnes, Evelyn Knight, Donald Ensley. Concern was expressed about whether sufficient coordination had been accomplished and about apparent overlap in course content. Cain moved to table the entire proposal and that there be additional consultation and coordination with all other schools and departments which might be concerned including Nursing and History. Steele seconded. The motion passed. This curriculum, taught under the HPRO prefix, is available to students in all health and social science degree programs as an elective specialty or concentration area of study. Alcohol and Drug Abuse: Health and Social Problems (3) (p250) (Formerly HPRO 2002) The study and evaluation of the origins of alcohol and drug use; toxicological effects on physical, psychological, and social behavior; attitudes and responses to the use and abuse of alcohol and drugs as derived from historical sources, cross-cultural comparisons, and studies of contemporary chemical use patterns and practices; etiological theories of addiction; prevalence and dysfunctional effects on the individual, on public health, and social control, and prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Addiction (3) (p252) (Formerly HPRO 5094) Prerequisites: HPRO 2003 or permission of instructor A study of the socio-cultural, psychological and physiological contributions to alcohol and the major drug addictions. An analysis of the etiological theories of addiction; analysis of philosophies and modalities of treatment including family, individual and group counseling, vocational rehabilitation, detoxification processes, etc. Analysis of self-help treatment philosophies. Study of intervention concepts and strategies; analysis of the dynamics of motivation; assessment techniques; analysis of models for the contemporary treatment of addiction within the health care system. Analysis of roles of various professionals in treating addiction and a study of barriers to effective application of treatment processes in our society. HPRO 5095. Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (3) (p252) (Formerly HPRO 5096) Prerequisites: HPRO 2003 or consent of instructor An analysis of the various issues relative to the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse as a community health problem. Critical evaluation of various models and philosophies of prevention. Includes early intervention and secondary prevention models including employee assistance programs. Students will be provided exposure to on-going prevention efforts and strategies. Barriers to prevention programs will be examined. HPRO 5097. Program Designs for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (3) (p252) (Formerly HPRO 5098) Prerequisites: HPRO 2003 and HPRO 5093 or HPRO 5095) This course examines the elements, structures, and functions of program designed to deal with chemical abuse problems. Analysis or pros and cons of various program philosophies including separate vs. integrated programs. Defines the components of a comprehensive alcohol/drug program. Examines the relationship of alcohol/drug programs to the total health care system. Examines the various barriers to effective programming. Examines planning, organization, funding, and operation of chemical abuse programs in American society. HPRO 5099. Independent Study in Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Addiction (3) (p252) Prerequisites: HPRO 2003, 5093, 5095, Senior or Graduate Standing Independent studies in Alcohol/Drug Abuse available to seniors and graduate students who wish to pursue independent study in Alcohol/Drug Abuse etiology, epidemiology, treatment, rehabilitation, intervention, or prevention. HPRO 5100. Contemporary Alcohol/Drug Abuse Issues (2) (p252) Prerequisites: HPRO 2003, 5093, and 5095 or 5097 Consideration of significant and/or controversial issues in the Alcohol/Drug field. Issues in a given semester will be chose based upon current considerations.
