Agenda Item 3A: Charles Coble, Acting Dean of the School of Education, presented the proposed Administrative Structure for Teacher Education for the response to NCATE and SDPI accreditation. Professors Sowell and Chambliss will co-chair the self-study commission. NCATE will make a return visit to campus March 18-20, 1984. SDPI will visit later. In consultation with officials in Washington, D.C. and Raleigh, it has been indicated that the proposed changes are acceptable. Professor Coble expressed his appreciation to the committees and persons who assisted in developing a structure appropriate for ECU. Adler asked about how much control departments will lose. The proposed structure is intended to allow the continued involvement of the departments particularly since the strength in secondary education is felt to be in the department structure. Professional educators feel cut off from academic units and the new structure gets both together. Vice Chancellor Volpe pointed out that the accreditation officials had not questioned the quality of our programs. SDPI commented favorably about content and professional preparation in departments.
