FACULTY SENATE MINUTES April 24, 1935 The organizational meeting of the Faculty Senate for the 1985-86 academic year was held in Room 244, Mendenhall Student Center on Wednesday, April 24, 1985, at 2:10 p.m. with James LeRoy Smith, chair, presiding. Members absent were: Kares (Academic Library Services), Schellenberger (Business), Denney (Continuing Education), Gallagher (Home Economics), Dudek (Medicine), Vincent (Nursing), and Jones (Science Education). Alternates present included the following: O'Brien for Thomas (Allied Health), Jones for South (English), Pennington for Duckett, Boklage for O'Brien (Medicine), and Donahue for Rees (Theatre Arts). Agenda Item I. The Chair called the meeting to order and recognized Hough, Boyce, and Fulghum as tellers. ageode Item II. The Chair called the roll, and senators for the 1985~86 acade mic year were recognized. Agenda Item IIIA. Report of the Nominating Committee Chauncey (Music) presented the nominees for officers of the Senate for 1085- 86. The two candidates for Chair gave a short presentation in support of their candidacy. The results of the elections were: Chair of the Faculty Stella Daugherty 16 Ken Wilson 31 Total ballots cast 47 Ken Wilson (Sociology/Anthropology/Economics) was elected Chair of the Faculty. _ First Ballot Second Ballot Daugherty 11 6 Ironsmith 17 14 McGrath 19 26 Total ballots cast 47 % (No election) On the second ballot Madge McGrath (Allied Health and Social Work) was elected Vice Chair of the Faculty. Secretary of the Faculty Naney Mayberry bo Margie Gallagher 12 Total ballots cast 47 Nancy Mayberry (Foreign Languages and Literatures) was elected Secretary cof the Faculty. Agenda Item III.B. Report of the Committee on Committees Woodside presented the report of the Committee on Committees. Nominations were called for by the Chair for each committee. If nominations were presented for a specific committee, the Senate elected the members for that committee at that time. After reviewing the total list of committees, the entire slate was approved by acclamation. All terms are for three years unless specified otherwise. The results of the elections were: ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE Betty Haddock, Nursing, was nominated from the floor. Results of the election were: Patricia Anderson, Education 34 Tom Evans, Art 34 Charles Garrison, Sociology 37 Betty Haddock, Nursing 20 Ballots cast JW3 Anderson, Evans, and Garrison were elected. Dennis Chestnut, Psychology, and Betty Haddook were nominated from the floor to fill the unexpired term as alternate. Results of the election were: Dennis Chestnut 18 Betty Haddock 28 Ballots cast Te Betty Haddock was elected to fill the unexpired term as alternate until 1986. Emily Boyce, Library and Information Studies, resigned from the Committee which left a term expiring in 1986. Results of the election were: {Herb Carlton, Political Science 36 Marilyn Steele, Home Economics 39 Dorothy Muller, Education 27 Jeannie Yount, Nursing 21 Total ballots cast Tz Carlton, Steele, and Muller were elected for three-year terms, Yount was elected to serve until 1986. EDUCATIONAL POLICIES AND PLANNING Emily Boyce was nominated from the floor. Results of the election were: Emily Boyce, Library and Information Studies 39 ay Tom Johnson, HPERS 7 Total ballots cast § 46 Emily Boyce was elected. FACULTY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE Don Sexauer, Art Karl Rodabaugh, Continuing Education (alternate) Bob Woodside, Mathematics FACULTY COMPUTER Carl Adler, Physics, intending to nominate James Gaiser, moved that the Senate consider nominating fixed-term faculty for committee membership. Ferrell, commented that the motion was out of order. Smith stated that he ‘would rule the motion in order in that the status of fixed-term faculty was a sensitive issue at East Carolina. Ferrell offered a substitution suggesting that the issue be deferred until the fall. The motion was seconded by Kledaras. The motion passed which precluded James Gaiser's nomination.
