CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES NOVEMBER 14, 1985 The Curriculum Committee met November 14, 1985 at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were: Yount, Templeton, McMillan, Wease, Muller, Grossnickle, Daugherty, Hancock, Topper, Carlton, Cain and Wilson (ex-officio). Absent: Steele The minutes of October 24, 1985 were approved as written. Professor Grossnickle moved to bank the following courses: CSCI 1584; GEOG 3001, 3048, 5007, 5009, 5020; BIOL 4720. Templeton seconded the motion. The motion passed. Professor Odell Welborn, Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Safety, presented the request to delete DRED 5331. K-12 Safety Education (3) and replace it with a new course DRED 3330. K-12 Safety Education (3). It will be used to replace DRED 5331 in both the major and minor in Driver and Safety Education. Wease moved to approve the changes. Yount seconded. The motion passed. Professor Wendell Allen, Department of Biology, presented the new course proposal BIOL 5940, 5941. Hybridoma Technology (2,0). Templeton inoved approval; Yount seconded. The motion passed. Professor Martin Schwarz, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, presented the request to change the prerequisites for SPAN 2115 and 2116 and to add a new course SPAN 3006. Spanish for International Business (3). Professor Yount moved approval of the changes; Templeton seconded. The motion passed. Professors Moses Sheppard and Michael Jones, Department of Science Education, presented the request to increase the hours for SCIE 3350, 3351. Descriptive Astronomy from (3,0) to (4,0). This change affects certain areas of the B.S. degree in Science Education. (See catalogue copy). McMillan moved to approve the proposal as amended. Carlton seconded. The motion passed. Professor Brad Foley, School of Music, presented the requests to add a statement requiring music majors to attend at least 75 percent of all general recitals, to change the catalogue description for MUSC 2195 and to add a new course MUSC 2196. Advanced Jazz Improvisation (2). Daugherty moved to approve the _proposSals as amended. Topper seconded. The motion passed. Professor Grossnickle moved to approve the School of Technology's request to delete Graphic Communication as an area of concentra- tion from the INDT B.S. (professional) inajor and minor. Hancock seconded. The motion passed. Professors William Buckler and Fred Day, Department of Geography, presented the proposals to bank GEOG 5098, to delete 10 GEOG courses, to change or add 22 courses. These changes affect the degrees in Geography, Political Science, Environmental Health, Social Studies, Middle Grades, and the Latin American Studies Minor and the Coastal and Marine Studies minor. (For complete details see the catalogue copy attached to your Faculty Senator's copy of these minutes). Hancock moved to approve the proposals as amended. Templeton seconded. The motion passed. Professors Charles Coble, John Richards, Amos Clark, Patricia Terrell and Donald Spence of the School of Education were present to present the request for changes in the General Education requirements for the B. S. degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, Intermediate Education, and Middle Grades Education. The following persons were present to present their views: Moses Sheppard, Carolyn Hampton, Carol Hampton, Michael Jones, Katharine Hodgin, Robert Bernhardt, Nancy Mayberry, Byron Coulter and Donald Clemens. Dean Coble stated that the School of Education had spent the last eighteen months studying their General Education requirements with the desire to bring them more in line with the other areas. To a question about the impact on the departments involved, Coble stated that he had been given a verbal commitment by the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor that no one would be dismissed because of this change. He also mentioned the possible cross listing or double listing of some of the science courses between Science Education and other science departments. Considerable concern was expressed about being able to meet the necessary competencies if the change was made. It was brought out that the Science Education and Mathematics departments were unaware of the changes until about three weeks prior to this meeting. With regard to the additional hours in Mathematics it was not clear as to whether the student would be allowed to take any course he wanted to or whether he would take new courses the School of Education planned to ask the Mathematics Department to develop to meet the required compe- tencies. Muller moved to accept the proposals. Wease seconded. McMillan moved to table. Carlton seconded. The motion to table passed with 9 votes for and 3 against. Professor Patricia Terrell, School of Fducation, presented the request to delete ELEM 4302 and add a new course ELEM 4310. Program Implementation in Early Childhood Education (3) (formerly ELEM 4302), and a change in paragraph 4, line 4 on page 301 of the 1984-86 catalogue. Templeton moved to approve the changes. Wilson seconded. The motion passed. Professors Frances Daugherty and Robert Edmiston presented the School of Art's proposals to change ART 1900 and 1901 to 1906 and 1907, to revise the BFA, BA, BFA in Art Education and Art minor, to change prerequisites for 35 courses, to change catalogue description for ART 4450, 4451, 4452, and add two new courses ART 4005 and ART 4006. ease moved to approve the proposals as amended, Hancock seconded. The motion passed. Professors Emily Boyce and Connie Miller, Department of Library and Information Studies, presented the changes in semester hours, prerequisites and the addition of LIBS 5100. Introduction to Library and Information studies (1) (formerly LIBS 5101). It was noted that the B.S. degree in Library Science was being phased out. Muller moved to approve the changes. Yount seconded. The motion passed. Professors Robert Bernhardt and Katharine Hodgin, Department of Mathematics, presented the request to bank MATH 2165, 2166 and to change the prerequisite and catalogue description for MATH 3230. Daugherty moved to approve the changes. Carlton seconded. The motion passed, The policy on General Education credit for Interdisciplinary courses and the European Studies Minor were postponed. Professor Robert Gowen presented the request to bank ASAS 3010, 3011, and to revise the Asian Studies Minor. (See catalogue copy for details). He also requested that ASAS 2004 Introduction to Japanese Culture (3) be approved without credit toward General Education. Wease moved to approve the proposals. Grossnickle seconded.
