Committee organization, subcommittees, activities: The Faculty Computer Committee functions as a body to make recommenda- tions concerning academic computing to (1) the Faculty Senate, (2) Computing and Information Systems, and (3) the Information Systems Advisory Committee. On October 11, 1982, the Chair formed the Computer Resource Control Subcommittee to investigate the means and policies for allocating scarce central computer resources. Committee accomplishments and recommendations outside the Faculty XI. Senate: The Computer Resource Control Subcommmittee worked with CIS to begin the software development and implementation necessary to provide accounting data for B6800 computer use so that the committee can intelligently discuss the allocation of resources. The question of approved grants allocating sufficient funds to compensate CIS for support services was raised. A recommendation to Grants and Projects was made to provide CIS a list of those grants containing funds for computer support which CIS could use when assigning account codes. Senate resolutions originating with the committee: None Business to be carried over to next year: Assuming the change budget contains money for academic computing, the committee will be involved in decisions of how to use this money. Continuing work on computer resource control must be done. Ideas such as requiring students to acquire computers will be explored. Committee evaluation: A. Structure - the structure of the committee is adequate and functional. B. Duties - duties are not always certain in the light of two other computer committees within the School of Medicine which seem to overlap to some extent. C. Functions - the committee is frequently asked to undertake planning activity which is better suited to an administrative unit. The expansion in CIS personnel for academic computing may alleviate some of this problem. D. Personnel ~ With two resignations at the end of the academic year, the committee is left with only three current members who regularly attend meetings. New members should be willing to serve in a meaningful way. There are gaps in the committee members' familiarity in the computer needs of various parts of the University. The lack of a representation of the largest user of University central computer resources, Mathematics, for the next year is seen as a great deficiency. Suggestions for improving commitee effectiveness: None
