EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA 27834 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR July 23, 1984 Ro mpd ae Dr.. William E. Laupus ceived School of Medicine Jui East Carolina University L24 1984 FACULTY SENATE Dear Dr. Laupus: I approve the School of Medicine Code with the following changes: In the first page preamble sentence relating to faculty participation in personnel actions, make specific references to Appendices C and D: The overriding force of those docu- ments goes without saying, but it clarifies the hierarchy of rules for persons who may in the future apply the code without that knowledge. The amended sentence would read: "Procedures established in this code allow the faculty of this unit, acting under the provisions of Appendices C and D of the Faculty Manual, to participate by making recommendations to the unit head on appointments, promotions and permanent tenure." On page 3, Section II C, the code defines voting faculty: It would be less confusing if you began with the new definition passed by the Board of Trustees on July 1 and then added any- thing more if more is needed. On page 5, pronouns referring fo Dean should be him/her: In other instances you refer to chairperson rather than chair- man. This change would be not only consistent but would hold out hope for both sexes. On page 5, change "A quorum will be" to "A quorum is". Page 21. The ECU Code, Section B, requires that unit codes be approved by a majority of the permanently tenured faculty members of the unit. Your amendment procedure should require the same vote. You may retain the three-fourths of all voting members if you wish, but you should add after "Medical Faculty" in number 6 "and a majority of the permanently tenured faculty members of the unit".
