Dear Angelo:

In reviewing in detail Chuck's letter to me re admissions matters, I'm really
not sure what would be wrong with going full guns and making all of this data available
to the Senate.... it is very nicely done and any worries in it are sheltered by the
completeness of the report... --something lost with any attempt to give a"thumnail”

This is further prompted, in my mind, by the work that is forthcoming re
the recruitment and retention recomms you will be getting soon...

...1.e., this is not something that ECU is not working on, etc. Plus,
the report given by Scott Parker (Ussery, D. Bailey, etc) to the A&S Chairs was
to the point, complete, etc... and was met with eminent understanding and concurrence
by the Chairs.... I could but think the senators would be as understanding, esp given
the consent decree goals, etc... No senate, least of all no one senator, could

have any legs to carp about that:

In general, then, I side with the give the whole story and be firm in the
face of "ideal, half-considered objections" that "someone" might have.

There are two general principles, apart from the above, that also prompt
me to this view:

(1) It's usually best to share as much as possible with faculty, and
defend the ship... (You do this eminently well, I have observed..:)

(2) When handed "pieces," obstinate detractors just get further "whetted."

I would be anxious to talk further and, if you think it best, then begin
drafting some smaller sheet of only some data... either by phone, or my trip over
GO VOULZ OBER COs.

Math requirement: 3 units of college preparatory math (Algebra I,
Il, and Geometry)
Beginning 11-21-80 - admitted students with a PGA
of 2.2 and above who had only completed two units

of college preparatory math were given one year

to remove the deficiency at ECU.

Reyuirements for Special Studies Admissions: Admission decision made by

professional staff.

@ Although the formula for determining the PGA has remained the same since 1982,

the average SAT scores have declined. The scores of all new freshmen for each

of the four years are as follows:

The test scores have, of course, been declining at the state and national levels
as well for several years but have recently shown a leveling off. Following is a
comparison of ECU averages with national and state averages.

The ECU scores are based on the entire freshman class and include 2660 students. If
athletes, nontraditional students, and special studies admits are eliminated the
average SAT score for the 2397 regularly admitted freshmen is 856.

& In 1983 the College Board did a Comprehensive Undergraduate Enrollment Planning
Project which included Market Segment Profiles. One such profile was the Coastal
Plains of North Carolina. Students who took the SAT in the Coastal Plains market
were divided into four segments. They were: local students - defined as those who

send most of their SAT scores to colleges located in the markets where the students

reside; in-state students - those who send most of their scores to institutions

located within their home state; regional students - those who send most of their

 

 

scores to colleges and universities in the Southern region (Florida, Georgia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia); and national students - those who send most o

their scores to institutions located outside of the Southern region. The numbers of

As a regional institution with an obligation to serve the population of Eastern North
Carolina it will be difficult to realize a significant increase in average SAT scores.
Nevertheless, our goal will be to improve the quality of future classes without
diminishing our capacity to serve the clientele in Eastern North Carolina.
