A task force to investigate the need for evening degree programs was formed and made its report to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The task force reported that there is a need for several degree programs to be offered during evening hours. The groups recommended that the responsibility for organizing and promoting the evening degree programs be assigned to the Division of Continuing Education, specifically the University College. It is clearly understood that the academic responsibility for the programs will rest with the deans and departmental chairpersons. The Division of Continuing Education will be responsible for promotion, recruiting, registration, and other logistical assistance needed by adult students. The program will begin fall, 1984. The committee discussed two illustrations contained in Standard 9, published by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which may be a problem in the future. One illustration deals with funding continuing education. The Standard specifies that support should be consistent with support of all units in the University. The other illustration deals with central coordination of continuing education programs. No specific action was taken.
