CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES September 12, 1985 The Curriculum Committee met September 12, 1985, at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were: Muller, Steele, Yount, Grossnickle, Hancock, Daugherty, McMillan, Cain, Topper, Wease and Carlton. Members absent: Templeton, The Chair announced that the deadline for the 1986-88 catalogue will be January 1, 1986. Therefore, all proposals needing Curriculum Committee and subsequently, Faculty Senate approval, must be approved by the Committee no later than November. The minutes of April 1, 1985 were approved with the correction that the Food Service Management Minor was not deleted. Professor Grossnickle made a motion to remove FREN 4385. History of the French Language (3) from the Curriculum Course Bank. McMillan seconded and the motion passed. Professor C. Q. Brown, Chair of the Department of Geology presented the request to change the number of GEOL 5100, 5101. Paleontology (4,0) to GEOL 4200, 4201. Paleontology (4,0). The B. S. Degree in Geology and the Geology Minor are revised to reflect this number change. McMillan moved that th changes be approved. Muller seconded. The motion passed. , Professor Fred Hamblen, School of Business, presented the request for a new course FINA 3244. Commercial Law (3). He stated that the School of Business did not anticipate any additional cost. Yount moved to approve the proposal. Topper seconded. The motion passed. Professor John Spence presented the proposal for a new course in the Asian Studies Area ASAS 2004. Introduction to Japanese Culture (3). He Stated that he assumed there was no additional cost, however, it was not absolutely clear which department has the responsibility for the course. There was discussion concerning whether it should be counted toward humanities or social science for general education. Muller moved to approve the course as presented. Wease seconded. Commercial Law (3) Prerequisites: FINA 2244 or permission of the instructor. A study of selected traditional areas of the law that affect the commercial community. Includes the law of sales, bailments of personal property, commercial paper, secured transactions, bank deposits and collections, insurance, and other aspects of the Uniform Commercial Code. In the Program on page 84 of the 1984-86 Catalogue under 2d, add ASAS 2004 to the list of courses. CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES September 26, 1985 The Curriculum Committee met September 26, 1985, at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-103. Members present were: Muller, Steele, Grossnickle, Hancock , — Daugherty, McMillan, Cain, Topper, Wease, Carlton and Wilson (ex-officio). Members absent: Yount and Templeton. The minutes of September 12, 1985 were corrected to show that Professor Don Spence presented the Asian Studies Area course. The minutes were approved as corrected, Due to a misunderstanding the ASAS 2004. Introduction to Japanese Culture (3) was reconsidered. Professor Robert Gowan presented the course and stated that it was almost entirely culturally oriented and to be consistent with the Chinese Culture course, they wanted it to count toward humanities in General Education. The Asian Studies Area Committee had not been aware that the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee had struck the phrase concerning it counting for General Education. Hancock moved that based on the additional information the action of the committee remain as recorded in the September 12, 1985 minutes. Steele seconded. The motion passed. Professor Gowan pointed out that ASAS 2003. Introduction to Chinese Culture (3) should be added to the list of electives. It was moved and seconded to add this course to the list. The motion passed. Professor Jean Huryn, Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Economics, presented the course SOCI 2125. The Sociology of Parenthood (3). MeMillan moved to approve the course. Topper seconded. The motion passed.
