Professors Ennis Chestang, Marie Farr, Donald Neal and James Mitchell were present to discuss the recommendation from the General College Committee on granting general education credit for area studies and interdisciplinary courses. In the discussion the members of the Curriculum Committee felt that the numbering scheme would not be very helpful to advisors and students, however, an area may develop its own numbering system if it so desires. Designating each course as to its proper category (i.e. Social Science or Humanities, etc.) would be more acceptable. If a particular course could be used in more than one category at different offerings due to a different teachers topic and emphasis, then a separate course number should be available to indicate the category. For example, a present course states "may or may not be used toward satisfaction of the general education requirements, depending on subject matter" a possible listing might be BeBS: Lo01. 5502, )1503, 225045 2505; Interdisciplinary Seminar (Social Science, Humanities, Arts, No Gen. Ed.) (3) An interdisciplinary investigation which crosses over the lines of the areas. For example "A Behavioral Approach to Modern Philosophy of Art''. The Curriculum Committee suggested that the following guidelines might be considered: The General College Committee agrees with the intent of the proposal to grant we general education credit for designated area studies and interdisciplinary courses. The mechanism for granting such credit should include the following: a. Area Studies and Interdisciplinary Courses must be approved by the appropriate curriculum committees and the Faculty Senate and be be designated as meeting specific general education requirements. For Area Studies and Interdisciplinary Courses which are not clearly in a specific category, instructors, course syllabi and the designation of the area in which general education credit (Arts, Humanities, etc.) is to be granted must be approved, as appropriate, by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs or by the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences responsible for the administration of Area Studies/Interdisciplinary Studies programs in consultation with the appropriate program committee and department involved in offering these courses. The proposal as presented also suggested that an additional category, Designated Area Studies/Interdisciplinary Studies, be included under each of the general education headings: Science, Social Science, Humanities, Fine Arts. Upon discussion it was felt that this suggestion needed further study and clarification since it appeared to possibly be a substantial change. Carlton moved to table the recommendation concerning general education credit. Daugherty seconded. The motion to table passed. The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, “Af aN j AV tile Vueghoh, SY Me 4, ¢ Stella Daugherty, Secretary Curriculum Committee SD/SB CURRICULUM COMMITTEE CATALOGUE COPY OF SEPTEMBER 25, 1986 Department of Mathematics & (p190) MATH 3238.
