Dear Dr. Brown:

I approve the Faculty Senate approved revision of the
Department of Geology code with the following modifications:

Section III, B, 15. Omit the word "designate" and
insert the phrase "recommend to the Dean of the College
of Arts and Sciences". Appointments of acting or assistant
department chairs requires the approval of the Dean.

Section IV, A. Change Personnel Committee to
Personnel Subcommittee.

Section IV, E designates the permanently tenured
faculty as the Personnel Committee by granting that
group the final vote.

Section IV, B. Same change as above. Omit the
phrase "and matters related to salary". The subject

of salaries is not within the realm of concern of the
code.

Section IV, C. Change Committee to Subcommittee
as above. Replace the word "Evaluations" with the term
"Personnel recommendations". The Personnel Committee
makes personnel recommendations. The unit head completes
faculty evaluations in accord with appendix C.

Section IV, E. Following "permanently tenured faculty"
add "functioning as the Personnel Committee". Having the
final vote makes them the Personnel Committee. In the
second sentence, replace the word "Department's" with
"Personnel Committee's" and after "recommendation" add

"together with his Own". Omit the third sentence.
Appendix D does not provide for this.

Section V. Add the sentence "No provision for summer
school employment shall be in conflict with the Faculty
Manual, Part III - Faculty Load."

Section VI and VII. After the word "entire" add
"permanently tenured". Appendix L, part B requires this.
