MINUTES

September 14, 1981

The University Curriculum Committee met on September 14, 1981, in
Brewster B-103, at 3:00 p.m. Members present: Grossnickle, Boyce, Broad-
hurst, Cain, S.. Daugherty, Leahy, Moore, O'Rear, Topper. Member absent:
Hancock, Holt and ex officio:. Brewer, Johnson.

The minutes of April 2, 1981, and August 24, 1981, and September 3, 1981,
were approved as previously distributed.

Chairman Grossnickle announced that the last meeting of the Committee
prior to meeting the. University Catalogue deadline would be November 23,.1981,. .

‘He also reminded the academic units to send a copy of all proposals to

Ms. Myra Cain, representative from the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs’

- Professor Alfred Wang, Chairman of the Chinese Studies Committee,

_ presented ASAS 2000/CHIN 2000 Chinese Language I which will be. double listed.
in the University Catalogue on page 160 and page 92. He also presented — 5

ASAS 2003, Introduction to Chinese Culture. Professor Wang read a.letter™
from the University Librarian who stated additional library materials were.
mot necessary to support the courses. Professor Boyce moved to accept” —
both courses, the motion was seconded by Moore, and the motion passed.

' Professor Chestang, Chairman, Department of Geography and Planning,

_ ‘presented the new course proposal, GEOG 5050, 5051, Maritime Charts and

Navigation, The course will be double listed in the University Catalogue

“with COAS. (p.. 99)... ‘The course, initiated by the Geography Department,

will be taught by Geography umless other arrangements are made by. Geography.
_Accompanying the -proposal were letters of support from Professor W. Queen,. ..
Institute for Coastal. and.Marine Resources, Professor Ragan, History and
‘Professor Martinez, HPERS Department. Professor Chestang stated the required :
library materials for the course would be purchased from the present library _
budget for the Department.

The Committee suggested a title change, inserting the word Maritime
Charts and Navigation. Professor Chestang requested the approval for a

Professor Moore moved to accept the two proposals as amended, Broadhurst __
Seconded, and the motion passed.

The Committee discussed the revised charge of the University Curriculum”

Techniques

GEOG 5050, 5051 Maritime Charts and Navigation (3) (F, §)

Two (2) hours of lecture and three (3) hours of laboratory
per week

Prerequisites: None '

‘Maritime transport requires knowledge of nautical charts
as well as the art and science of navigation. This course
acquaints the student with nautical charts and their use
in the principles and practices in piloting and navigation.
