Specific instructions to the committee by Faculty Senate No specific instructions were received from Faculty Senate. Committee activity and organization Committee chair was Madge McGrath; vice chair, Kenneth Wilson; secretary, Belinda Lee. Two subcommittees were appointed. One subcommittee chaired by Kenneth Wilson with Graham, Lee and Longhill as members investigated data presented by Robert Ussery, Institutional Research, and recommended changes in the survey instrument used in student evaluation of faculty. The second subcommittee chaired by Phil Adler with members Dixon, Eamon, McGrath, Ryan, Schwarz and Tindel planned a two-week .series of faculty development sessions held during the weeks of March 14 and 21. 1982-1983 was the first year the committee has functioned under a revised charge after relinquishing selection of teaching grant recipients to the new Teaching Grants Committee. The committee's main activities were in faculty development. A proposal for a Faculty Development Center was presented to University administration during the summer and early fall of ‘82. The concept had administrative support, but budget constraints precluded its funding on even a part- time basis. Several alternate sources of funding were investigated but no funds were available. Work on the student evaluation of faculty survey instrument and the administration of the survey was the second focus of activity. Committee accomplishments and recommendations 1. Presented a proposal for creation of a faculty development office to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and other administrators during the summer and early fall. Investigated methods of funding a part-time director of faculty development other than from state funds. Analyzed the data collected to date on student evaluation of faculty survey instrument and recommended several adjustments in items. Conducted a survey of all faculty of their perceived needs in teaching effectiveness skills. Compiled a list of ECU faculty willing to share experiences in innovative teaching techniques. Planned and coordinated a series of faculty development programs March 14-25, with tweive ECU faculty presenting their experiences in using different teaching techniques. Senate resolutions No Senate resolutions originated with the committee this academic year. Unfinished business 1. Establishment of a faculty development office with a director identified by title. 2. Revision of student evaluation of faculty survey instrument if needed. Adapting the survey to include all courses, i.e., team taught, etc. 4, Expanding teaching awards. Evaluation of committee Structure: worked well. The committee always needs members who are proficient in statistics and surveying to help with the student evaluation of faculty process. Duties: just getting defined by the group since this is the first year teaching grants have: not been a committee function. Functions: should function more in areas of faculty development in addition to teaching techniques, etc. and probably will now that grants do not take all the committee's time. Personnel: interested in the purpose of the committee as defined in its charge. Attendance and full committee participation in committee discussion and work were excellent. Suggestions for improving effectiveness: Appointment of student members should be made during spring semester for the next fall so that students can attend from the first meeting. When student participation begins in December and later, they cannot participate in any meaningful way.
