Ryan (all excused) Reports to the Faculty Senate: February 19, 1985 (for discussion only) and March 26, 1985, Teaching Effectiveness Committee Report on "Recommendations for New Student Opinion Questionnaires and Procedures" (see attached). V. Specific Instructions to the Committee by the Faculty Senate No specific instructions were given to the Committee by the Faculty Senate other than those found in the Committee's organizational charge. Committee Organization and Activities A. Committee Chair was Belinda Lee; Vice Chair was John Longhill; and Secretary was Ed Ryan. B. The Faculty Development Subcommittee was chaired by Martin Schwarz with M. Cain and B. Lee. The Subcommittee surveyed Deans and Unit Heads and planned and coordinated a faculty development workshop during Spring Semester. The Student Opinion of Instruction Survey Subcommittee was co- chaired by Madge McGrath and Bill Bloodworth with R. Denney, G. Levine, and M. Wubneh. The Subcommittee used the 1983-84 Student Opinion of Instruction Survey Subcommittee report for future action and TEC discussions/revisions to develop "Recommendations for New Student Opinion Questionnaires and Procedures" for Committee consideration. The Faculty Development Center Subcommittee was formed to continue lobbying efforts for a faculty development office. The members were John Longhill, Chair and R. Denney. Committee Accomplishments A. Committee recommendations regarding "Principles, to Guide the Use of Student Opinion Data," "Form for Administrative Evaluation of Teaching," and "Form for Improvement of Teaching," were presented to the Faculty Senate and approved on March 26, 1985. Compiled a file (available for review in the Faculty Senate Office) containing criteria, procedures and/or survey instruments that have been developed by academic units for use in the annual eval- uation of faculty teaching effectiveness. This file was developed to enhance the efforts of all units to develop additional means of evaluating teaching beyond the use of the Student Opinion of Instruction Questionnaire. Sponsored a faculty development workshop for interested faculty. Dr. Denny Wolfe, Old Dominion University “Writing for Learning Across the Disciplines," February 7, 1985 "Workshop on Writing for Learning," February 8, 1985 Recommended to Institutional Research the criteria to be used in selecting the recipients of the Alumni Awards for Teaching Excellence. Recommended to Institutional Research the design/format of the new Student Opinion of Instruction Survey questionnaire. -3- VIIL. Senate Resolution Numbers Originating With The Committee Senate Resolution 85-13 Received the Teaching Effectiveness Committee Report Senate Resolution 85-14 Approved the Principles to Guide the Use of Student Opinion Data Senate Resolution 85-15 Approved the Form for Administrative Evaluation of Teaching Senate Resolution 85-16 Approved the Form for Improvement of Teaching Business to be Carried Over to Next Year A. Finalize plans for implementing the new Student Opinion of Instruction Survey. Revise the criteria and process used for selecting the recipients of the Alumni Awards for Teaching Excellence. Continue to promote the importance of teaching in the teaching—-research-service triad. Continue to lobby for a faculty development office. Establish procedures/methods for formal participant evaluation of faculty development programs. Evaluation of the Committee A. Structure: worked well. B. Duties and Function: The Committee has continued to promote teaching excellence and to encourage improved teaching effectiveness as delineated in its charge. Committee accomplishments (see VII) validate a very busy and successful year. C. Personnel: Outstanding! Participation was excellent. Suggestions for Improving the Effectiveness of the Committee Student members should be appointed in the spring for the next academic year.
