Specific instructions from Faculty Senate.

Ken Wilson requested the Committee's input regarding the computer
registration problems which occurred during summer orientation.

Brief statement of committee organization, activities, etc.

1. Scott Parker appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to design an orientation
course for Freshmen. Mohammed Ahrari was appointed as Chair of the

committee.

The Committee requested Deans Bailey and Speier to draft
recommendations for the improvement of faculty advising during

the orientation period.

 
3. The Committee investigated several methods to improve faculty
advising throughout the school year.

VII. List of Committee accomplishments.

1. The Ad Hoc Committee developed a complete new course proposal:
"The Freshman And The University - ECU 1000." The proposal was
reviewed by the entire committee, The General College Committee,
Vice-Chancellor Volpe and faculty representatives from Health
and Library Science departments respectively. After making several
changes in the course proposal Dr. Ahrari was requested to present
the proposal to the University Curriculum Committee for their consideration.

The committee reviewed the Bailey/Speier recommendations for
Orientation advising, concurred with it and recommended to Bailey

and Speier that they implement the proposal.

After a lengthy study of several proposals to improve faculty
advising including the implementation of freshman mid-semester

grade distribution to advisors and the Academic Support and Assistance
Program (ASAP) currently in use at the University of South Carolina,
none of the proposals were endorsed by the committee.

IX. Proposals and/or business to be carried over next year.

The committee will oversee the progress of University Review of the
freshman orientation course.

The committee continues to believe its attention is best spent on a con-
centration of student retention. Consequently, it intends to investigate

improvement of faculty advising.

The committee would like to express its thanks to a number of university
staff and faculty who, though they were not committee members, worked
very hard on committee projects, attending meetings and advising. Chief
among three individuals is Ray Edwards who was the chief architect for

the freshman or@eéntation course. Also of great help were Inez Fridley,
Ron Speier, Pam Penland and Gil Moore.
